PIK Posted April 23, 2011 Report Posted April 23, 2011 Took my parents (82-85 yrs) with walkers and oxygen bottle to vote, we get there and there is a couple hundred in the line up, uptairs then down stairs and around the corner. So I asked what is going on. One ballot box, election canada sent out one box to advance polls around here saying nobody will be showing up, because it is easter friday, it almost killed my father, but thankfully a worker took my parents to the front of the line and nobody was upset about it. Topaz Posted April 23, 2011 Report Posted April 23, 2011 Good guess is the Election Canada didn't realize how important THIS election is the voters. I'm voting on Monday when everyone goes back to work and hopefully the waiting time won't be too long. I'm getting people to vote who didn't before, so this election results will probably very close. Molly Posted April 23, 2011 Report Posted April 23, 2011 In working advance polls, I've never seen a lineup bigger than perhaps two dozen people, so it's easy to understand why they wouldn't expect a rush. As as rule, fewer folks vote at advance polls than at a normal poll on polling day, and they have three days to do it, so having more than half a dozen people in the room is fairly rare. You can go hours without seeing a soul. Quote "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!" — L. Moonbox Posted April 23, 2011 Report Posted April 23, 2011 I went to the advance polls around 7pm Good Friday. I walked right in and was the only person there voting. Seems like you went at a bad time. For the record....... I didn't vote NDP Quote "A man is no more entitled to an opinion for which he cannot account than he is for a pint of beer for which he cannot pay" - Anonymous
Tilter Posted April 23, 2011 Report Posted April 23, 2011 Went about 2 PM today & had to wait 10 seconds--- what a screwup. Quit bitching--- you didn't have to fight your way to the poll with an AK47 & I'll bet there were no thugs waiting to beat you up if you voted for the wrong guy Quote

Next time tell your parents can call up elections Canada and they will send workers to their house to give them a ballot and let them vote in the comfort of their own kitchen. BTW I voted NDP already it was wonderful. Edited April 23, 2011 by punked Quote

scribblet Posted April 24, 2011 Report Posted April 24, 2011 (edited) I understand that Elections Canada ordered changes to the system of processing voters this year but with no "time trials" on the times required to process each voter. Not sure if it's new this time or not, but I thought one could vote at any advanced poll in their riding, but not so, you can only vote at your designated advanced poll. We found out the hard way as we were in town for some time and new we couldn't make it back in time to vote near home, so went in to another one, we couldn't vote without a transfer from the R.O. Hubby got dropped off the voters list too but we haven't moved, he went into the R.O. and got one a few days ago. No idea how it happens, neither do they LOL Edited April 24, 2011 by scribblet Quote Hey Ho - Ontario Liberals Have to Go - Fight Wynne - save our province

Mr.Canada Posted April 24, 2011 Report Posted April 24, 2011 We voted today as well. Does anyone know how they secure the ballots so they aren't tampered with before the election date? Bryan Posted April 24, 2011 Report Posted April 24, 2011 Does anyone know how they secure the ballots so they aren't tampered with before the election date? I actually asked an Elections Canada DRO this last year, and she didn't know. The boxes go in the back of a truck, the truck drives off, and....? Quote
WWWTT Posted April 24, 2011 Report Posted April 24, 2011 No problems here voting today. The nice weather must have kept some people away. punked Posted April 24, 2011 Report Posted April 24, 2011 Hopefully Kyle Seaback can win it this time. Last time he only lost by some 200 votes. I can't believe Tony Clement ran there 7 years back. Brampton West attracts some good candidates. Not saying I am a Tony Clement fan or anything just pointing out. Quote
Molly Posted April 25, 2011 Report Posted April 25, 2011 We voted today as well. Does anyone know how they secure the ballots so they aren't tampered with before the election date? I thought I had already answered that in another thread. (You could look it up, too.) At the end of each voting day, the ballots and all of the paraphanalia are sealed into the ballot box, which is then either returned to the RO, or safeguarded by the DRO. DRO and clerk both mark the seals so that they can clearly identify them; candidates agents are also welcome to mark them, and should there be some staffing catastrophe, an elector can be pressed into service to witness the seals, too. In any case, they are certainly verified by at leasttwo people (often several more). A ballot box should beformally sealed any time it is left under the supervision of a single person, even a trip to the washroom by one of the poll officers. Handsome Rob Posted April 26, 2011 Report Posted April 26, 2011 10 seconds. 1 Person in front. 4 Ballot boxes open. Interesting, Tory's the only ones with Scrutineers. Quote
Molly Posted April 26, 2011 Report Posted April 26, 2011 10 seconds. 1 Person in front. 4 Ballot boxes open. Interesting, Tory's the only ones with Scrutineers. Scrutineers for advance polls is a pretty low priority. Usually there are very few votes cast, the polls are in the hands of experienced officers (so the chance of anything screwy happening is much reduced) and as a rule, you have no particular need to track who has voted. Bryan Posted April 26, 2011 Report Posted April 26, 2011 (edited) After seeing what I did today, I think Scrutineers are definitely needed at the advance polls. There a gentleman there to vote, but he didn't even know his name. I'm very serious. Then he showed his ID, they filled out the sheet and were getting him to sign it, when he asked who's name that was he was signing for. When they told him the name, he didn't know who that was, and didn't understand that it was him. Then he started asking who he should vote for, and the EC person at the table started advising him of the party's platforms! Then when he was at the voting "booth", he complained that he couldn't read the ballot, and asked the same EC official to come and do it for him. And she did. As for the lineups, I saw none. Me and the guy I mentioned above. Edited April 26, 2011 by Bryan Quote
Tilter Posted April 26, 2011 Report Posted April 26, 2011 After he has voted the 4th or 5th time he'll get the hang of it His only problem will again be-- who he's supposed to be this time Quote
