Born Free Posted February 1, 2010 Report Posted February 1, 2010 true but this may be wore because back than The PM could say... What happened was Not government policy This PMO left a bad policy in place & told every one to shut up! Not sure I agree entirely because Chretien did shut the Inquiry down. I seem to recall that they had one of his deputy guys on the witness list but the inquiry was prevented from getting into examining the government guys and their possible role in the matter. In any event, General Hillier is responsible to see to it that his detainees were treated in accordance with the Geneva conventions - not to keep his eyes firmly shut and then declare that he did not see any torture. Anyone with half a brain would automatically assume that when handing prisoners over to the Afghans the likliehood of torture was very high. Hillier made no personal effort to make sure that torture didnt happen. Oh well....onward and upward. Remember, Harper is the guy, when opposition, declared that the Canadian Army needs to be sent to Iraq. - As PM he claimed that he only said that to scare Saddam. Quote

It was still possible to argue that the threat was not imminent and that the risks of combat were too great. What tipped me in favor of taking these risks was the belief that Hussein ran an especially odious regime and that war offered the only real chance of overthrowing him. This was a somewhat opportunistic case for war, since I knew that the administration did not see freeing Iraq from tyranny as anything but a secondary objective. http://www.novak.com/weblog/stories/2004/03/17/michaelIgnatieffOnIraq.html Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

What happened was Not government policy This PMO left a bad policy in place & told every one to shut up! have to wonder how the military guys will feel about this...Harper is having photo ops with the military every chance he gets trying to cash in the Capt Canada image...now his government is going to sell them out to try and save themselves instead of doing the honorable thing and letting McKay accept blame and fall on his sword... EyesWideOpen Posted February 1, 2010 Report Posted February 1, 2010 (edited) Does no one else find it weird that this too comes down in March? Proroguing Parliament is a sure fire way to make sure no questions are asked until the report is tabled. Edited February 1, 2010 by EyesWideOpen Quote
Born Free Posted February 1, 2010 Report Posted February 1, 2010 (edited) The ability to remember what did not happen is truly a remarkable skill. I gather you missed what Harpers multiple positions were re Iraq. In 2003 Harpers position was... "in reading only the polls, indulging a juvenile and insecure anti-Americanism, this government has for the first time in our history left us outside our British and American allies in their time of need." "In the final analysis," he added, "disarming Iraq is necessary for the long-term security of the world, to the collective interest of our historic allies and, therefore, manifestly it is in the national interest of this country." In June 2004, in the run-up to the election that year. Harper told reporters that he was only advocating morally supporting Bush and Tony Blair. Later in June, as the campaign began, he said he hadn't wanted to send Canadian troops to Iraq for the invasion, he was thinking of a pre-deployment before the war to scare Saddam. Born Free Posted February 1, 2010 Report Posted February 1, 2010 ...and Mr. Ignatieff, leader of the opposition and American transplant, agreed: Well we all know now that the invasion was based on a pack of lies. Chretien & de boys had an inkling about it. He apparently asked George if the proof was good and if he would swear to it. Bush replied.."I cross my legs and hope to fly its true." Chretien soon found out the proof Bush offered was pure bullshit but eventually was able to forgive him when he said..."Don worry aboud it...its water under de fridge now." Quote

Later in June, as the campaign began, he said he hadn't wanted to send Canadian troops to Iraq for the invasion, he was thinking of a pre-deployment before the war to scare Saddam. This moral support has come at a cost that will be far harder to pay down than any military budget ever could be. That said, it was the most valuable support our so-called 'allies' could have received from us. Quote A government without public oversight is like a nuclear plant without lead shielding.
Oleg Bach Posted February 1, 2010 Report Posted February 1, 2010 Look at Mckay - what do you expect as far as supervision of the military - This guy can not even supervise his own personal life and has horrible judgement as far as character - getting into the sack with Belinda Stronach should have been a sign that the man is an utter fool and materialist with no real intellect of spirit. Why would a man in his right mind bed a woman that is a spoiled elitist with a grade 9 education and a father who fires workers who find defects in the metal of prime auto parts? Quote
