cybercoma Posted September 9, 2015 Report Posted September 9, 2015 (edited) I'm not ok with a prime minister who votes in support of legislation that he thinks may be unconstitutional. Trudeau voting for C-51 is even more offensive to me than Harper doing it (despite none of the other leaders actually being there for the vote). Edited September 9, 2015 by cybercoma Quote

JT says the legislation needs to be changed and oversight added but that message is easily lost. With the legislation as is, he should have opposed it. Mighty AC Posted September 9, 2015 Report Posted September 9, 2015 (edited) It's time for unions and activist groups to really push the ABC (Anyone But Conservative) message to avoid vote splitting within our dysfunctional electoral system. The 70% or so that will currently support something other than the Harper party should chose the strongest ABC option in their riding. In my newly altered riding, that candidate (currently) is from the NDP. Trudeau voting for C-51 is even more offensive to me than Harper doing it (despite none of the other leaders actually being there for the vote). you can claim it was a weasel move; however, again, the stated rationale was to accept the positive facets within the bill and work to repeal/adjust those of concern... repeal, of course, presuming on forming government. The other side of that. not formally spoken of, is to avoid giving Harper Conservatives an easy avenue for a "soft on domestic terror" attack-ad. Quote

So he gave up the good of the country and gambled it all on him winning the election. And the soft-on terror excuse is lame. Most Canadians disapproved of c-51 - he would have come out as a defender of our constitutional rights, not soft on terror. waldo Posted September 9, 2015 Report Posted September 9, 2015 And this justifies a yes vote from Trudeau because....? as stated, because it was important to get the positive/needed pieces in place. But again, you can presume to stand on "some principle"... that's moot regardless... since clearly Harper was determined to have the bill expedited. Quote

Trudeau voting for C-51 is even more offensive to me than Harper doing it (despite none of the other leaders actually being there for the vote). That's a fair point. Hopefully, Prime Minister Trudeau will have some better advisers than Liberal Leader Trudeau. Still. Anybody but Harper. Trudeau may have cynically supported C-51 because he thought it would hurt him to be seen as soft on terror; but I don't see him tabling a bill like C-51. waldo Posted September 9, 2015 Report Posted September 9, 2015 Which were...? per a macleans interview: Trudeau listed three ways the law will, in his view, improve the safety of Canadians: by making “preventive arrest” easier when police suspect someone may be planning to carry out a terrorist activity; by strengthening Canada’s “no-fly list”; and by improving communication and coordination on potential threats among federal agencies.
