There is something pathetic about a US president putting the reputation of the US government behind the warranty of a Chevrolet Cavalier.

Quebec no longer produces cars. Canada no longer produces radios or TVs. (Who remembers Electrohome, Zenith or Philco?) Eaton's is gone, and Amazon is one firm whose share price has risen.

Trade and technology change how we do things.

It has fallen to Obama to be the guy on watch when this death occurs. He can keep it on life support (at some expense) or just accept the true situation. No one should blame him, Harper or McGuinty for happening to be the doctor on duty.

Heard at the CTV watercooler today concerning auto bailouts:

So...when did Canada stop making it's own decisions? Do we just follow whatever the messiah (Obama) says?

Harper stopped making decisions as soon as he was elected.

In Quebec, and I suspect outside of Ontario, this is a non-issue. (I talked to people about this today and it wasn't an issue.) People reckon that Ontario is a synonym for Canada and so obviously, the federal government cares about what happens in Ontario. Moreover, what happens in the US is about the same as in Canada/Ontario.

Yet, b_c, you raise a good point. This whole drama is sad for many people, including Harper. Harper was acccused of being a Bush lapdog and now he's apparently an Obama lapdog.

If I criticized Harper, I'd say he lacked imagination.

I guess that's a good thing...the "ROC" can do without the drama.

This inevitability was projected from the 'git go. The politicians are never saviors.

No crowd around the GT-R...big crowd around the Z.

Going to the Vancouver show today, we'll see. The GT-R isn't cheap but Autocar in the UK figures it's a better car than the Porsche 911 GT3. Faster and cheaper to.

GT-R was $81,000....370Z without all the goodies can be had for about $31,000.

The Mazda 5 was 25K (inc GST PST Air tax etc etc...) with air, auto and 17" wheels ......why are bigger wheels a plus?

Bigger wheels on a car usually means lower profile tires and better handling. I can't get past the Mazda 5's pregnant guppy look.

there you go running your mouth again b_c

low profile tires give for better handling?

!?

low profile tires merely mean better aesthetics and sportier look... it also allows for more mag per wheel ratio.

But low profile tires are noisier, bumpier and less reliable- I would know. got my 2000 A6 on some 18" S4" type alloys and got about 4 tire punctures since... (mind you MINUS the winter)

bigger tires however (mainly width but also radius) (while needing more power to spin) are indeed more adherent and do upgrade handling noticeably.

but for a lowly mazda 5? its a great nifty grocery getter, reliable too... why rice it up? go for the stock mazda 5 branch wheels ... they look legit..

why upgrade wheel size (and hence lower reliability and heighten cost of purchase for new tires as well as increase road noise? its not like your going to take it to the track for god's sake... leave it alone.

They were added at no extra cost because they were pu on by mistake. I mentioned it to the dealer twice (my due dilligence) and when he confirmed they were the 17" he said someting like, congratulations, you got a free upgrade. I still had second thoughts given that I didn't know what the benefits of the larger, lower profile tires were and considered going back to have tem changed but I did some research which was pretty easy to find because my question is pretty common.

It seems that the low profile tires do impart better handling simply because the sidewall shim is minimized. I have also heard but I can confirm the larger tires impart less wear and tear on the tranny because there are less revolutions per mile. It sound reasonable...

On the negative side....bigger tire, bigger price...

Yes they do. Better handling ,, but maybe a little bumpier ride. Do not confuse ride comfort with handling.

Some may be designed specifically for that purpose, but low profile tires do offer better handling overall

You are an absolute idiot if you use low profile tired in the winter. My pal has stock summer tires on his Mazda3. He also has another set of winter tires. His 'all seasons' could not get him out of my driveway one time. It was a sudden snow hit, the next coupld days he swapped out the tires.

bigger tires however (mainly width but also radius) (while needing more power to spin) are indeed more adherent and do upgrade handling noticeably.

Bigger mushy tires do NOT give you better handling. It will give you a more comfortable ride though.

If the overal circumfrence of the tire/rim is the same .. then the tranny will work just as hard. You are going to a larger rim with a smaller side wall tire. So your 17" rims plus low profile tires is the same radius as the 15" rim with large side wall tires.

They spin at the same rate regardless.

Looks like Mitt Romney was right, when he wrote his op-ed back in November '08

Let Detroit Go Bankrupt

IF General Motors, Ford and Chrysler get the bailout that their chief executives asked for yesterday, you can kiss the American automotive industry goodbye. It won’t go overnight, but its demise will be virtually guaranteed.

A managed bankruptcy may be the only path to the fundamental restructuring the industry needs. It would permit the companies to shed excess labor, pension and real estate costs. The federal government should provide guarantees for post-bankruptcy financing and assure car buyers that their warranties are not at risk.

In a managed bankruptcy, the federal government would propel newly competitive and viable automakers, rather than seal their fate with a bailout check.

If you change the overall diameter of the wheel and tire, the speedometer has to be recalibrated. If you go to a larger wheel it is necessary to mount a lower profile tire to keep the diameter the same or recalibrate the speedo. Going to a larger diameter tire has the same effect as changing gear ratios which will have a negative effect on acceleration but a positive effect on fuel economy.

True, if you have separate rims for snows, going with a smaller size rim and a narrower higher profile tire will give you better traction in snow.

We use all seson only for the seasons that Southern Cal gets....for the winter it's cheap steel rims and snow tires....we're canadian eh?

That's a good article.

IMHO, Romney is too wooden but may be in 2012, wooden will be the new cool.

Your party didn't want him because of his religion.

I thought he was best suited for the Republican nomination and had predicted it would be him and Obama as the nominees. What I didn't expect was the severe backlash against him that seemed strongly related to religion in a lot of cases
