Glad to see the billions the US has spent on brainwashing the public is not limitted to their own ignorant populace. Jack Layton really needs to own this. If he is smart enough to come out and explain why prohibition is NOT good policy, and loudly and proudly proclaim the NDP's intention to decriminalize cannabis he could get enough votes to form a government. geoffrey
Most people are more concerned with real issues, like their job, or health care, rather than some "prohibition" that is not really even enforced. It's not a major issue to anyone but a few in their late twenties living in their parent's basements.
kimmy
Star wars? Value system? Peace Tower? "We should adopt more modernized laws around marijuana than the US has... " "... a more mellow attitude... " The video title, "Jack Layton on Marijuana" could certainly be misconstrued... FWIW, no complaints with what Layton is actually saying here, aside from the praise being lavished on Michael Moore. However, I don't think the Hell's Angels would ever allow pot to be legalized. There'd be assassinations. -k

The days of Ward Cleaver and Fred Rutherford are long gone. Sorry to break it to you.

Canada banned cannabis (in keeping with a racist Commonwealth tradition)...years before the USA. So who is "ignorant"?
kimmy
If there are one-issue voters whose one-issue is marijuana... I ... ... somehow that strikes me as having probably a pretty low impact. -k

If you look at all of the world today and your biggest issue is the legalisation of something you'll never realistically be prosecuted for having... you obviously lack a level of intelligence needed to find your polling station anyways. Sad pathetic people. Any one issue voter on this topic should really just stay home.

Any one issue voter on this topic should really just stay home. You are the one who is ignorant, or if not ignorant, then a bold faced liar. Thousands of Canadians, mostly young people and minorities are indeed prosecuted for having Cannabis every year. There has in fact been a 30% increase in cannabis possession charges since Harper has been prime minister. I work as a supervisor for people doing community service and fine options, and the vast majority of people I have been asked to supervise are there for cannabis related charges. Saying that people will never be realistically prosecuted for having Cannabis is an outright lie, the statistics on the thousands of canadians saddled with criminal records over cannabis every year are well documented and easy to find. cybercoma
Is the prohibition of marijuana and the prohibition of alcohol comparable? The subject is worth examining and I think looking at the history of alcohol prohibition in Canada is a good start.
