August1991 Posted December 8, 2010 Report Posted December 8, 2010 IMV, Harper should replace the Face of the Queen on our $20 bill with Jeanne Mance or Marguerite Bourgeois. Harper has the authority to make this change, and Queen Elizabeth's crowned silhouette (or Charles') would still be on the coins. So, we would still have a connection to the monarchy. ---- Excepting the $20 bill, all of the faces on our paper money are men. And all of them are PMs since Confederation. Yet, Canada's history did not start in 1867. It is time for us to recognize our history prior to Confederation in 1867, and to recognize the contribution of women to this history. A $20 bill with the portrait of Jeanne Mance or Marguerite Bourgeois would do this. Harper wanted to change the words of our national anthem. Instead, he should give serious thought to this symbolic change of our money. Diefenbaker and Trudeau both made changes in Canadian federal money/cheques. Now, it is Harper's turn. Quote
M.Dancer Posted December 8, 2010 Report Posted December 8, 2010 IMV, Harper should replace the Face of the Queen on our $20 bill with Jeanne Mance or Marguerite Bourgeois. I don't know...we don't have any pre-confederation men either...and personages instrumental to Imperial France's conquest of New France... How about Madeleine "Yvette" Ryan... She played a huge role in keeping Canada together and quite frankly, would be funnier... Quote RIGHT of SOME, LEFT of OTHERS If it is a choice between them and us, I choose us
Argus Posted December 8, 2010 Report Posted December 8, 2010 IMV, Harper should replace the Face of the Queen on our $20 bill with Jeanne Mance or Marguerite Bourgeois. Who? Almost no one in Canada has even heard of those two. I find nothing wrong with the Queen's face on our money. It's really beyond me why ideologues get themselves worked up over stuff like that. I know it irks you separatist types that you continue to be associated with the English, who conquered you, but your only option is to leave - which i heartily encourage you to do - and pay your own bills from now on. Then you can put whatever Frenchmen you want on your Zimbabwe type currency Quote "A liberal is someone who claims to be open to all points of view — and then is surprised and offended to find there are other points of view.” William F Buckley
M.Dancer Posted December 8, 2010 Report Posted December 8, 2010 Who? Almost no one in Canada has even heard of those two. I wouldn't go that far. I learned about them in grade school, back when they taught Canadian history. Not long ago, my brothers were in town and I have this old firkin and I held it over my head (it was empty) and with a look of deparation and grimace, I said, "who am I"? Both answered at the same time... guyser Posted December 8, 2010 Report Posted December 8, 2010 Put Trudeau on it instead ! Now THAT makes sense. (wont be any $20's in Alberta I bet?) Quote
Smallc Posted December 8, 2010 Report Posted December 8, 2010 I would certainly support putting a PMs face on the $20 bill. That way, there would be continuity with PMs on the bill and the Queen on the coins. Quote
Oleg Bach Posted December 8, 2010 Report Posted December 8, 2010 Our money reflects the picture of the Queen which inturn reflects those that control our economy - who still like to answer to the House of Windsor Incorporated..The picture of the Queen is on our cash because it is HER money..that we play with..people fail to realize that London is still the control centre. g_bambino Posted December 8, 2010 Report Posted December 8, 2010 (edited) Harper wanted to change the words of our national anthem. Instead, he should give serious thought to this symbolic change of our money. Harper is the last person you should look to for support in a venture to get Canada's monarch of her money; he's a solid monarchist. Your chance was eight or ten years ago, when John Manley and Peter Donolo still had any influence. Personally, I've no problem with showing historical figures on our bills. But, I don't believe they should have replaced, or should replace in future, emblems of the reigning sovereign, whether an effigy, cypher, or arms. Ultimately, the king or queen is the personification of the state and, as such, coins and bills are issued under the authority vested him or her by the constitution. No reason why that reality should be secreted away just because its distasteful to some misguided republicans. [c/e] Edited December 8, 2010 by g_bambino Quote
g_bambino Posted December 8, 2010 Report Posted December 8, 2010 (edited) people fail to realize that London is still the control centre. I think that a failure to realise that would be a success, given that the opposite is true. The Queen's place on our money is as much an indication that London calls shots in Canada as the Queen's face on British money is an indication that Ottawa influences the UK. Argus Posted December 8, 2010 Report Posted December 8, 2010 Put Trudeau on it instead ! Now THAT makes sense. Too many people hate Trudeau's guts and regard him as primarily responsible for all Canada's ills - and there's a good case to be made for it. TimG Posted December 9, 2010 Report Posted December 9, 2010 Theres just no good reason to change our money, and it would just COST a bunch of money to do it.Paper bills redesigned every 10 years or so to incorporate the latest anti counterfeit technology. The mint actually makes money changing coin designs (people hoard commemorative coins which is money in the pocket for the mint). In short, there is no additional cost to changing the design of our money when the monarch changes. Quote
