Well, not in Alberta. Ralph Klein has been pushing for private health care for years.

Pretty hard to evaluate Harper's economic plan as it isn't out yet. But both the Liberal and NDP proposed economic plans present balanced budgets. Harper's promises, when added up, are over $14 million in the red. And just where is Harper's plan anyway? All he's told anyone is "soon."

Your sentence is borderline discriminatory. There will always be abuse of any "system." I'd rather err on the side of the abused. Also, in legal proceedings, there must be proof of abuse. I don't approve of the recent Government handout to all residents of these schools. But having said that, the Gov't may have done that because there are so many bonafide cases.

And let's not forget the physical and mental abuse that was endured during the process. The residential schools were set up with the best intentions. Even today it is reasonable to argue that natives need to at least partially assimilate into mainstream society in order to get out of their poverty trap. The residential school approach was heavy handed according to today's norms, however, when they were set up 'white' kids were still getting the strap in regular schools. Insisting that residential schools were some non lethal concentration camp for natives is unfair revisionist history. I don't think you understand the gravity of the abuse Sparhawk. I'm not talking about strapping here. Here are some sites to check out. http://www.ainc-inac.gc.ca/gs/schl_e.html http://www.usask.ca/nativelaw/rsbib.html http://www.ncsa.ca/residential.asp

No I do not. Native culture worked relatively fine in its own way. It was the conquest and subsequent destruction of that culture that paved the way for today's social problems. The residential schools were designed to destroy native culture. They were not some well-intentioned experiment gone awry. And let's not forget the physical and mental abuse that was endured during the process.

Martin speech- Harper seriously on the ropes !
newbie replied to USA_Liberal's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Stand up for Canada is their slogan, when their own leader can't acknowledge he loves his country? -
I agree. I don't know who Steve Paikin is but I thought he was a bit too chirpy as a moderator. He at least invited the candidates to debate however whereas the French moderator seemed to be going through the motions and looking at her watch. Good grief. Now they make fun of the moderators.

And how old was Harper just a few years ago? Not exactly a teenager. It have been my experience that the lefties have more openness to change, not the other way around.

Not. Try this: http://www.ccsd.ca/pr/2003/aboriginal.htm uh, from your link: Although a disproportionate number of the poor are aboriginal, aboriginals comprise only 3.4% of the poor in the cities studied. Or, as Argus put it, "there are more poverty-stricken whites than poverty-stricken natives, simply out of sheer numbers." -k The intent was to show it per number of First Nations individuals vs. whites. Black Dog has it right.

Where has the left said they hate all Americans? edited: And where have I said (a Liberal) I hated all Americans. -
Canada and the U.S. Aren't Much Different
newbie replied to tml12's topic in Canada / United States Relations
If the election results reflect the recent opinion polls, the rest of the world would think that Canadians are crazy too. Yeah, especially when Harper crawls into bed with dubya. -

The arrogance! But I have to remind myself of the ridiculous and vile that comes from CPC on this forum. -

Liberals to attack Harper AFTER debate

Harper killed Last Night, Welcome Mr. Prime Minister

In all honesty, I thought the one who did best was Duceppe. Martin stumbed a few times, Harper presented as too greasy, and Layton too stiff. But there was clearly no winner as such in my view. -
kimmy, I was responding to Argus' comments where he said: ..." In Europe, where human rights laws are far more stringent than here, where even a private individual can be arrested and go to prison for saying unkind things about minorities, those anti-racism/anti-discrimination laws have actually encouraged the expansion of anti-semitic, and racist groups... " Is he suggesting that the more stringent human rights agencies become, the more racist our society becomes?

Harper Dragging Canada into Exteme Danger
newbie replied to River_God's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
River, these guys won't refute your posts because they won't read them. They want the quick one or two liner zinger that they're used to posting. You got good stuff but maybe post a little shorter items and more often. -
Did you actually read the article? Here are some highlites that maybe you missed: Conservative candidate Blaine Calkins, running in the Alberta riding of Wetaskiwin, said, "Conservative Party policy is that we do not respond to surveys or questionnaires of any kind." and conservative Candidate Rakesh Khosla in Halifax West, responded to a Herald reporter asking about the meeting, "We've been told by Ottawa that we don't talk about that . . . That's a dropped subject." Next time try to respond to the article and avoid conservative policy of ad hominem.

Harper and Richard Perle (aka Darth Vader) are soulmates
newbie replied to River_God's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
tml12, I respect you opinions. I do worry about the cozy relationship Harper might have with Bush. We've seen what a nightmare he is and what he has done to the USA. He is not a man of his word and thus I am concerned about a Harper/Bush alliance. And yes, I know we've got a handful of our military in Iraq. I just don't want anymore going over there and fighting in actual combat for a war that should never have been. It's the uncertainly I guess. -
In another thread, I invited you to attempt to paraphrase or summarize this message, to try to distill some sense out of it, and see whether you still feel it's a great post after you've done so. I still hope you might take a crack at it; it would be an interesting exercise. -k It speaks for itself. I'm sorry if you have difficulty reading river's posts. They take a little time and thought. Are they rants? Yes. Are they comprehensible, absolutely. However, it would help to have an open mind as a criterion. That may prove to be an insurmountable problem on this board however. .

Euthanasia and suicide? any difference?
newbie replied to StarSong's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
I think a type of euthenasia is used more than we think for terminally ill people. Both my parents were "o.d." to make their last few days/moments more comforable. We knew the excessive pain medicine would kill them, but they were in a state where there was no recovery and little brain function. This is perfectly acceptable and comes under the heading of "comfort level" on the health board's medical directive sheets.
