I'm surprised there isn't a thread on this or did I miss among all the hyperpole somewhere ?

After reading and watching, I thought Glenn Beck had a very positive message and did his best to keep it non-political/non-partisan while on the on the other hand, Al Sharpton made fun of the Beck rally being quite negative toward it.

Beck, Palin and other speakers at the Restoring Honour Rally asked the crowd to help restore traditional American values and honour Martin Luther King's message (where MLK's niece, Alveda King, chose to speak)

I found portions of Sharpton's messages to be quite negative and possibly serving to increase the divide, while Beck was inclusive, Sharpton was not. Quite a troubling picture actually.

Also note that the CBC chose to underestimate the crowd by tens of thousands.

The CBC doesn't do it's own crowd estimating. That would be the DC police that do the official figures, which is what the CBC usually uses. Other news organizations may use other figures.

Not suprising. Unless of course it was the pride parade, or gay rights rally. Then they could've reported the crowd being millions!

Exactly LOL

It's too bad the left like to demonize and label people who have different points of view. I admit Beck can be a bit over the top sometimes, but this was a peaceful event where even the lib left media failed to find racism and yet, the left attacks it like rabid dogs.

check out the daily caller to see how many time 'predominately white' is mentions, yet no one mentions Sharpton and his 'predominantly black' rally.

Indeed. I would go so far as to say too bad, so sad.

How do they demonize and label them? By calling them intolerant and categorizing them all under one tent?

Gotta laugh when people whose main line of argument consists of demonizing anyone to the left of Genghis Khan howl "unfair" when people say that Glenn Beck is a bigoted hate-mongerer, which he and Al Sharpton happen to be in equal measures.

Gotta laugh too when Beck tell Americans they should honour Martin Luther King's vision by supporting the military. did the idot even bother to read what MLK said and wrote'

Conservatives and right wingers can't be all that bad. If they were, Ignatieff wouldn't constantly invite all of them to join him under the big Liberal tent. :P

I don't really care much about the rally. But it's pretty impressive that 300,000+ thousand people showed up.

Are you counting Ignatieff?

Ignatieff set up his tent as a wannabe American years ago....with or without Glenn Beck.

Hmmm...you sound suspiciously like a Canadian CPCer. A real American wouldn't even have a clue who Ignatieff is.

Nope....Ignatieff is a self admitted wannabe American:

From "Living Fearlessly in a Fearless World" Ignatieff Commencement Address to Whitman College (USA), 2004

"
There is only one thing we can do about this: live the way we are supposed to live, as our Constitution commands us to, with dignity and respect for all. Being an American is not easy.
It is hard. We are required to keep some serious promises. We are judged by a high standard, one we crafted for ourselves in the founding documents of the republic, the ones that talk about the equality of all people, the ones that tell us that government is of the people, by the people and for the people. We need to live by this, at home and abroad, and it is just about the only thing we can do to face the hatred of those who want to destroy us. Our best defense is to stay true to who we are. Our best defense is to refuse to live in fear, of them, of ourselves, of anyone."

"We are living a moment of truth in Iraq, a moment in which we have to look fair and square at disagreeable realities, in which we have to look at ourselves. The pictures from Abu Ghraib prison are a kind of mirror in which we have to look at ourselves and ask: what kind of people did this? How did this become possible? Could I have done a thing like this to those people?"

"We do need to ask ourselves, as a society, as a free people, how we came to this pass. Those soldiers were acting in the name of America, and they disgraced its name. We have to ask who authorized them to do so. Who should take responsibility here? We need answers to these questions, and we need to take responsibility as citizens that we get answers, and that accountability is established, right up the chain of command if need be, so that we do not go here again as a country."

"Some voices are calling on America to circle the wagons. Some are even saying that our enemies do worse, so we should respond in kind. The problem here is that this is America. This is a constitutional republic based on the rule of law and equal respect for all persons. We cant pretend that we can bend the rules any which way.

We made the rules for ourselves. We have to live by them."

Pretty much...I'm not certain supporting the military is in keeping with the passive resistance Dr.King championed...

I like how I've read in a few places where the crowd was told that no negative signs were allowed and they had to be told to be positive...

I wonder why that is?

As far as 300,000 on The Mall goes..Meh...

How many showed up to listen to Dr.King?

And,in keeping with the looney Glenn Beck, how many showed up to listen to Louis Farrakhan over a decade ago?

ya, ya... that Glenn Beck, 'I had a scheme' rally was quite the event! Send in the clowns... to "restore honour"!

The fact that the Founding Fathers expressly created a secular state seems to make a lie of a lot of what Beck was saying, but that hardly matters. What matters is that Beck got a lot of dumb rubes to follow him and that moron Palin.

Secular state? I think you're confusing them with the Soviet Union. Besides, was it Washington or Jefferson that attended church service in the Congressional Captiol building every Sunday!

I think it is far-fetched to talk about secularism to described what the Founding Fathers had in mind. That being said, they most likely didn't have the type of hate-mongering fear-mongering rambling of the likes of Glenn Beck in mind either.

You really don't know about the separation of church and state?

Not surprising really. Maybe once you finish Grade 12.
