Archie, Meet Kevin

Same "sex" (gender) unions are not the issue....the issue is marriage for each state. Archie Comics enjoys a large Christian demographic, which opposes any such marriages by a large majority.

So, you don't find it telling that a comic with a large christian following is comfortable selling a gay character? Ellen is likewise cute and equally benign, in a political sense. When she talks about her marriage, housewives across america clap.

The times, they are changing.

Not at all....I'm surprised it has taken Archie Comics this long. When do you think we will get Betty and Veronica discussing blowjobs and condoms?

Then I guess they'll stop reading. But a comic book which showed to extremely attractive buxom young women frequently in bikinis to complain because a low-key gay character is introduced is too rich. Archie Comics have spent a half a century titillating us with Betty and Veronica, but have a gay guy and suddenly the Moral Majority has a fit.

Well, maybe Archie Comics will lose the Christian base. Maybe they'll go out of business. But one thing's for sure, a comic strip like Archie has to remain topical to some degree, and has to change to fit the social norms of any given time, or simply cease being relevant. And it's not like the Archie comics haven't been modernizing. The last time I read one, about ten years ago, it struck me that there wasn't a lot left of the post-war Middle American setting of Riverdale.

The term same sex marriage is an oxymoron.

Hardly... and besides the meaning and context of words changes all the time. That's the nature of language. A word's definition is precisely what the speakers of the language the word belongs to says it is. It's called semantic change, and it's been happening as long as there were people to speak languages.

If you don't like it, I suggest you take up some other language that more conforms to your views.

It is in the process of changing. But per the conventional definition Shady is correct. Same sex unions would not be an oxymoronic term.

Maybe he made a mistake and wanted to say, "Same sex marriage is moronic."?

I'm sure that's what he was trying to say, but trying to be clever about it. Clearly he still worries enough about the social stigma of being a bigot to try to couch his arguments in ludicrous semantics.

Well, adding a gay character in itself is no big deal. And not being a Christian the rest "don't confront me none!" as the old bluesmen used to say.

However, if it means they start promoting show tunes or ABBA songs then I'll have to tell my kids that Archie Comics will be banned from the house!

I have to wonder if Kevin is simply going to be a gay guy whose only role in the comic series is to openly admit being gay. In other words, will he ever be in a relationship? Will he ever be attracted to a guy and talk about it the way the guys are always talking about their attractions? Or is saying that he's gay going to be the extent of it? It'll be interesting to see how it develops.

You probably nailed it... saying he's gay is probably about all that will ever happen. Having Veronica unsuccessfully throwing herself at him is probably the extent of the story possibilities. Maybe he and Betty can commiserate about unrequited love.

That's not much different from Chuck, though, is it? Aside from providing Archie a more inclusive group of friends, I can't recall Chuck ever doing much. 4th member of the Riverdale High football team, or something. Maybe Kevin can join the team too.

Actually, I think Chuck's father, Coach Clayton, had a more prominent role right from the start. Though it appears the fear of creating an offensive caricature forced the artists to draw him in a strangely lifelike manner compared to his more cartoonish faculty colleagues Kleats, Flootsnoot, Grundy and Weatherbee.
