Wild Bill Posted July 23, 2008 Report Posted July 23, 2008 http://news.sympatico.msn.ctv.ca/abc/home/...eal_hunt_080723 If European politicians take a cheap shot at Canada would we be justified in retaliating? Maybe closing our ports to European fishing ships? It's common knowledge they just overfish and ruin the fishing grounds with their drag nets anyway. Perhaps we should make them understand that picking on our sealers can have a price. bush_cheney2004 Posted July 23, 2008 Report Posted July 23, 2008 If sealing and seal products are so valuable to local economies, why don't they just farm them like other livestock or fish? The spiked club reminds me of a "B.C." comic strip. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

Maybe closing our ports to European fishing ships? It's common knowledge they just overfish and ruin the fishing grounds with their drag nets anyway. Perhaps we should make them understand that picking on our sealers can have a price. A token price maybe, we should have been closing our ports to EU boats that overfish years ago. It seems a little late now. In the meantime, its a little discouraging to see the EU is trying to target the supply side of the equation through prohibition. They need to go after the demand by taxing the living snot out of people who buy inhumanely harvested seal products. If criminals get into the act then keep throwing the book at consumers who avoid paying their taxes. Loyola Hearn can say all she wants but the bottom line is the market will probably dictate this. Judging by the EU's actions the demand for humanely harvested seal products is still not being met. The sealers are just going to have to work harder or start farming them as BC suggests. Good luck. By the way... Stop seal farming now! Edited July 23, 2008 by eyeball Quote I said now watch what you say they'll be calling you a radical, a liberal, oh fanatical criminal

They are screwing us around with GMO's, and now with this. There is a much better trading partner down south and in Asia. There are other places we can trade with, and we would not lose out taking trade action against the EU. Remiel Posted July 24, 2008 Report Posted July 24, 2008 I do not begrudge European's their stance on genetically modified food (I admit I am rather sympathetic to the position, however), but this stuff with the seals is ridiculous. If they don't want seal products, no one is forcing them to buy them, but to sanction our economy at large is just cheap. To add to the list of retaliations, should we refuse to trade with the European Union because of Bull Fighting? Quote

To add to the list of retaliations, should we refuse to trade with the European Union because of Bull Fighting? Bull fighting? And bull running in Pampalona? Excellent point! Now you've raised my suspicions. We have no end of GreenPeace activists, McCartneys and even Richard (MacGuyver) Andersons to attack the sealers. Yet these same people never say a word about Spain and its bull sports. Almost seems contrived, doesn't it? Or maybe I'm just too suspicious. Crops grow better and produce more??? They're easier to grow??? I think Greenpeace must be the largest and most powerful lobbyist group over there. GMO's, seals, what's next? Then there is the Europeans and their completely lazy attitude towards Afghanistan. If I were Harper I'd be furious and would tossing about sanctioning their economy. Lets say freezing durum exports to Italy for starters. HisSelf Posted July 29, 2008 Report Posted July 29, 2008 OK. What are their objections? Lets sit down and work something out. Is the seal hunt unnecessarily cruel? I have no idea. What would be a humane way to go about things? This is a tough issue. You can go into any supermarket in North America or Europe and find veal (just for starters). Maybe it's time to sneak a few cameras into the slaughterhouses of Europe. So far, I've seen a lot of heat and not a lot of light on this issue. Quote ...

These protests and European objections have been going on since the 70's. Have you been really busy with something else? I thought that I was the one who didn't get out much. One thing's for sure. My knowledge of the issue is from watching TV and reading the paper, sources of information that I admit are dodgy. So I ask for enlightenment and that's wrong? No wonder we have so many klowns on this forum. Quote ...
