Well, you were right about Dose.ca, Morris.

Maybe you're right about this, I'm not sure. In any case, if I have any questions about the Dose, I'll know that you're the expert. ;)

On THIS THREAD jdobbin says the internet will be the hula hoop.

Do you think so ?

Are there still people who think that the web is just a fad ?

Answer truthfully - the Twitter bird is watching !

No, but I do think its utility has been way overblown and squelching its potential for enabling things like expanded participatory democracy will probably keep it more in the domain of entertainment then anything else.

I said now watch what you say they'll be calling you a radical,

A silly question. Was the Telephone a fad? Radio? Television? The Internet is simply a communication medium and it is here to stay. But you can bet that in 50 years ihe Internet content we take for granted today will be as quaint as a 50s TV show is today.

Eyeball,

They thought television was a bad. I remember hearing somebody say "you can't do chores while watching TV !".

Modern Democracy has never worked with any technology as well as print technology, which was cutting edge in the 19th century when it was born. Even the telegraph had a negative impact on democracy. Radio made Hitler a star. And Nixon beat Kennedy in the debate.

By mid 21st century, we may actually figure out ways to make democracy work with current technology. New web technologies now adopt usability studies early in their inception. If those practices could be adapted to study and project long-term effects of new media on society, then we would have solved a major human problem.

One thing we constantly do is assume that because democracy allows participation by all, we need to do everything in our power to force participation by all - including internet voting and especially ridiculous mandatory voting laws enacted in some parts.

A very astute comment, but only 50 years ago new media were suspected of being fads as I said above.

IMV, twitter is a fad. The Internet is not.

----

Radio and television offer ways for one person to send information to many other people.

Telephones offer primarily a way for one person to communicate with another person. (Conference calls were always messy.)

The Internet offers a way to do both. With the Internet, one person can send information to many or send it to one person. The Internet also dramatically reduces the cost of sending information.

IMV, the Internet is no hula hoop. It is an innovation as important as the invention of writing, printing, telephones, radio or television. (None of these match, IMHO, the invention of numbers.)

A fad is a practice or interest followed for a time with exaggerated zeal. Twitter appears to be a craze which has a shorter lifespan.

The Internet started as a fad but is probably becoming more of a tool over time but like television, it may become a less regarded in terms of zeal.

Tools can be retired though. You have said so yourself.

Mo,

You said "They nearly broke their hip trying to be hip".

I got a chuckle over that one. :P

I imagine that was regarding the defuct newsprint edition.

I can't imagine dose.ca being anymore succesful, only cheaper to operate.

Read about it on my myspace page....

While its true I have advocated mandatory voting in the past that's not what I was talking about and I certainly didn't say that we need to do everything in our power to force participation.

Lest this thread be derailed by the usual nonsense we hear about lazy voters, I was refering to what I think we should or could be doing with the technology of the Internet - which is give the go-getters and keeners who want to vote more often on a greater range of issues the means to actually do so. I'm clearly talking about the anti-thesis of the so-called lazy voter.

What we have instead is people doing everything they can to limit participation which includes feeding and fuelling irrational fears about the Internet.

Modern Democracy has never worked with any technology as well as print technology, which was cutting edge in the 19th century when it was born.

I suspect print technology scared the bejeezuz out of the same sorts of people who are scared of the Internet. Its fairly obvious its democracy they're all actually afraid of.

The Internet started as a communication network to link universities. The original web browser was developed as a way to manage electronic documents. Today it is integral to the operation of the majority of businesses and they would have trouble functioning without it.

The only thing faddish about the internet is the content offered and the businesses trying to make money from that content.
