I think its more because canada understands that they need immigrants to enrich the country... immigrants are only too happy to come here to help around, and yet we kick them in the teeth with our intolerance and racism... Without immigrants from what you all call "poor countries" we'd be in a world of shit. Quote

Ok... but a minor point about making transit accessible has now drifted the whole thread. The point is that local involvement is good for maintaining service levels. M.Dancer Posted August 17, 2010 Report Posted August 17, 2010 I distrust the Blogs which herald so called improvements....sort of like when Rogers raises the rates then offers to upgrade you to a combo pack and will be happy to give you 25% off... I am old enough to remember when transit workers wore uniforms, would make change, offer directions, stop between stops for the elderly, help mothers with kids and were polite and well mannered... Today a driver that is sober, a street car that is running only 5 minutes late and traffic chaos created by ill thought out street car ROWs is considered an improvement. This is why metrics and 3rd party audits are required. And, to be clear, the blogs didn't herald the improvements. They called for them, and TTC management - under the spotlight - was forced to prove that they were actually doing something. It's a TTC blog, so it's not like they're going to forget and let it die. Not to say that a blog supplants a general-information medium such as a newspaper, but it is there for devotees, as well as the casually interested when its needed. I am old enough to remember when transit workers wore uniforms, would make change, offer directions, stop between stops for the elderly, help mothers with kids and were polite and well mannered... Sorry, grampa, you can't turn back the clock. Today a driver that is sober, a street car that is running only 5 minutes late and traffic chaos created by ill thought out street car ROWs is considered an improvement. Your post sort of reminds me of that - you know, the kind of leap that Homer did: We shouldn't paint a few extra characters on TTC signage because, you know, it will turn Canada in to a hellhole. Or maybe we should ask those people which they would prefer: A ) the TTC spending a boatload of money on new signs that include every language known to man (because I'm fairly certain SOMEBODY in the city speaks each and every one). or B ) spends the money on improving transit so that they can get to their jobs, and make the money that feeds their families. Honestly, a city this size with only two real rapid transit lines? (one north south, one east west) and neither that touches the airport? Really? Yeah, much bigger priorities for the TTC. Black Dog Posted September 26, 2010 Report Posted September 26, 2010 I would prefer signage to be in two languages; Canadian and English. Still on that same tired old joke, eh? Sad. Quote
BubberMiley Posted September 26, 2010 Report Posted September 26, 2010 (edited) I would prefer signage to be in two languages; Canadian and English. I wouldn't bring up the lame joke either if you hadn't criticized others for not knowing how to punctuate. A semi-colon before a list? Really? Only in New Jersey, I guess. Edit: I updated my status bar to show you how such a sentence should be punctuated. Sorry for, once again, making you look really, really stupid. BubberMiley Posted September 27, 2010 Report Posted September 27, 2010 For a numbered list you'd be right. For separating different phrases wrong. Right. And a phrase has a subject and a verb. Lists are not phrases, and numbers have nothing to do with it. I hate grammar police, because they only ever use that tactic when they don't know what they're talking about. And usually they know even less about the grammar. Quote "I think it's fun watching the waldick get all excited/knickers in a knot over something." -scribblet

Are you saying University of Wisconsin doesn't know grammar (link)? See "(w)hen to Use a Semicolon" and "[r]ules for Using Semicolons" (first line for each). I think you have confirmed your lack of knowledge of either the Canadian or English language, if indeed not your stubborness and stupidity. I think you have confirmed your lack of knowledge of either the Canadian or English language, if indeed not your stubborness and stupidity. But your use of the semicolon was incorrect. Your own link verifies this, actually. You aim the reader at the first line for each (when to use and rules for using). In both cases--which you cite--it says to use a semicolon when linking two independent clauses. "Canadian and English" is not an independent clause. I'm saying the University of Wisconsin knows perfectly well how to use a semi-colon, and they confirmed everything I said. I'm amazed that after reading it you still think you were correct. I guess it's both stubbornness (with two n's) and stupidity. BTW (just to help you out), "independent clauses" means each clause could stand on its own as a sentence (i.e., they both have a subject and a verb). Look carefully at the example they cited in your link, and then make your joke about "Canadian versus English" again to try and save face. Black Dog Posted September 27, 2010 Report Posted September 27, 2010 While we're parsing grammar etc., how about this: Minorities in general cam here because they like what we have. We should not be striving to turn into the countries or hellholes they left. "Cam" is not a word. "We" are not countries. Quote
