Ignatieff proposes to recognize Quebec as a nation
mcqueen625 replied to Leafless's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Sure: why don't you come up with your own distinct language, customs, cultural traditions, etc. Please provide a short list of Quebec's distinct customs and cultural traditions. A short incomplete list in no particular order reviellons....boite a chansons.....festive des homards.....carnaval, sugering offs, feveres au lard....tortiere.....the most succesful film, television and literature industries in Canada, distinctive archeteture of la beause, gaspe, montreal.....cirque de soliel, celtic music........bagels, smoked meat, may wests, POM bakeries....kik cola, beire des pins, pea soup, St patricks day, social tollerance and equality, brutal winters, civil code, maiden names, revenche de creche.....Les Patriotes de ste Agathe..... Film?? Who watches mediocre Canadian crap. If you're talking about the porn on the French networks, then I guess they do have some film, but who in hell wants to watch dubbed or sub-titled crap on tv that they are paying good money to receive from either the cable or satellite providers. I discontinued the Movie Network subscription due to the lousy Canadian crap from Quebec. Quebec is a province and should not receive any special recognition, and especially no more moeny until they either decide to stay or go. Go would be my preferred option, and they can take their Acadian friends with them. -
$6.7 billion Surplus? Cut Taxes
mcqueen625 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
G & MWhy cut taxes with this "windfall"? 1. The federal government should never have collected this money in the first place. 2. If the provincial governments want to solve the "fiscal imbalance", let them raise their own taxes in the tax space the federal government has vacated. 3. Tax cuts will make it difficult for any future federal government to raise spending. 4. Tax cuts will make the Conservative government popular and give it a majority. 5. Canada's debt market needs the federal government paper for liquidity. 6. The federal debt can be rolled over at low cost. 7. Flaherty and the bureaucrats can have fun deciding which taxes to cut. Announce the tax cuts as permanent. Now we have the idiots from Quebec attempting another round of blackmail. Give us $3.9 billion or we will bring down the government when the budget is voted on in the Spring, says Gilles Duceppe. Maybe it is time that the feds tell Quebce that the Liberal's are gone, and the present PM is not from Quebec, Thank God, and that the feds are through trying to pay-off Quebec in hopes that someday they may just be happy to be part of Canada. They already get far more out of Canada than they give, and that has got to stop. Most province have Ottawa collect all Income taxes and then decide how much will come back to that province in teh form of transfer payments. In the case of Quebec, Ottawa never gets their hands on Quebec's portion of income taxes because they run their own little tax bureaucracy, talk about duplication of services. Anyway Quebecois do not send the provincial income tax to Ottawa, and then want all of the federal portion, and then some sent to them as well. Time to turn off the faucet, until Quebec; Quits whining Quits threatening to leave Quits asking for more than their share . Until they do, give them less or tell them they know wherer the door is, and not to let it hit them on the way out. -
The NDP are the New Left Wing Liberals
mcqueen625 replied to SamStranger's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I agree that the NDP will NEVER, EVER, EVER get a seat in Alberta- but thats not to say that they wont be the official opposition, cause they will... Where are they to get seats? Honestly, I think they could pick up a few in Quebec, British Columbia, and Ontario- not to mentino their strong holds in Manitoba. Dont get me wrong. I am not a New Democrat AT ALL- I am a Tory- but I would rather have an NDP opposition that has policy ideas, then a Liberal Opposition that votes down everything but has no alternative to present to Canadians. Who are you kidding, In Ontario? Especially since Bob Rae is now the leading contender for the Liberals and both of these parties have in mind to be all things to all people from birth to death. That costs money, mega-money and Bob Rae NDP/Liberal showed Ontarians just what the NDP/Liberals will do if they ever get a chance at the pursestrings of Canada. We think we are overtaxed as Canadians now, we have seen nothing if either of these parties gets another chance. -
Liberals Using sexist Card via Stronach

