This site is discussing Marijuana, not alcohol. Everytime someone comes out against pot, the pot-heads drag out their old standby argument about the bad affects of alcohol, when the two have nothing to do with each other. the discussion is about a scientific study done by Greek researchers on the effects on individuals who use pot.

Uh, is Maude Barlow's Council of Canadians a "trusted" website? I said it all along that trade agreements are meant to benefit multinational corporations and their shareholders, not ordinary Canadians. The longer we keep ourselves signed onto these agreements the less relavant our elected governments are, as they are being upsurped by the corporate agenda of the multinationals. I read a book a few years ago written by Paul Helyer for Finance Minister under Pierre Trudeau and in that book he warned readers of exactly what is happening right now by the signing of Free-Trade agreements. The book is called; "The Evil Empire." In that book he says that no social program in Canada is safe due to provisions in these deals, that virtually allows these multinational corporations to effectively rule our country without ever being elected to do so by the people of Canada. In effect we have signed away our sovereignty with the signing of these deals.

Wow.... Is this going too far?
mcqueen625 replied to Shakeyhands's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Day job? Call me old-fashioned but it seems to me that if a person accepts to work for the civil service, and the duty to undertake the public's business, and exercice all the authority and perks that provides, then one gives up the right to express personal opinions in public. I would not want to face a tax collector, a policeman or a judge who had written an article opposing Internet forums and the people who post to them. When we deal with government bureaucrats, we should expect impartiality. If this guy wants to write controversial novels, he should resign and find another day job. Here! Here! This person does in fact work for the government and writing a novel, fiction or otherwise depicting Canada at war with the United States over global warming is just asinine, because Canada does not have, nor will it ever again have the means or the ability to wage a war against any country let alone the U.S. For starters we have many who are already questioning our commitment in Afghanistan because a few of our brave military personnel have been killed. Wait til you hear the hollering when more body-bags start coming back to Canada, the NDP will be lobbying for Canada to get out of the business of having any armed services The Liberal's well they're something else again, because they have shown since the end of WW II that they do not believe Canada needs to spend money on anything military. They would much rather waste our tax-money on useless programs like the gun registry, and allow the U.S. to protect us. -
Stronach Won't Run for Liberal Leadership
mcqueen625 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
You said in one sentence that Graham sucked as Defense Minister (he cheaped out the military) and a couple of sentences later you say if he became leader you might vote for him?? That sure sounds to me like you are willing to vote for an incompetent individual as Prime Minister, and it seems to me that is all we have had in the last 20 years or so, incompetants, including Ly'in Brian Mulroney. I want to see what Harper will do before we send the corrupt Liberal Party back to the troth. So far I like Stephen's initiatives. It will be interesting to see the Liberal's try to run on a pledge to save the GST, when it was Chretien who pledged to scrap the GST during his first mandate. I also agree with Stephen with regards to giving each parent $1,200.00 for each child to assist paying for daycare. I certainly do not want government in the daycare business, and I do not believe that taxpayer's should be asked to pay for daycare, so some yuppy mom or dad can both work. If they want to have children, let them pay for their own daycare, or better yet, stay home and bring up their own children instead of letting strangers at the local daycare centre do it for them, which is what my wife and I did when our children were very young. The more government gets involved in people's lives, the more they are going to need in tax-revenue. Thank you very much, but I fell Canadian are over-taxed as it is. -
At least they have the courage of their convictions and will not allow a heavy-handed government to tell them what to do a, as we do here in Canada. In this country some people want government to look after them from birth to the grave, and the clamoring by people like Jack Layton and the Liberals for a National Daycare Program is a perfect example. What ever happened to parents looking after their own offspring? When my children were growing up nobody was willing to pay for their daycare, therefore my wife and I decided that she would be a stay-at-home-mom at least until the children were in school.

What do you mean "must" get high? I don't know anyone addicted to marijuana. I know plenty of people addicted to alcohol, and yes, they have to get drunk. A person comes home from work, drinks a glass of scotch to take the edge off the day. A person comes home from work, smokes a joint to take the edge off the day. Please explain the difference. I certainly know people who are addicted to Marijuana, and one of them is my brother-in-law. He will tell you himself that he has to toke in order to get through a day. When he gets up in the morning, one of the first things he does is roll a joint. His next chore is to roll a few more dubbies to take to work with him, and to smoke on the way to and from the job-site. So yes some people are addicted to the drug whether that addiction is just psycological or physical I'm not sure but I would suggest from watching my Brother-in-law I would say it is both.

