CrazeeEddie Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 I don't think secular is the right word.....But indeed the Liberals have token representation outside of Ontario and Montreal whereas the Conservative have strong support in every province except NFLD. Looking at the stats, although it does refute your token support outside of Ontario, I can agree that the CPC does have decent support across the board (25-35%) Quote Nobody actually wants equality. It's just a word thrown around to achieve one's own superiority.
Jerry J. Fortin Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 Get back on topic folks! Justin is capable of delivering the leadership that citizens want. He is young, he has actually worked for a living. He is green leaning. He has the old man's way with words. Watch this guy in the near future. Quote

Mad_Michael Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 Westerners hate Pierre Trudeau, I especially hate him. He is the reason why the Liberals will never ever get elected in rural Canada again and why I despise the Liberals. As for writing off rural Canada, where are the Liberals now??? Westerners hate Trudeau because it is apparently part of their culture to hate "eastern intellectuals" (and Toronto). Eastern intellectuals and Torontonians (generally) have learned these facts long ago and don't really care too much about it. This is rather similar to the longstanding rural American cultural suspicion against intellectualism I might add. And as Trudeau also proved, you can hold a majority government pretty much ignoring the west. That's a fact. One can't do it ignoring Ontario or Quebec. This is simple electoral calculus, nothing more. If Justin Trudeau gets any higher in the Liberal caucus, the Liberals can kiss Western Canada goodbye for another 50 years. I have heard this person speak and it sends shivers down my spine. Expect the red tories to flee the party when Trudeau gains prominence. The Liberals don't need to go left, they need to go back to the centre. I agree that the Liberal party needs to return to the center. I was always a big supporter of Paul Martin as Finance Minster and PM. Canada's sound economic position right now in the midst of market turmoil around the world we owe to Paul Martin's run as Finance Minister, not Harper's government. As for Justin, he is not his father and doesn't have a Ph.D. in Law and is not a distinguished philosopher-academic as his father was. He doesn't have that stature and likely never will. All Justin has is the name, handsome good looks and some charisma. That's enough to get him into politics and will give him some stature in Quebec and the Liberal party. He is still quite young and it will be many years before he could be in a position to vie for a leadership position. And I repeat, Justin deserves some kudos for taking on a tough to win BQ riding against a sitting incumbent - and winning. Quote

Moonbox Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying Anyway, to get back to the original argument, the comment was made that the Liberals were a secular party, representing only one region. My counterargument is that they are no more secular than our current governing party. I apologize, I meant to say that the CPC is any more of a NATIONAL party than the Liberals are. Maybe the use of the word 'secular' was wrong but the fact is that the Liberals garner the vast vast vast majority of their support from Toronto and Montreal. Is it not remarkable that nearly HALF the Liberal seats in the country came from TWO cities? It speaks volumes about where the Liberals are in terms of the spectrum of Canadians they connect with. This was not always the case, but as Canada's priorities and ways of thinking have shifted, Liberal ideals have remained entrenched. 'Liberals know best' is a phenomenon that western Canada has completely and totally rejected, along with Ontario outside of the 416 and 905. This is not going to reverse itself. The conservatives have a long way to go as far as wooing regions that the Liberals have typically coddled, but at least they're breaking ground there. Both the Conservatives and the NDP are pushing for a two party system. I am not convinced that two parties that divergent is the best thing for Canada. I have always believed in moderation. It would leave a lot of people not voting because neither party fits there needs. Edited October 15, 2008 by independent Quote

Dern it must be a pain in the ass that us dang rednecks don't need a fancy edumacation to make money!!! Seriously, Trudeau has a piss poor attitude regarding the west and so do his supporters, as per your post. If the Liberals want to form government again, they have to respect the rural areas, something they are not doing. Justin is a socialist and would be a disaster for the Liberal party. Having a Trudeau as a main player in the Liberal party will shut the Liberals out of Western Canada for 50 years. Screw the West we'll take the rest, how well did that work in 1984??? jdobbin Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 We don't hate Harper. Large ethnic communities vote Liberal because they have been pandered to by this government for the 13 years leading up to the election. Metro Toronto and surrounding areas support the Liberals. The vast majority of the rest of province support conservative governments. Fairly insulting to the ethnic communities. Maybe if Conservative supporters want to make gains there that it would be good to try and reach out. Seems some Conservatives do but the hostility of others probably drives them away. The Liberal Party is the most regionally secular government in Canada....I would go almost so far as to say moreso than the Bloc. The Tories won and will continue to win as long as the Liberals feel they can tell non-urban Canadians what they want. The Liberals are certainly damaged but attacking cities isn't likely a majority winning strategy either for the Tories. Quote

Nevertheless, 118 seats without Alberta, ergo, most MPs are not Albertans in fact, there are twice as many Ontario conservative MPs than Albertan. Topaz Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 I'm glad Justin was elected and IF the Conservatives are going to be in the same frame of mind the last time we watched the House, then Justin better be prepared for one of the Cons to say something negative about his dad when Justin asked a question and the Con. doesn't like the question. I really hope that Harper demands more from his people than what we have seen in the past! On the good side , Justin was a former school teacher and he'll know how to treat children with bad mouths! Mr.Canada Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 I listened to a few of this young mans interviews after his successful campaign and I must say that I was impressed with his poise and control. He actually has some personality not like Harper who seems devoid of expression at times. I would probably vote for him if he were in my riding and may support the Liberals in 10-15 years when he takes the reins. That however will depend on how he explains himself for his book in which he pretty much puts Fidel Castro and the whole communist system on a pedestal. He wrote it a few years ago and people mature and views change I understand that. He will have to answer for them at some point if he sticks with politics, trust me. Sounds to me like he isn't a Liberal. His Dad wasn't either and he dragged a lot of people from the Liberal party over to the left with him and they basically stayed there, opening up their candy store of Canadian values, highlighting the special interests and politically correct aisles for big savings. The Canadian people surprisingly ignored Pierre's affinity for things communist. He gave it a shrug and I imagine people will afford Justin the same privilege - People mature and views change, you know. I don't see too much difference between the NDP and the Liberals except the Liberals like to wear wool suits and ties. Perhaps a few items in the special interests aisle would be different but they both like to meddle and man the till. On second thought, the NDP would bankrupt us in no time planning how to best share the wealth - not realizing they can't just print it up. White Doors Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 Justin Trudeau happens to be a very eloquent, respectful and itelligent young man who connects with the average man as he was a school teacher and did some valuable charity work with world poverty organizations ..... gains under Harper ? .... interesting terms you use ...... I don't call spending $300 million on his own personal quest for ego and power against the wishes of the public a gain for us .... Do me a favour call your local CPC candidate you canvased for and inform him the public wants Harper to get back to work and make the minority function by actually developing some policies with the other parties and quit whinning about ...