If you listened to the new broadcast Peter McKay never used the term Dog, and Liberal member did, and Peter supposedly just made a gesture, they said toward where she sits. Besides, if the shoe fit, wear it Bimbo, Belinda -
I would prefer someone who preaches freedom and democracy, rather than be under the thumb of a totalitarian regime such as China, who has one of the worst human rights records in the world. The U.N. has become a toothless tiger, and if they can't even enforce their own resolutions which were unamously supported by member states, than what is it's prupose. You can't vote on sanctions at the U.N. and then go home and speak and act as if the vote never took place. That is exactly what some of teh member states is doing including China and South Korea. Back in the days when Saddam was still runnig rough-shod over his own peoples, several votes took place at the U.N. regarding escalating sanctions to bring this rogue state into line, but countries like France, Russia and China balked at enforcing those sanctions, and many individuals from those countries made $million by skirting the sanctions, and maknig side deals for ill gotten oil credits. Koffi's own son was involved in that scandal himself, and we will never know whether Koffi himself was involved. The U.N. became reduntant when it was unable to fulfill it function of protecting human rights around the world. The most hypocrital part of the U.N. is that countries can still become member states even if they abuse their own people, like China, Iran, Iraq, Cuba, Venezuela, etc, etc. The U.N. should be totally disbanded and started anew with only countries who have demacratic principals and human rights legislation, that is enforced. If one of these countries ceases to be a democracy they should immediately be expelled from the organization. The excuse way back was to allow China to join and they would adopt freedoms and human rights for their people. How many years ago was it that China was made a member of the U.N. and they are still denying freedom and human rights to their own people, and the U.N. even gave them a veto on the Security Council, what a hypocritical organization.
-
I'm basically questioning the viability of the U.N. period considering the fact that even when sanctions are ordered getting some countries like France, China and Russia to comply wuth them is shaky at best, and even less likely if those countries are doing business with them, as was the case with Iraq. There was supposed to be an oil for food program which all of these countries mentioned above skirted, and even Koffi's son was embroiled in that scandal, as was Maurice Strong, Paul Martin's friend. All of those involved in the skirting of those sanctions, made mega-dollars skirting them. The U. N. at this point can't or won't even enforce their own sanctions which member states agreed to unanimously IE: Sudan Orders U.N. Envoy to Leave Country . Why because he was telling it like it is? The U.N. ordered an international force to intervene into the Sudan to stop the killing, raping and looting in Danfur, but the Sudanese government has now said that they will attack and such force. What good is the U.N. if they don't even have the where-with-all to tell Kartoum that those tropps are coming whether they like it or not. For some reason the Sudanese government is attempting to bring up the Jewish conspiracy into this fight, when they have nothing whatsoever to do with this. This is all about a totalitarian state killing their own people, and the U.N. does not have the balls to stop them.

Even New Brunswick is "Officially Bilingual" on paper only, the fact is that less than 17% of New Brunswicker's speak French. THat percentage may be going up because of the bilingual policy of the government of NB and the fact that unilingual English speaking NB are packing up in droves and heading west, because they cannot find meaningful employment in their province of birth. Employers in Ontario and the west are more interested in actual employment skills than they are in one's ability to speak French. Even the French Immersion programs in New Brunswick schools do not produce fluently bilingual graduates. One of the former Education Minister's in Bernard Lord's government. Elvy Robichaud, and Acadian stated publically that: "The French Immersion Program in New Brunswick was not designed nor expected to produce fluently bilingual graduates." This statement is contrary to the stated goals of being Officially Bilingual and the mechanism put in place to provide a level playing field for graduates applying for jobs designated as Bilingual (French Immersion Program in schools). This program is a total failure in providing that level playing field because as the Acadian Society has stated, it is not good enough to simply be bilingual as only an Acadian understands an Acadian, according to one of their former presidents. Since most Anglophone graduates of the French Immersion Program wind up with poor English skills and are only functionally bilingual upon graduation this leaves them with a total disadvantage since all bilingual jobs with the province requires fluency in French to qualify. Recently, Acadians who obtained their jobs because of their supposedly bilingual capabilities are now complaing that they are forced to work in the English language because clients and many co-workers speak English, so they are now demanding that they be allowed to work exclusively in their mother-tongue, French. New Brunswick is no longer even talking bilingual they are talking duality, and duality is nothing but segregation. South Africa spent years trying to overcome appartied, and the NB government and the Acadian Society is actively promoting this concept based on language instead of skin colour. No wonder people are climbing on buses, trains and planes and leaving NB in droves.

