Or from the so-called "Birthers" in the US. Though, at least there is some reason behind their lunacy, given that there is an actual constitutional requirement that the president be US-born. It's impossible to fathom why August thinks it's so necessary that the wife of the prime minister meet the requirements of the Citizenship Act.

There's a sort of nasty insinuation about the whole thing, like some sort of Madame Spider that has a potential PM in her clutches. The whole thing reeks of impropriety and bad taste, and of more than a little desperation, as if the whole "Iggy isn't a real Canadian" can be followed to the point of questioning his loyalty because of his wife's citizenship.

This thread shows up on the front page as "Ignatieff's Wife is Not", and I keep glancing over it and reading it as "Ignatieff's Wife is Hot" and giggling.

As far as the actual topic, I consider it a non-issue.

I'm still waiting for the answer to my question: what governmental role does the spouse of the prime mininster have, August?
Bambino, I sometimes think that you have a French view of a constitution. Are you asking me to cite what section of the Civil Code specifically refers to the status of the wife of a PM-aspirant?

As you would say, the British constitution is based on "convention". Well, welcome to a new 21st century convention.

This is democratic politics in the 21st century. The citizenship status of Ignatieff's wife matters to some voters.

True story: When I put the OP's title, I thought of Bev Oda.

[Whatever happened to Oda? I never hear much of her now.]

I don't care what you cite; I wanted to know what this governmental role is you claim the spouse of the prime minister has. You obviously can't.

No, it's more like "Welcome to August1991's attempt to create a convention out of thin air.

You're just making things up, August, and your unwillingness to admit is indicating some pretty severe desperation on your part. If what you were trying to insinuate weren't so vile and repugnant, I might even feel sorry for you, clawing at anything at all. But I can't, because what you're insinuating is ugly and pathetic.

There's no constitutional role for a PM's spouse. Never has been, and unlikely there ever will be. Look at Harper's wife, doing what PM's spouses have been doing since the 19th century, smiling and supporting their husbands.

I'm sorry, gambino. I can't cite the specific constitutional code.

"Convention out of thin air"? God knows how conventions start.

TB, if Ignatieff never becomes PM of Canada (and given Dion's citizenship record), what conclusion do you think future PM-aspirants will draw?

-----

In this 21st century, most Canadians, English or French, want to know their Prime Minister. If Harper's wife were from Trois-Rivieres or Victoriaville, and she were smart, Harper would now be a PM in a comfortable majority.

Because it doesn't exist.

I'm sure they don't start with some guy on an Internet forum endlessly repeating an unsubstantiated claim.

That he was an uninspired and uninspiring leader. I doubt his wife's citizenship will get much more than a passing nod. It's a footnote fact, at best.

You keep saying things like this, but you can offer no substantiation. You're just making things up. Perhaps you feel it makes you feel clever, like you've encountered this new analysis. What it really makes you look like is silly, snobbish and more than a little mean.

I don't like Iggy, I mostly don't like Liberal policies. But damn, the fact that his wife isn't Canadian is so not important.

The government can't give anything to anyone without having first taken it from someone else.

TB, because of Trudeau, Stephen Harper baragouine en français.

All things considered, I think that`s a good convention.

Absolutely! It's not important, it's not unusual.

It's just funny. Just a perception, which means a lot in politics. That damn Harper's attack ad was correct! Ignatieff is just visiting!

Well, yes. I agree. But his wife isn't in the equation. I especially love the quotes where he calls himseld an American. Great stuff.

I like this angle...

I never asked for code in particular; just an answer. But, again, you only confirm that you made up this governmental role the prime minister's wife has.

I made it up?

It's a convention now, bambino. The PM's wife matters. We're in the 21st century.

God knows what the conventions of the 22nd century will be. Thankfully perhaps, you and I will be dead by then.

The utter absence of evidence that supports your claim would tend to indicate that you did, yes.
But that's how conventions start.

----

In this fast-paced, tweeted world, Ignatieff's wife is still not a Canadian - some six years later.

Why?

A ) Ignatieff and his wife don't care.

B ) Government bureaucrats don't care.

Whether A or B, how sad our resignation of basic beliefs to Government.

Nobody seems to care. So, good luck with your convention.

8 pages later and it seems that other than a couple of exceptions, posters of all political stripes seem to think this is a non-issue. The OP certainly put up a fight, but there was no concrete evidence for anything as TB and GB pointed out. Of course, we also had a few emotionally-filled rants, but again, they bring nothing to the table, unfortunately.

And my personal favourite part of the thread, hands down, was this:

August:

"Convention out of thin air"? God knows how conventions start.

You forgot (C )...

Nobody cares!!

Now again August...

Seeing as we are talking about goofy things...

Why is it that you think Mr.Mulroney had the right idea vis a vis the Meech Lake and Charlottetown Accords and he was "correcting" the error of Mr. Trudeau??

Why don't you explain your opinion on that for everyone here??

I mean, that has far more relevancy than this little non-problem of yours...

No, this is MORE relevant:

Did you know at both that at both Meech Lake and Charlottetown they served goulash? Hungarian goulash!

Now, tell me why they did that??

I think it was convention. Or convention food. Or had been convention.

But the complete (non-)irony of them serving Hungarian goulash at those two events, when we know that Ignatieff's wife is *gasp* Hungarian-born...

And what's with that name "Ignatieff?" Sounds Eastern Bloc to me... be afraid...

Well, I will tell you. I bet she serves a mean goulash. Hungarian style...

An extra ten points for revealing how Mila and Margaret were the actual helmsmen helmswomen behind the constitutional talks and their husbands were employed as mouthpieces to placate a misogynist society.

What??

Hungarian Goulash!!!!

That's almost Communist!!!

I wonder if we should check Michael Ignatieff's birth certificate and see if he was born here??

Our political system might be held hostage by an illegal immigrant!!!
