The Ontario government is scraping the eco-fees because Ontarians don't want them but now the question is how to keep items out of the landfills that shouldn't be there. I would think the companies that produce these items should have a recycle program their own. http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/13102010/71/central-ontario-gov-t-scraps-eco-fees.html

My God, is there an issue that Dalton won't flip on ?

If the polls continue to show that we don't want him as Premier, will he come out in favour of that TOO ?

Oh good, because that was a damn joke of a system.

I payed the eco-fees when I bought my new computer back in the spring. I bought everything myself, and put it together myself, but yet I was charged 20-30 bucks for that eco-fee. All the packaging was recyclable, and I had nothing in terms of equipment to recycle.

You bought a new monitor and payed an eco-fee. For what? How does paying a fee prevent the item from actually going in the garbage instead of being properly recycled?

Most companies do have a computer recycling program. We have contracted a couple places country wide for all our computer recycling. The recycling was never done when I got to this warehouse and for this position, so when I loaded up a truck, it ended up to be about 15 pallets of old computer equipment. All that went to a certified recycler. And the best part about it is that there is no charge to recycle. They also drove up from the GTA area to Ottawa, and still no charges. :D One computer or a truckload, they all take it without charging out. If they do charge you, I'd be wary of them.

Dalton was an idiot to plan an in-your-face tax on items that even showed up on my receipt: eco-tax fee: $2.85!! Yay me so happy!

If he was smart he would have slipped it through the back door somehow. Charge it to the businesses, who would have then passed it on to the consumer.

Most people would call that "listening to the people". Of course those who don't have any issues that can stain his clothing would just saying he is flipping. I get it. Conservatives don't like democratic principles.

Like the time he "listened to facebook". If he listens to the people so well, how did this get passed in the first place ? And ... Conservatives seem to be the ones he's listening to these days.

It one thing to listen its another to do the right thing.I'm still not trusting the PC because of Harris. Voters were so in a rush to get rid of Rae that we ended up with someone worse! Voters need to take some time to research the leaders and actual see what thy are offering and can they deliver. What' different of the Harris PC vs todays PC's?

I think the public needs to be better. It's like driving by hammering on the gas, or the brakes - and apply that metaphor to any party you like.

The fact is, if you look back 20 or 30 years you can see that the parties are actually close to each other in how they view the roles of government, business, tax levels and so on. None of the big parties is advocating for 2 tiered healthcare, government takeover of energy industries and so on.

I think we're discussing the brass tacks right now. But the debate tends to get nasty nonetheless.

PC alway get the bad rap, the left comes in and destroys the province and the right has to be the meany and clean it up, and then we do it all over again.

Eco-fees make no sense..insisting that someone pay for the right to produce garbage...creates a strain on the operator who must increase his out put of waste product to keep up with creating more product and more waste product - and so the vicious circle continues....Much like the two million plasic garbage cans created for the city of Toronto..The impact on the environment..through the creation of the plastic will never be fully balanced..because it will take 30 years to catch up with the polution generated though the manufacture of the stupid garbage can....Not sure what an eco-fee is but it sounds like having to work harder to make more money to pay a fee - more work means more pollution.

That assumes that the consumer isn't paying extra for the garbage. They will have to pay extra, and demand will be reduced - people will use less, reuse more, and the costs to clean up what IS produced will be covered.

Eco fees are gone, eco premiums are on the way.

See, I would have said the same thing about what McGuinty had to contend with in terms of the hidden deficit the PCs left him.

I don't think the eco-fees were a terrible idea, for the reason Michael gives, but I can see how it makes some sense to cancel them if people were that upset. Overall, I'd tend to agree with Hampton though that the producer should pay.

And just wait until who dat takes over and finds out that we are in debt alot more then is being let on.

There's a difference between speculating the worst about a government and actual evidence that an outgoing govt left a hidden deficit (which seems to undermine your characterization of how the 'left' and 'right' operate in this province). We know, for example, that the federal Liberals did not leave a deficit for the CPC. Besides, we also don't know for sure that McGuinty won't win next year.

Well, thank God for small mercies I say. However, don't for a moment think they've given up on the revenue -- they'll get it elsewhere. But at least the political backlash from a stealth tax innitiative left a mark. Why does it take bad poll results to be even minimally aware of the cheating and lying McGuinty's band of goons have been all about? In a functioning democracy, government leadership knows that people don't like taxes, and absolutely will not accept one foisted on them via underhanded methods.

Because the people seem to view the government as having two gears: hike taxes or slash taxes. And like the truant, government acts as they are expected to.