Cybercoma; You may well have moved from Windsor, ON to Fredericton, but Fredericton is definitely not Saint John, so don't profess to lecture on the air quality in Saint John since you don't live here. I moved out of Saint John to Grand Bay-Westfield in an effort to be able to breathe some unpolluted air. Yes I do have asthma and breathing the air in Saint John is definitely injurious. In fact a friend of mine whom I worked with often times could not work his shift when the wind was blowing in the wrong direction, because of difficulty breathing. We worked in a group home directly up the valley from the existing refinery, and I can't believe that you could even suggest that breathing petroleum fumes would not be injurious to one's health. The last attack my friend had after breathing the polluted air, he died on the way to the ER in the ambulance. Fredericton is close to 100 km. up the highway from Saint John, and I might be able to have the same opinion as you do, had I not lived most of my life breathing Saint John's polluted air. Everytime I drive toward Saint John on hazy day, as you approach the outskirsts of Saint John you can observe a browish haze hanging over the city, and I'm quite sure that Fredericton has no such brown haze, or at least I have never seen such a haze on my many trips to Fredericton for meetings.

That's fine for you to say, but you don't have to live every day with the pollution caused by the Irving's with their existing oil refinery and their pulp mill in the west side of teh City of Saint John, and the Irving Paper Mill on the East side right next to the oil refinery and in betwween those tow lives a power plant formerly owned by NB Power but now owned by the Irving's burning bunker "C". Saint John, NB has one of the highest incidents of Asthma in Canada, all thanks to the Irvings or their products. Given a choice the Irving's can stick their newest brainwave where the sun don't shine. The Irving Empire is concerned only with money and they could care less the dangers they are foisting on the people of Saint John. As for them being paying their fair share of the tax burden, all one has to do is look at the LNG Tax Deal that they coericed out of the City of Saint John, and the Government of New Brunswick.

South Korea is maintaining ties with North Korea even after they exploded a nuclear bomb accoring to a news article. They are funding a tourist destination and an industrail project which is pumping large amounts of money to the North Korean government's coffers. This makes me question the relevance of the U.N. considering the proposed new leader replacing corrupt Koffi, is from South Korea. I believe that the U.N. has become a non-starter and a total waste of our tax dollars. The U.N. supposedly just imposed strict sanctions on this isolated regime, and for South Korea to continue on business as usual seems to undermine the international communities will regarding North Korea and it nuclear capabilities to wage war, and to have a new leader of the U.N. coming from South Korea is even more bizarre. Maybe it's time to cut our losses and cut off fiunding to this useless bureaucracy called the U.N. If we want to donate foreign aid ourselves without the U.N. and teh World Bank, at least we will have accountability and credit on the ground for our contributions. As it now stands neither the U.N. nor the World Bank are obliged to disclose what our foreign aid contributions are spent on nor whcih countries the money is used. For all we know this money could be going to North Korea, and China while millions of their people starve why they spend enormous sums on theri militaries.

