He would have stood up and say this is a failed policy and I am not going to keep it going, this debate would be over and iggy would still have his liberal support, and some respect from the rest of us.

They should've made the registry a confidence vote then they could've put up or shut up.

So why would he do that when he supports having the registry?

Another option is for Harper to compromise and work on improvements to the registry so that it is effective. The debate would be over and he would have support from all parties instead of simply losing the vote and being forced to keep an expensive and ineffective program.

Is Harper also against the handgun registry? Where is the talk of eliminating this? How are the two registries different?

Well it's a private members bill so if I'm not very much mistaken I don't think it can be made a matter of confidence as it's not a bill direct from the government. ie. a confidence vote means you do or do not have confidence in the governments ability to govern, since this bill is not from the government it's not reflective of their general policy. Again I may be wrong on this count, anyone know if you can make a private members bill a confidence vote?

Iggy should be smart enough to know it is a flawed program and it is just political. Harper has no plan to get rid of the hand gun reg, which has been in use since the 30;s. And buying hand guns is a hell of alot harder, which I and most have no problem with. People are not walking around with concealed long guns in thieR pants.LOL

So you are saying that people who register their handguns are walking around with them concealed in their pants?

Law-abiding handgun owners are NOT walking around with handguns in their pants!! For you to suggest that they are is assinine!

How are law-abiding handgun owners any more dangerous than law-abiding rifle/shotgun owners? Criminals do not register handguns either.

Why is anyone opposed to one registry and not the other?

The fact that one registry is 70 years old has no bearing on whether it is an effective program or not. Why is registering hanguns effective and long-guns not?

The registries are exactly the same and are adhered to by exactly the same people.

It is very easy to conceal a hand gun compared to a long gun. And yes it is a big difference. You don't use hand guns to hunt in canada or do farmers use them to take care of varmist or whatever. A hand gun is not a tool as a long gun can be. And the fact people still get shot with hand guns and the guns are usally smuggled in to the country from the states. So really did it work ? Criminal do not registred thier guns , and I just can't for the life of me understand why it is so hard for people to figure that out. This board is divided on it, the country is divided on this ,the liberals divided the country by doing this.

Regardless of this fact, law abiding handgun owners are no more dangerous than long-gun owners.

Just like the long-gun registry, only law abiding citizens register their handguns. What is the difference in the ideology of the two registries? Why is registering hanguns effective and long-guns not? Why do you oppose one and not the other when they are, esentially, the same thing?

ANd don't tell me it is because handguns are small... that is a red herring.

Perhaps that possibility should be addressed by folks who might actually need/want/use a handgun.

Actually... has anyone actually said that a handgun registry is effective? Really, what is it intended to do?

You may have a good argument for the discontinuing of the hand gun registry but it is certainly not an argument for the continuing of the long gun registry.

ALL weapons that Canadians can own legally should register their weapons , just like they would do with anything else they own like their car or truck and several other things but do bitch about. What make long gun owners think they are "special" from the rest of us who follow the rules and may not like some of them but we do it? As I said before, anyone owning a gun, hand or long, CAN become a criminal under certain circumstances.

If you have a truck or car that has been sitting in your garage for a decade, does it need to be registered?

....thanks in advance

before you put that vehicle up on blocks for the past decade, when you did last drive it, did you properly register it? Certainly, if you complied with the law, obviously there's a record of your vehicle, advising you are the registered owner. Did you properly register it prior to putting your vehicle up on blocks this past decade?

....thanks in advance

I don't have a truck on blocks, but if I did, I would cancel the registration.

So are you implying there is a national vehicle registry?

of course... if you did, there would be a record of you as the last registered owner. Certainly, you could elaborate on why you felt it significant to speak to questioning the registration of a vehicle, one no longer being driven... is there a parallel you're attempting to draw with the gun registry?

Could you point me to this national vehicle registry?

The parallel btw was brought by Topaz.

clearly, you were trying to make some point concerning vehicle registration... I appreciate you have difficulty (an obvious avoidance) in elaborating on what point you were attempting to convey about vehicle registrations. You're the only one speaking of a national vehicle registry... oh wait... I get your point now! You're in favour of regional (provincial?) gun registries... you just don't like this whole 'national' thingee - hey, Dancer? That's your point, right?

The point is, and I realize that this may be hard for you, being the partisan that you are....there is no comparison with the firearms registry and vehicle registry, the point that Topaz was struggling to make and that you are flailing to find...

You do not need, for instance, once your car is on blocks, to re-register every 5 years. Nor if you want to sell your vehicle does the buyer need a drivers license to buy it.

Still struggling?
