Bryan Posted April 1, 2011 Report Posted April 1, 2011 He always answers question, at every stop. He's very forthcoming with the answers too. He just limits them to five. The journalists know this coming in, and they have plenty of time to get together to make those questions count. It's a smart way to keep journalists on task. They often spend the whole election asking the same questions over and over again. This makes them decide if it's really worth wasting a question on that one again if there's something else they actually want to know. Keeps the pressers short so that he can get on to the next stop too. Quote

ToadBrother Posted April 1, 2011 Report Posted April 1, 2011 Obama didn't take questions at all My point exactly. Obama's strategy was very deliberate, and while he may turn out to be a lukewarm president, by all accounts he was a champion campaigner and fundraiser, and part of that was tight control of the message. Let your opponents break themselves trying to crawl up your platform to swipe at you, don't give them any more ammunition than you can. Answering questions is essentially making yourself subservient to some other group (journalists, voters, opponents). Tell, don't answer. Quote

Scotty Posted April 1, 2011 Report Posted April 1, 2011 (edited) Liberals refuse to answer questions for 15 years now. Remember Trudeau's last campaign? The ghost campaign? They produced almost no platform, kept him away from the press as much as possible so they couldn't ask difficult questions, and yet he still won. I think it was against Clark, and my memory says he refused any debate too (could be wrong...) Edited April 1, 2011 by Scotty Quote It is an inverted moral calculus that tries to persuade the world to demonize one state that tries its civilized best to abide in a difficult time and place, and rides merrily by the examples and practices of dozens of states and leaderships that drop into brutality every day without a twinge of regret or a whisper of condemnation. - Rex Murphy
Sailor Posted April 2, 2011 Report Posted April 2, 2011 Harper has been kept such a tight lid on communication I'm curious if the guy's completely paranoid. He even went as far as muzzling scientist on the taxpayers' dime while global warming was a hot-button topic. As I said, it's a disciplined style of campaigning. If you can do it right, and not just seem standoffish and paranoid, it's a brilliant strategy. Let the other guys smash themselves on the walls while you just smile, kiss babies and drink a thousand cups of crappy Tim Horton's coffee. The less you let yourself be baited by reporters, the less likely you're going to say stupid things that will come back to bite you. Quote

It's not like there is'nt a history with these guys that suggests if they go off the script for a millisecond, things go to Hell fairly quickly... I'm wondering how long they can keep a lid on things until the press simply turns on them,or something silly derails Mr. Harper? Quote The beatings will continue until morale improves!!!

Sailor Posted April 2, 2011 Report Posted April 2, 2011 The "one-on-one" debate with Ignatieff was a pretty good example of what happens when Harper's unscripted. Yeah! I'll take that guy on!! eyeball Posted April 3, 2011 Report Posted April 3, 2011 I think a lot of people have bought into the idea that Timmy's is some sort of Canadian institution. There's definitely also something ideological going on though. I've been called a communist for casting aspersions on Timmy's coffee, although my stock does seem to go up a bit when I accept the odd doughnut hole. I do have to say they came out with a good coffee-mug a few years ago, it had to be blowing 25 to 30 knots in 3 meter seas before it even threatened to tip over.