Homosexuality a mental disorder
mcqueen625 replied to Leafless's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Well, I want to make sure that nobody thinks I'm condemning anyone. There's nothing to condemn in my opinion. A person is born homosexual, that's quite obvious. However, a certain type of defect seems to have to exist in order for that to take place. What will be interesting, is when, if it happens, but when medicine and technology evolve far enough to be able to correct such defects. Such procedures are done on other types of conditions and abnormalities at the present time to babies yet to be born. I wonder what will happen, and what the ethical implications of those actions will be in regards to homosexuality. If we can just isolate the gene that causes one to become homosexual maybe that gene can be manipulated to change it before the person is born. Obviously something is wrong, because nature designed not only human but animal genitals to fit together in order to continue the species. Regardless how two people of the saem sex attempt to mate, tehy cannot reproduce. This proves that something is screwy in their makeup, like it or not. I'm not homophobic, I'm just stating the obvious. So yes, homosexuality is not normal behaviour, if it were, everyone would be doing it without thought. I find it repulsive to see two people of the same sex flaunting their relationship in public. Keep it off the TV and in the bedroom! -
This is completely disgusting and a provocation by racists -- certainly an abuse of tax-payers' money. Sorry, B.Max, but somehow I find that the airing of disgusting racism on state television is out-of-order. Just as an observation, most modern science fiction (novels / drama) portray futuristic inter-galactic civilization as multicultural. They have humans and humanoids of all sorts living together. War between them is usually a conflict of wealth or controlling resources -- as opposed to petty and trivial things such as the sizes or shapes or creed of the various races. I these people are immigrating to a western country they should expect to having to adopt a western lifestyle. Why should the host country change the way they live in order to make some immigrant feel at home. Damn it they are not home, they have come to another country for the most part to improve their lots in life, so tell me again why the peoples in that culture should change to accodate immigrants. If they want to retain their culture do it at home, but don't expect the taxpayers of the host country to foot the bill so immigrants can feel all cozy. If they don't want to adapt to western values, then maybe they should think twice before boarding that plane. In Ontario, Muslim extremists even attempted to have the Government of Ontario adopt Sheria Law. Fortunately, through lobbying McGintey changed his mind, because initially he thought it was a good idea (another Liberal moron). Sheria Law would specifically target Muslim women and allow some Imam to impose archiac traditions on Muslim women right here in Canada. Sheria Law has no place in Canada, and if these people want to live under that ancient, backward traditions then maybe they should think seriously about going back to their place of birth.

This episode illustrates why the UN should be abolished. We should have been at the barracks, not at the UN drafting papers. NK does not care what any paper says. SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- The U.N. Security Council unanimously approved tough sanctions against North Korea for its claimed nuclear test, but divisions over how to enforce them signaled that implemenation may not be easy. One of the biggest differences was over a call on countries to inspect cargo leaving and arriving in North Korea to prevent any illegal trafficking in unconventional weapons or ballistic missiles. The final resolution was softened from language authorizing searches, but was still unacceptable to China -- the North's closest ally and largest trading partner -- which said it would not carry out any searches. This article illistrates how useless the U.N. really is, and should be abolished forthwith. It has become a toothless tiger, an organization who's time is past. It is an organization that started out with the right idea, but allowed undemocratic countries like China, North Korea, Cuba, and other third world dictatorships into the fold. This is an organization that now has absolutely no power nor will to police the world to ensure that another world war cannot happen. If anything, with the U.N. in charge we are more likely to end up in a large scale war. This is an organization who talks and procrastinates rather than acts, largely due to countries like China, France & Russia who all have a penchant for doing business with rogue states like Iraq, Iran, Northt Korea, China, and the thing that really makes the U.N. redundant is the fact that France, Russia and China have been given vito power over any actions that may be taken to enforce U.N. decisions. This is an organization full of appointed bureaucrats who are held to no accountability. For this organization to work the way it was supposed to, these individuals need to be elected through some type of international election process, and any nation that is not a democracy should be precluded from joining. Further any nation who bceases to be a democracy such as Venezuela should lose their membership until they once again become a democracy. This would ensure that countries like China, Iran, North Korea would never become member states let alone have a veto power at the Security Council table.

