Minimum Wage and a Roboticized Economy
overthere replied to socialist's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
The food will be too expensive for consumers with mandated and greatly increased operating costs. Yours is a classic supply management idea, which without fail results in artificially high costs to customers. -
In point of fact, Canadian citizens have no right at all to any form of health care, simply through being citizens. It is necessary to be a resident, which is unconnected to citizenship.

4.5 game lead over Yankees now. The coffin lid is not yet nailed down, but the hammer is poised.

Minimum Wage and a Roboticized Economy
overthere replied to socialist's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
$15 min wage will close the doors on a bunch of fast food joints in Alberta. People buy cheap food because it is cheap, and cracking the wages bill 50% will mean many fewer jobs. And people work unskilled jobs because they are unskilled. That won';t change, other than the jobs avail;able at the new rate won't be there any more. Oh, and going from $10/hour to $15/hour is not a small percent- it is 50%. Oh, and a prime reason for the NDP to want to do this is less obvious, but for sure a factor. People making are not unionized in part because the union industry knows they cannot afford to pay even small dues. But it gets a lot more viable at $15/hour and up. And guess who organized labour votes for? -
x 2. We used to call it 'High Test'. More buzz per bottle.

It was not a difficult catch either. It is a routine infield drill, over the shoulder catches. that is totally not relevant to the infield fly rule. Balls hit to shallow outfield are still subject to the rule. But... I checked and the call or non-call is not subject to appeal. It is one of the things I love about baseball. It is so fucking complex and laden with rules and interpretations of rules. It's like chess. I wish that I could select camera angles at home so I could watch the real game, which is incredibly subtle. They show only the pitcher catcher hitter runner stuff. They never show the little adjustments and play away from the play, which alters nearly with every pitch and shifting situation.

Toronto wants to avoid becoming Houston Astros, who are demonstrating a late fade. To me, Price has not been particularly dominant. He walked a bunch and left a bunch on base last night. The double play in the 5th last night was a play I had not seen before, in many years of playing and coaching baseball. Runners on first and second, nobody out. Braves hitter pops to very shallow right field, or deep in the infield...... Both runners semi=freeze, anticipating he'll catch it. Pennington picks it up, guns to second and forces out the runner coming from first. Goins fires to theird, where the runner from second is tagged out. Now there are 2 out, runner on first base- a much better situation for the Jays and a fine defensive series. But...... was it an infield fly? Becuase if it was, it would have been one out, runners on first and second bases. Was it in the infield or outfield? An infielder was under it, neither outfielder was remotely close. It would not have been a circus catch for Pennington, I was a bit surprised he didn't make it. Or... did he not make it on purpose, knowing he would get one for sure and maybe two outs? The home plate ump makes this call and he makes it LOUD, as soon as the ball goes up pretty much. Pennington had a couple or more seconds and did not hear 'infield fly, batter is out!". Either way, a pretty good play by Pennington. If I was the Atlanta manager, I'd be arguing that non-call- though I do not know if it is appealable.

I've been saying all along that no win is a given or guarantee in MLB. And it isn't with Price pitching either. The Braves pitcher tonight has a better ERA than every Jays starter except Price.

I believe I said much the same , but with 300 less words. I'd settle for something that was modertaely entertaining or funny. Moore has never been a source for truthifying.

The Bible is to history as a priest is to sexual counselling.

It has been quite a while since Moore made a movie worth watching. I know he won't be invading My Wallet unless this is a dramatic(or comedic) turnaround for him.

'Bible' and 'History' is an oxymoron.

Do you mean the Jays? Tulo and EE are recent casualties, and both players are badly needed in the stretch and further. Goins and Pennington are able defensively, but I'd still rather have Tulos glove and bat in the game. And Pennington is pretty much all defence so far. Smoak and Colabello are both Ok at first(Smoak better than OK) but neither can equal EE as a DH. The Jays will be tested with two starters out of the lineup, and Tulo might be gone for longer than 2 to 3 weeks.. No, winning the division must remain their goal. I can guarantee that Alex Alphabet and Gibbons have not had a single word exchanged about the Royals.