Marijuana and alcohol are two different drugs that have different effects on the human nervous system. The only difference is getting typsy from alcohol is social accetable but getting stoned is not. There is no medical rational for saying being drunk is better than being stoned.Futhermore, the medical studies that show alcohol is 'good' for you are so full of caveats and exclusions that they are virtually meaningless. Marijuana, on the other hand, has a number of well documented medical uses for people with certain diseases. A person can go out for an evening and have a couple of drinks socially, and not be impaired, while the only way one knows they've had enough Marijuana is when they are stoned. That is the only purpose for smoking the stuff.

At least with this gag order we are not constantly subjected to the liberal media who spent a great deal of time portraying the Conservatives as boogeymen, and as a Party that would destroy Canada, our traditions and values. I think the Liberal's a;ready did a fine job of destroying Canadian traditions and values to the point that having Liberal values and morals meant having no values and morals at all.

I don't know about you but I live within a 2 hour drive of the Canada/US border and periodically take a drive to buy some reasonably priced gas, milk or poultry, as well as other grocery items not either available in Canada or at a prohibitive price. I have absolutely no problem with applying for an approved identy card with bio-markers to prove identity. In fact I would prefer that to the cumbersome and expensive procedure to obtain a passport. I wouldn't even have a problem if they wanted to use the driver's license for such a purpose or implanted chips. Those that do have a problem must be either extremely parinoid or they have something to hide.

OK fine, play it that way. That is something I EXPECT from the right. An elected government. Weather you like it or not, the Palestinians voted Hamas in. Now you have to deal with it. Diplomaticly. Seems like Israel will push the Palestinians to the sea before that happens. I mean with all that support from the US. And considering the sizes of both countries at the start of the century to what they are now dot dot dot. . . idealist 'Remember, a man with a full belly and secure domicile is much less likely to strap explosives to himself and blow him up at some soon to be forgoten checkpoint then a starving man' I very much like this statement. Good for Canada. For starters Israe; has just as much right to that land as the Palestinians since both ethnic cultures originated in the Middle East. What give Palestinians the right to decide that Israel has no right to exist. As an article I read in CFP pointed out, Hamas would be stupid to persist in their mandatte to eradicate all Jewish people and the State of Israel because if another Hamas suicide bomber light's himself up and kills more Israelis it will no longer be just a suicide bomber, it wil be an official declaration of war on Israel by the Palistinian people and Isreal will have every right to protect themself with lethel force. The article speculates that if Israel unleashes a full offensive against Palistine and their allies the fight will be over in very few hours with the devastation of Palenstine and her people.

Hammas is officialy IN, and aid is officially OUT. So now what? I thought we were commited to peace. Even a democraticly elected Palestinian Government should be recognized right? Question, who recognizes Palestine's right to exist? So I say, to be fair, we cut aid to Isreal (if we do send them aid) Only to be fair. This is for sure showing some bias on the Canadian Government. The only other country to cut aid to Palestine is Israel. I am guessing they do not recognize their right to exist. And Israel has stated they will define their borders with or without Palestine's help. I think this was a hastey reaction to the situation and overall does not help anything. Wondering how you all think/feel of this situation. Hamas has been listed as a terrorist organization by most countries in the world including the E.U. The issue of restoring aid is in Hamas' hands since all they have to do is renounce violence, agree to the signed peace initiatives, and admit to the concept that Israel has the right to exist in peace. THe ball is in Hamas' court!