Anger in Holland over 'apartheid' Islamic hospital
mcqueen625 replied to scribblet's topic in The Rest of the World
Yet if it was a white Christian hospital I bet there would be a lot of people on this forum that would say thats ok and anyone saying it wasnt was not respecting religious freedoms. It is a private religious institution. Who cares. Use the regular hospital system already in place. Im anti-religious and I have no problem with religous people having their own hospitals if they choose as long as I dont have to use it or have my tax money pay for it and I can still get healthcare elsewhere. It amazes me how people scream and cry about religous freedoms for Chritians on this forum ( ie on gay marriage) but when it comes to religious freedoms for Islamic people its a different story. Thats "prejudice and racism pure and simple". I'll give you an example of how this thinking is wrong-headed. New Brunswick is supposedly the only "Officiall Bilingual" Province in Canada, and all hospitals in the province are bilingual so they could serve both linguistic groups. Great idea except that now in Moncton we have two hospitals, one for French and one for English patients even though both hospitals employ bilingual staff. Now in Saint John, NB where less than 6% of the population professes French as their mother-tongue, we have a new situation. The Province paid to open a French only school within a provincially built cultural centre, and I didn't have a problem with that until the Acadian Society recently demanded that they be able to open their own medical Clinic to serve French only patients in that centre, and I also didn't have a problem with that until that demand was that the local Saint John Regional Hospital Corporation was asked to pay for this separate facility out of scarce financial resources. We now have a local hospital that is fully bilingual capable, yet we are also paying for a separate French only facility which is less than a 3 minute drive away. Does this make sense to anyone financially or otherwise? What we now have is segregation instead of bilingualism, a concept that South Africa fought for years to eliminate, only ours is based on the spoken langauge instead of the colour of one's skin. As someone else said and I agree with them, multiculturalism is definitely a failed concept, and we need to get back to common sense. Segregation is just wrong if you expect a society to function without conflict, and to do that all citizens need to be treated the same. -
It just goes to show how useless the U.N. really is! They have been playing that age old game with North Korea, Iraq, Iran for years. You know the one, Cross this line and......you'll be sorry. they cross the line so the line gets moved, and out goes another warning, Cross this line, and .......... It's just like a child when they are testing thier limits. Unfortunately the U.N. has shown itself to be an absolutely useless in reigning in rogue nations. They are so afraid of being politically incorrect and afraid of teh possiblility of offending one of there straw dictators. If this is the example of what the U.N. has come to then George W. Bush is right, it has become redundant and should be disbanded. I know for sure that Canada should not only cease being a member of the U.N. but we should also stop funnelling our foreign aid through the U.N. and the World Bank, for several reason the most prominent reason is that Canada is not getting any credit on the ground for the donations we are making, and neither of these organizations are accountable for where the money is being spent, and they are not obliged to provide any accountability for those funds. Who knows maybe Canada's money was used to purchase the Mercedes, Koffi's son purchased and smashed up.

Unfortunately the only thing the Irving's care about is profits. They could care less that their record of polluting the air-shed in Saint John is very poor. Every time they exceed the limits, all the people of Saint John gets is a weak apology and a promise not to let it happen again, at least not until the next time, which usually isn't too long in coming. Jim Irving scammed the Mayor and Council, as well as the Province of NB led by Bernard Lord, by telling these fools that if they didn't approve a demanded tax deal for their yet to be built LNG Terminal they would go elsewhere. Mayor Norm and his roving band of idiots passed the motion even though the item wasn't even on the meeting's agenda, by telling Council that the deal had to be passed by midnight or else the sky would fall. Next came Fowlie, former Minister of Environment and Local Government who told those who were opposed to any tax deal that it would be months before it could even be dealt with by the provincial government, yet the required legislation was passed within two weeks, virtually without debate, because Bernard Lord made sure every MLA was in the House to vote in favour of the legislation. This shows how little she knew about the corporate power the Irving's wield over both the Provincial politicians as well as their Municipal counterparts. The Assessment Branch of the Provincial government estimated that the property taxes due on this LNG property would have been between $5.5 and 6 Million per year, but because of this special deal the property tax has been locked in at $500,000.00 per year for the next 25 years, and this amount is not adjusted for inflation. Immediately after this announcement City officials started talking about the necessity to either raise taxes or reduce services due to budgetary short falls. Now I ask you, are those involved in approving this deal playing with a full deck? I can envision the same type of demands coming from the Irving's when looking for approval of this project for a new refinery. Not only will the citizens of Metropolitan Saint John be stuck with the pollution, but they will also be stuck with the crumbling infrastructure, while Irving runs to the bank in Bermuda to deposit their obscene profits. This company simply does not like to pay their fair share in taxes. Sure Saint John could use the jobs, but not at any cost. I have heard Irving employees referred to as being owned, and I don't think that's too far off the mark. This was an entirely different corporation and family when K.C. himself was still alive. I remember hearing stories about his generosity from a couple of friend's who lived in an Anglican run Home for Boys, next to his mansion of Mt. Pleasant Avenue.

