Just to set the record straight, this all started when North Korea invaded the South in 1950. The aggressor has always been the North.

And later used as a proxy by Maoist China to expand Sino Communism...

We no longer have to worry about the Communist threat...What we have to worry about is a lunatic regime who has some sort of nuclear threat...And seems to have very little compunction about using military force to extort things for the regimes gain..

Oh I dont know... Hes not without value.

Picture you and I were talking about this over a beer down at the local watering hole... and a crazy retard sporting colorful clown pants and a hockey helmet runs past our table shrieking "GRETZY!!! GRETZKY!!!", while repeatedly smashing his palm into his own forehead. I guess some people might get mad, but I that kind of thing cracks me right up!.

I guess he cracks me up,as well....

In a "Village Idiot" sort of way...

Go ahead Professor...Continue your idiocy at your expense...

Nobody has answered this question yet.

If SK is past the point of diplomacy then its time to prepare for war... And North Korea has already given the pretense they need...

What is the wisdom of going ahead with this idiotic wargame and risking having the war start with a North Korea first strike that might kill hundreds of thousands of Koreans. Wouldnt it make more sense for SK to be the ones that struck first with a blitz of NK artillery positions so that you minimize South Korean casualties and damage to SK assets?

The ingenious plan cooked up so far seems to be...

"Lets do live fire drills in a senstive area, and then see if NK followed through on their insane threat to kill hundreds of thousands of South Korean civilians!".

Thats not a strategy... thats a eulogy.

The idea for South Korea is to ensure that they are not the aggressor. North Korea is the one doing all of the provocation and attack.

They are already at war...they have been prepared for over 50 years.

Interestingly,I just watched the 11 o'clock news on CTV (ya' know...That bastion of lib/left thought??? :rolleyes::lol: )

The ropert basically said that these war games have become, just as I expected,a symbolic show of nationalism for the South Koreans AND a show of unity between South Korea and the US military...

And I assume that brass in both militaries have decided that if a few sailors take the deep-6,it's a small price to pay to decimate the wacko's in Pyongyang...It'll certainly galvanize public opinion in favour of a massive response...

At the cost of how many hundreds of thousands of lives? Theyve already ensured they arent the aggressor.... NK sunk one of their ships and shelled one of their islands

If they have reached the point where theyre just "not gonna take it anymore", then they should use whatever tactical and strategic advantages they have at their disposal. And the way this goes best for South Korea is if they blitz NK Artillery positions and manage to wipe them out before theyre able to level northern SK. Since NK is behind on technology you they might be able to move people into shelters and move assets out of range for a few days without NK knowing about it.

They should either do that... or do nothing. Their current course of action is assinine... I imagine thats why theyve fired top military officials, and you gotta wonder about the competency of civilian leadership as well.

This is like the keystone cops... NK sunk a ship... the SK/US answer? Lets have a military drill to "show em we mean business". NK responds by shelling a South Korean Island. SK and US response again? Keep poking at the hornets nest with a stick... more war games

They should either go BIG and get it on... or stop running live fire drills right outside a countries territorial waters, which lets face it... would piss off ANY country.

Theres already demonstrations on the streets of SK calling for action. They dont have to galvanize anything at this point.

I think this whole chain of events has been a botched miscalculation on the park of the SK military. Thats probably why they fired the secretary of defense, and they bloody well SHOULD have.

Hmmm...I don't think you know how this game of brinksmanship is played. The planned "wargames" are an opportunity to bolster readiness, strike planning, civil defense, US naval assets, etc. What's your hurry?

I'm going to assume you feel that the attack on the island last week was not a reason to go to war....

If that was an isolated incident,I would probably agree with you...

But it's not! It's another incident in an increasingly long line of increasingly violent incidents by North Korea, this time on innocent civilians.

You feel nothing should really be done...

Do you feel this will buy some long lasting peace in the region?

Sigh... thats not what Im saying. Im arguing this from the standpoint of someone thats accepted war is inevitable. If thats the case why piss around with military games that might provoke the north into a major first strike with an undepleted artillery battery.

Why not cancel the drill, and public say youre doing it to avoid provoking the north. Spend a day or two moving as many assets and people away from the blast radius as possible, then blitz NK artillery positions and try to wipe them out before they can kill hundreds of thousands of people?

I think you guys are defending (or at least refusing to condemn) a course of action thats just plain stupid. And I think South Korean leaders have made the same assessment I have, which is why they FIRED the moron that came up with it.

Just read the thread instead of asking people to restate their positions again. Iv been very clear on what I think the risk is with this course of action. And as I pointed out Im not the only one that sees a problem with it... the guy thats been in charge of the SK military during this debacle is now working at Hyundia.

You mean to tell me a corporate aparatchik and shill was in charge of the South Korean General Staff???

Because that risk is acceptable while preparing a coordinated response.

They can do this regardless of the drill's status, and are likely doing so.

Margaret Thatcher did not accept John Nott's resignation over the pedestrian response to an invasion of the Falklands.

That would be a promotion. There is no reason to take your armchair analysis or conclusions seriously in the face of over 50 years for this sort of thing. It is clear that you are mocking the situation as a simple dare, with zero skin in the game.

Hehe no I was exaggerating. They DID fire their minister of defense, but I made up the part about him working at Hyundai.

Naw...It's his/her usual refrain about you smug Canadian daring to discuss a potential military operation where his/her brave American servicemen/women are trying to save the world..

He/she,I assume, would prefer you just said thank you very much so we can live "vicariosly" through their inherent greatness due to their "Manifest Destiny"...:lol::lol:

It's great fun....like messing with Sasquatch. Next we'll have brave Canadians urging that the DPRK be attacked with "tactical nukes" and ROK "blitzkrieg" against artillery batteries...by somebody else...wait...we already had that.

You can'r make this kind of comedy up.

The North Koreans have learned well from uncle Adolf when it comes to brinkmanship. They will take everything that people like dre are willing to give them. The only question is when they will go too far because at some point they will.