SORRY, MR PRIME MINISTER, AFGHANISTAN IS NOT OUR WAR
mcqueen625 replied to CHUCKMAN's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Don't attempt to lay this off on Stephen Harper and the Conservatives since it was Chretien who sent our troops there under as part of a NATO expeditionary force, and it was Martin who sent even more soldiers there. I might add under-equipped, and dressed in "Olive Drab" to a desert location. Nothing like making our boys a target. Let's also not forget the fact that we had to hire a foreign transport aircraft to get this inappropriate equipment to Afghanistan. Stephen Harper did what neither Chretien or Martin had the balls to do, and that was to visit with the troops where they live and fight. That was the right thing to do, because above all else these soldiers are risking their lives to help improve the lot of the Afghan people, especialy the women and children who upon the establishment of a Taliban government immediately reelegated females to mere property with no right to made decision nor to receive an education. I think that ideal is worth sending troops to re-establish. Not only was the visit the right thing to do for the stated reasons but it also shows our troops that we support their efforts. -
The Cancer Called Multi-Culturalism
mcqueen625 replied to betsy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I wouldn't put too much stock in a man who believed in Eugenics and race suicide theory. link So did Tommy Douglas. Whenever someone wants a reasonable discussion of multicult., the race baiting liberals strike again ! Most Canadians abhor racial discrimination, but Official multicult. does just that; it divides people into different tribes, each with their own hearth. While we should recognize individual rights we need not recognize group rights. While we all should be tolerant and respectful of other beliefs, any Country needs universally shared values and norms to bind it together, without that, there isn't a Country. Today, multicult. in Canada (and in Europe) is challenging 'liberal norms', dividing countries and descending into violence. Promoting official multicult. only promotes division and racial divides, and encourages some groups to believe that they can impose their will on the host country. Here! Here! That was happening in France and England with some Muslim clerics demanding the adoption of both Muslim traditions and laws, especially as it deals with family law. I read an article on the Canadian Free Press addressing this very subject and they suggested that this type of thing cannot happen in the United States because they have a melting-pot type system of immigration in that people who immigrate to the U.S. are expected to conform with mainstream U.S. society, because their society is NOT going to conform to their's. -

I'm really not interested in boring Canadian history! I hated it when I was in school and wondered when we were taking it what the reason was. It was total crap and boring! On the other hand I see no reason why even some people born here feel the need to hypenate or qualify their Canadianism. Lately the French seem to feel that they have to stress the fact that they are French. What is it are they insecure? -

Who rules and owns Canada then? Canadians. They may be a mix of Arab-Canadians, Indo-Canadians, Chinese-Canadians, French-Canadians, Euro-Canadians; etc.; but they will be Canadian. Unless we are aboriginal, we all descend from immigrants. I think you are sadly mistaken if you think that Canadian's will be ruling Canada, and your remarks show that already. As long as we allow or encourage Canadians to hyphenate or otherwise qualify their Canadianism based on their eithnic culture Canada will never be harmonious. We should be just calling ourselves Canadian and never mind the hyphenated terms like French Canadian, Indo-Canadian, Chinese-Canadian, etc. Ever notice how most Canadians born in Canada or in the U.K. refer to ourselves as simply Canadian, while those from other ethnic backgrounds tend to hypenate themselves, and in many cases expect some kind of special treatment because of their minority status. If we are going to live in harmony we will all need to drop thew qualifications and just be Canadian. -
' Possible but that would go against the policy of not dealing with kidnappers and make every expat in Iraq even more of a target. Could be that they just wanted to get rid of them and let the word get out where they could be found. They have been getting a lot of flack from other Arabs about these kidnappings and perhaps they came to realize it was a no win situation. They are free and unharmed, that's what really counts. Too bad Fox wasn't with them. I don't think the Americans would have let his killers get away if they could help it. If Luney is so proud of his sexual preferences why is it that he was not waving his EGALE flag when he was a hostage of the Iraqis? His type are so eager to flaunt their sexuality here in Canadaa, why not in Iraq, and in other parts of the Middle East? Could beheading have srossed his mind?

Who are you talking about? Those people that used to scan and beep as you choose to call it are not helping serve peole in the aisles, they no longer have jobs, period. This self-serve solution is about only one thing, and that is eliminating employees, and thus increasing the bottom line. I for one refuse to use these devices because my wife happens to work retail as a Head Cashier/Front-End Manager in a grocery store, and if our particular Co-op was to install these self-service modules, those girls and boys who rely on that part-time employment as a way to pay their educational costs would no longer have that money coming in. The store would just eliminate those positions and employ only those who now stock shelves. Don't kid yourself, none of tese stores will shift those employees to another part of the store, they will simply lay them of, but if you are naive enough to believe this corporate B.S. of how much they care about their employees, you go right ahead. Those of us that are more enlightened know better.

You are only hearing about this now? Proselytizing and converting have carried the death penalty in many countries. Or is it only news now that there is a 'bash Islam' bandwagon on which to hang this headline? By the way, I wouldn't quote newspapers from Salt Lake City too much...(Mormonism is one of the kookier religions out there) Mormanism and Scientology are two things but Islam's goal is to spread their brand of fanatism across the whole world, to the exclusion of all other religions or beliefs. They preach death to all infidels as they choose to call anyone who does not believe in their stupid prophet. I for one believe in one God and his son Jesus Christ, and I could care less about Islam and their moronic fanatism. These nutcase will not be happy until all governments cower to their wishes. I think that Christianity is worth fighting and dying for, but I'm not about to strap a bomb to myself and walk into a crowd of innocent cililians as would a fanatical islamic.