I read the article. It's not calling for an abolishment of an age of consent law. It talks about how such a law should be examined in the context of societal differences between sexual orientations. I fail to see why EGALE has any problem with reaising the age of consent from 14 years to sixteen years. This change is meant to stop adults 19 year olds from taking advantage of a 14 or 15 year old child. I don't see what any person 19 years plus would find sexually attractive about a 14 or 15 year old child. Yes some may in fact look rather mature physically, but I am willing to bet that if you talk to most 14 and 15 years old, you will rather quickly discover that they are not savvy individuals nor are they mentally capable nor ready to make a decision that could chage their lives forever, IE: STD's AIDS/HIV, or pregnancy. I am sick to death of walking through the mall in the middle of the day and seeing very young girls pushing a baby stroller, and usually they are not walking alone, thery are usually in the company of other very young mothers pushing their own strollers. Sine they are walking around in the middle of the day it means that they have already made the terrible decision to drop out of school. What kind of life are they going to provide to those children when they are not capable themselves to get or hold a decent job. Most are setting that child up for a roller-coaster ride on the welfare system. If EGALE doe object to raising the age of concent, I would have to question just what motivates that mindset. Do they even want to give the impression that they would like to option to explore the vulnerability of a child?

On guns, Mr. PM, try Down Under
mcqueen625 replied to margrace's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Australia has confiscated guns without compensation since that law came in, and that is something both the Liberal government was headed for and was advocated by the United Nations. Home invasions in Australia have sky rocketed in Australia as a result of this gun policy, and now the only people by law allowed to have guns are the police and military. The reality is something else again, that reality is that the people who have the guns now are the police, the military and the criminals. Smooth move Howard! -
We the taxpayers in NB have been asking that for years. We have also been asking, why it is that MLA's can qualify for a fully indexed pansion after serving for a measley 8 consecutive sessions in office. This means that one former Cabinet Minister, Trevor Holder upon being sworn into office on October 4th, qualifies for this pension at 34 years of age. The only jobs this man has ever held in his life since graduation from university is an 18 month stint as an investment advisor. This is hardly someone I would say has any life-skills or experience. All he has to do is skate along as a governmetn hanger-on or practice his hobbies until he can start drawing on that golden parachute. If politicians qualify for anything I think it should be in allowing them to contribute to an RRSP with equal contributions from government coffers while they are in office. Once they leave office either willing or by defeat at the polls, they take both portions with them to transfer into a locked-in RRSP until they reach the age of 65 years of age. In that way, once the politician leaves office the taxpayers will no longer be obligated in any way financially to these former politicians for the rest of their miserable lives as we now are obligated.

Seems like a pretty plausible scenario. I really don't want another election, but I feel Harper is doing a great job considering the lying, corruption, and arrogance we have experienced for tha past 12 years for the Liberals. Relationshipships with the U.S. under the Liberal's had reached all-time lows, which isn't the smartest thing to do considering they are our largest trading partner. What I don't want to happen is for the Bloc to be in a position to virtually blackmail the government of Stephen Harper into handing over huge percentages of any surpluses to a Province with representatives who's sole reason for being is the destruction of Canada. If anything the Feds should give them only their share and cancel any side deals that were made by teh Liberals with the Bloc. or the Province of Quebec, unyil such time as they get the message, "They are not special and deserve no more and no less than the rest of the partners in Canada.