I think ther Jays lost the Sunday game because they were exhausted by all the hits and running in the first three games. That was seriously embarrassing for the Yankees.
-
Neither will Buehrle. Not as a starter.
-
They didn't just lose the series against the Sox, they got their asses handed to them 2 out of 3 and could have easily lost the third game. So yeah, not playing well. As we have already established, there are no easy wins. The Sox are sucking all season and beat the Jays handily. The Jays also have recent losses to a worse team, the Phillies, and others. So don't count your chickens just yet. The Jays have worked magic for 6 weeks, and yet there are the Yankees: right with them still. Old don't matter when you win like they have.

What was the last movie you watched?
overthere replied to Moonlight Graham's topic in Arts and Culture
Cliff Roberson won an Academy Award for his role in Charly, but never had that usual rocket boost to his career after an Oscar. He is a very good actor though who made some pretty bad movies a bit better. Last movie I saw was Diary of a Teenage Girl. Bel Powley plays a 15 year old in 1970s San Francisco, who experiences a sexual awakening in an environment of permissiveness that is more than a bit creepy. Kristen Wiig is really good too as a mother who won't win any parenting awards. It's a subject not often visited in movies- a frank exploration of teen sexuality in a young woman. But in the end it was very good IMO, with an honesty rarely seen and a topic that is shunned. -
It is easy to lose track of the reality that Hutchison has sucked a lot more than he has pitched well. They are only 1.5 games ahead and not playing well . A 1.5 game lead is not much with 23 games to play, and the Wankees have a game in hand. It would be a huge collapse if the Jays did not get a wild card berth. The Jays have had a crazy good run since the all star break at 28-9, which means they have won 3 out of 4 games. Overall, they haven;t cracked .600 and probably won't before the season end. The mark of excellence is really at .600, 6 wins out of 10. There are only two teams at that level in MLB, both in the National League, and both barely at that. The Jays need to split this series in New York, I'd be happy with that. This is an unusual year. In the National League, the season is effectively over since the Giants are the closest contender to a WC berth and they are 9 games out. That is nearly impossible to make up. Also unusual is that three teams from one division are locks for the playoffs. In the AL, the only likely race is over the second WC berth. The Jays or Wanks will take the top WC slot, and Texas or Twins will fight over the second one.

I was wrong. 6 man rotation? Or are Stroman, Buehrle and Hutchison auditioning for a place in a 5 man rotation, odd man gets demotion? The Jays look a little bit now like the Jays of early season, a couple of games have swung on small things that could have gone either way. They need to arrive in NYC on a winning note. I like the way the Yanks lost last night, home run by Davis in the 9th at Yankee stadium. Healthy teams are crticial, and September can be a cruel month with everybody beat up. The Jays have some guys on the limp including Travis, Goins, maybe Martin, maybe Buehrle. The Yankees might have lost starter Eovaldi and Texeira remains hurt. That is worse for the Yankees because their offence is not so deep as the Jays, but the Jays pitching is still -to me- suspect. After Price, I don't have much confidence in their starters to win playoff games. And the Jays would see some very good opposition pitching in the playoffs. Here's hoping all our pitchers stay healthy. Why do they keep going to Aaron Loup? He has clearly lost his mojo.

bad planning is the reason around here. Nobody checks on those old coal mines that magically reappear beneath both subdivisions and a golf course.
-
It is barely worth talking about and should not rate any time on the legislative agenda.

somebody got put in jail in Canada for smoking pot? When was that? Really, who gives a shit in 2015? We just wasted 45 pages and some brain cells on a non-topic.

do not ever say that out loud again. I doubt that what the Yankees are doing or not doing will influence Jays pitching decisions much. And it is folly to assume anything, there are no easy wins. The very best teams in baseball win about 60% of their games........
-
I doubt the Jays have any plans to get Stroman back into a starting role unless it is some kind of multiple-injury scenario. And they definitely want to avoid the stupid one game wild card playoff scenario. Near the end of the season. If they think that they'll be in the wild card game, they will pretty much have to diddle their rotation to get Price as starter in that game. The playoffs start 2 nights after the WC game, so the rotation for that series is pooched from the beginning for the wild card winner. Win the division........! If they do, they are very likely to face the Astros, a much easier proposition than the Royals. Look at me, getting waaaaaay ahead of myself.