All I know is that I do not want more government involvement into the lives of Canadians. Universal childcare has the potential to create another huge bureaucracy which will cost the taxpayers of this country even moer of what little disposable income they have left after government syphions it for many of their other hair-brained schemes. If we listen to Jack Layton he has this mindset that the government should be in control of every aspect of Canadian's lives from birth to death. I say enough is enough! If couples want to bring children into this world as my wife and I did, then damnit pay for your own daycare, or better yet make a choice of either having children or a career. No wonder many of our children today have no values or morals, they are being brought up by strangers at the daycare centre. Mom and Dad see the children in the morning up until they drop them off at the daycare centre and don't have to bothered with them again until they pick them up after work, then they break their necks getting the child home, fed, bathed and put to bed for the night. The short time they spend with thier children is like spending time with a stranger. Come on people, bring up yoour own children or at least don't expect the taxpayer's of this country to pay for your selfish choices by subsidizing daycare spaces. You can do without that second SUV, that expensive home in the suburbs, or that yearly vacation in the tropics while someone else minds yur children.

I would much rather have the U.S. as a neighbour than China, North Korea or for that matter the United Nations, as I am not quite sure just who they support. I have my doubts ever since the Oil for Food scam attributed to the U.N., France, Russia, Austria, Koffi Annan's son and Maurice Strong, and let's not forget the money Suddam invested in a company partailly owned by Paul Martin and family, money I might add that came illegally from the oil-for-food program.

Here! Here! The Liberals started us down this path with repeated cuts to transfer payments and now we find ourselves between a rock and a hard place. We have always allowed a certain amount of private involvement in our healthcare system, and that is not about to change any time soon. What we need now is for the provinces to spend healthcare dollars appropriately on medical professionals instead of dedicating an inappropriate amount on administrative personel. Granted administrative personal need not concentrate on saving people's lives, they are too busy saving dollars to bother with how many people are dying becuase of their decisions.
-
It is the side that wants government to be all things to all Canadians. The real problem is that to do this it costs money, and since most Canadian hollar that we are overtaxed we should maybe ask the people of Canada before we go head over heals in debt to pay for things like universal daycare as invisioned by that flake Jack Layton and his band of nutcases. Canadians want less governement, not more, and to achieve that we need to shed numerous levels of government bureaucracy, and that should ideally start in the Office of the Prime Minister.

Forget All Else: Islamic Law Comes To Canada
mcqueen625 replied to Neal.F.'s topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I totally agree! If immigrant are going to come to Canada it should be only on the condition that they leave their cusoms and traditions behind in their country of birth. We cannot have these immigrants bringing their customs and traditions with them unless of course that custom is the total rejection of homosexual marriages, that I can accept, ebcause Canada was once a country that als rejected this lifestyle choice until Chretien a dn Martin lobbied for a gay and lesbian vote. For security reasons we need to have a justice system that treats everyone the same regardless of their traditional beliefs and customs. Take Mustafa Dadar's deportation for instance, he neds to be sent back where he came from. He beat his former wife because she wanted to become Canadian without bringing with her traditional Iranian traditions of extreme Islam. He tried to have his duaghtert and his wife assume traditional Islamic roles of subservience, and traditional dress, and when his wife Mariam balked he beat her, now he wants the people of Canada to believe that he is a non-violent soul. He needs to be sent packing with his ideals and his strigent beliefs, and maybe his former wife and his latest victim will be able to live in the belief that he is out of their lives forever. -
Each Canadian Worth $137,000 on Average
mcqueen625 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I want know where to apply for the $137,000.00 for both myself and my wife. It will, certainly allow us to pay off the bit we owe and allow us to take a few vacations before we kick off. Now that would be really nice but not realistic since every time we turn around corporations are lining up to raise their rates whenever they hear that seniors have received or are about to receive a cost-of-living raise. $137,000.00 my ass!! -
So those that see it as kind of a waste to keep the monarch around, a relic of a century ago. And... Those, who in my opinion, have a dogmatic respect for a useless figurehead. What are your opinions of having the Queen remain head of state, and maintaining Canada's position in the Commonwealth? Quotes Source: http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=1&cl...42153103104R131 Never mind dogmatic, just think dog when you think of Camilla Parker. Sorry I meant to say horse-face. Now she is certainly not my idea of a queen unless we are referring to one from the nearest female impersonator bar, as she look more male than female. What a poor excuse for a woman, and shame on Charles for tossing over Diana for someone who would make a good husband for someone.