Tie Domi and Belinda Stronach.
mcqueen625 replied to Ricki Bobbi's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Since when did Bimbo Belinda gain any credibility in Canada? She is nothing but a spoiled brat who's father failed to buy her the leadership of the Conservative Party of Canada so she prostituted herself to Paul Martin for a Cabinet position. This braod is all about gaining power, and she is not above doing anything to accomplish her goals. Unfortunately this time she lowered herself even more by crawling into bed with a married man, and helping to finish off a long marriage. She has absolutely no morals or values and I fail to see what quality the voters in her riding saw in her as a Member of Parliament, unless of course Ontario thought as they usually do that the Lying, corrupt Liberals would again form the government and this bimbo would get an even more important Cabinet post. Well the lying Liberals did not form the government and now Belinda has absolutely no influence whatsoever for her constituents. -
Harper Impresses at the Francophonie Summit Bucharest
mcqueen625 replied to sharkman's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I think Harper is doing an excellent job as PM, however I do have to question why Canada is attending the Franco-phoney in the first place, since Canada is for the most part NOT a French speaking nation. Less than 17% of Canadian's speak French,a nd that percentage has remained virtually unchanged since the introduction of Bilingualism more than 40 years ago. With Stephen Harper is Bernard Lord FORMER Premier of New Bruwnswick HOORAY! HOORAY!, and why is he there? New Brunswick is Officially Bilingual in declaration only, the truth is that only a small percentage of NBer's speak French, and their much touted program of French Immersion that was supposed to put English and French students on a level playing field when competing for bilingual jobs upon graduation, has also proved by design to be an utter failure. Former Education Minister under Bernard Lord, Elvy Robichaud, himself and Acadian was quoted in the Telegraph Journal; "The French Immersion program in New Brunswick was not designed nor expected to produce fluently bilingual graduates." Since the many jobs which are advertised as bilingual require fluency, the vast majority of those taking French Immersion education fall far short of the fluency level requirement in the job advertisements. What we need is for Canadian and New Brunswick politicians to spend time solving the woes of their own citizens instead of tarvelling every year to far off land pretending that Canad is a French speaking nation. -
A foundational debate on Immigration
mcqueen625 replied to Figleaf's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I think immigration is both desirable and should be encouraged, but I believe that we have gone about it all wrong. What I believe we have done entirely wrong is to encourage these immigrants to change the way we as cradle-Canadians have been brought up. It's fine for them to have their own cultures as do most of us, but it is wrong for them to axpect us to change our western society to accomidate their traditions and cultures. Where we have also screwed up is in allowing these supposed immigrants to carry duel citizenship. My opinion is that they either want to be Canadians or they want to retain the citizenship from whence they came. This was made glowingly apparent during the recent hostilities in Lebanon, when thousands of these supposed Canadian citizens were taking our government to task for not rescuing them right away, at taxpayer's expense. To make matter even worse I read on teh Cnadian Free Press where a very large percentage wnet directly back to Lebanon as soon as the hostilities died down. They either want to be citizens of Canada or they don't. Being a Canadian citizens means they should be declaring income in Canada from ALL sources and paying Canadian taxes on that income, and most of all they should be either living in Canada or surrendering their Canadian citizenship and going the hell back to where they came from, for good. We the taxpayers of Canada are the ones who will be footing the bill for emergency evacuations from Lebanon, and other hot-spots, and why should we pay for people who obviously only want a Canadian passport for convenience purposes. Maybe it is time we change the law on immigration and require every citizen to participate in all Canadian traditions including filing a T-1 General every year and claiming income from ALL sources, both domestic and foreign, and paying the required percentage of taxes on that income. If they are not willing to fulfill that little obligation, then maybe it is time to stamp their Canadian Passport with a CANCELLED stamp, and ship them all back where they came from. -
New Brunswick might be officiall bilingual but the truth is that less than 17% of the population speaks French. Let's be truthful here they are not even using the term bilingual anymore. The term now is duality, which is something entirely different. It means that we now have a province practicing segregation based on language. We have three entirely set-ups for education, English, French, and French Immersion, with the third option "not designed nor expected to produce fluently bilingual graduates", according to former Education Minister, Elvy Robichaud.

If it's close, she could be a spoiler. I just don't know how people are feeling in New Brunswick. Lord has really picked up the province out of the gutter, it's hard to turn your back on a man that's done so much. That being said, this gas price fixing is a serious issue that will scare away some of his base. Lord picked us out of the gutter?? It's quite obvious that you don't live in New Brunswick, ebcause thigs here are definitely not rosy. Bernard Lord's idea of diversifying the economy of a community is to open a call centre. These operations for the most part are nothing but modern day sweat shops, who pay next t5o minimum wage and lousy working conditions, where the supervisory staff are allowed to verbally abuse or fire people just because they don't meet some determined quota which seems to change all the time. Hospitals in many communities ahve either been closed entirely, or have been turned into community first aid posts. Young people, both English and French are packing up and leaving the province in droves, and the Premier had the nerve to brag that the unemployment rate has gone down. That rate decline has more to do with the many people who ahve left and not an actual improvemnet in employment rates. Hooray! Hooray! Bernie went down to defeat. Sure he won his riding in Moncton, but that has more to do with the fact that for the last 7 years the money tap has been turned up full for Moncton, while the rest of the province does without.
