  1. North Korea's government is pretty stable. If you want to prioritize stability that much then we should do away with elections altogether.
  2. Coal emits more CO2 per kWh than Oil, even oil sands.

I like the old one as well and it disturbs me when countries want to ditch recognizing big parts of their history. On the other hand I can understand why they would want to recognize the Maori culture o their flag.

  3. Well according to Anita Sarkeesian, everything is sexist. And she was at the UN telling people how we need to censor the internet, so she must be right! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SA0aKjY8K50 You can play hockey without ramming people into boards, punching each other in the head, slashing each other, etc. Yet the NHL glorifies it and the penalty for such violence is either non-existent or minor (2 minutes in the penalty box for assault). And the fans in their sick twisted desire for violence encourage such aggression. Look at professional soccer, it is a very similar game and strongly discourages violence. I was assaulted and suffered a concussion. Does that count?
  4. Ojibwe mitochondria DNA may suggest otherwise. Also, the vikings came to North America 1000 years ago.
  5. I think Raif Badawi and Tarek Fatah would classify as liberal muslims. Here are three questions: Do they support freedom of speech, including the depiction of the prophet Mohamed? Do they think that homosexuality should not be criminalized? Do they think that it should be legal to convert away from Islam? If it is no to either of these, they aren't liberal muslims.
  6. More like the kuffar were banned from serving in the military, thus had less options for employment. By this logic the Jews in Nazi Germany were advantaged by the fact that Germany didn't let them serve in the military. The Jizya is not the same thing as Zakat and the amount paid is quite different. For low income people, Jizya is generally more than Zakat, not to mention that Muslims with an income below the Nisab level do not have to pay Zakat and can even benefit from Zakat. There were some historical cases where Jizya was less for very wealthy people than Zakat. However, for the vast majority of people, the Islamic tax system created a strong financial incentive for people to convert to Islam. Northern Iraq, Eastern Syria, Northern Nigeria, Southern Somalia, etc. Even in moderate Malaysia, muslims get a tax rebate for Zakat. Thus in effect an additional tax is levied on Kuffar as they cannot claim this rebate even if they donate to charity.
  7. But are they liberal muslims? I use the word liberal because moderate in the context of Islam can mean many things.
  8. There are differing views, but your sister does not have the majority position. Is she a liberal muslim?
  9. Pretty sure that Zakat can only be given to muslims, not non-muslims. And zakat can be used to fund jihad (didn't prophet Mohamed fund his campaign in Syria using Zakat?). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zakat "Those fighting for a religious cause or a cause of God (Fī Sabīlillāh),[15] or for Jihad in the way of Allah by means of pen, word, or sword,[50] or for Islamic warriors who fight against the unbelievers but are not part of salaried soldiers." ISIS is funded in large part by Zakat. "Islamic scholarship, historically, has taught that only Muslims can be recipients of zakat." I don't see how zakat is for the benefit for society as a whole, at least as long as a significant proportion of humanity is not muslim.
  10. The NHL is a sexist organization that normalizes violence against men and concussions in society. Shame on all of you for supporting such an organization.
  11. Lots of claims. Little evidence to back it up. For the most part they are proportional (neither progressive or regressive). And with exemptions on essentials, they are arguably progressive. Which is what you want... Wow, a bunch of propaganda. That is clearly convincing. *sarcasm*
  12. Saudi Arabia has formed a 34 country coalition to 'fight terrorism'. This is very concerning. Likely it will be used to commit further genocide against Houthis, spread wahhabism and be the basis for a Wahhabist geopolical force for decades.

So euler wants to condemn this effort right from the start. No end to that phobia around his neck of the woods it would seem.

  13. I agree, we should rethink Canada. Abolish the monarchy. Become a republic. Abolish the senate which gives 50x more representation to PEIers as BCers. Abolish the first past the post system and the riding system which gives 20x more representation to PEIers as BCers. Abolish the indian act. Abolish the reserve system. Abolish employment equity. Abolish section 15 subsection 2 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Abolish religious references from the Anthem and the preamble to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Abolish sexist references in the Anthem such as 'in all thy sons command'. Abolish catholic school boards. Make everyone equal under the law. Ah yes, the wonderful organization with countries like Saudi Arabia and North Korea consistently part of the human rights commission and which wants to censor our internet.
  14. The amerindians came from Siberia (mostly around 13000 years ago during the Clovis Migration) and if you go back 100,000 years, all homo sapiens are in Africa.
  15. That's sort of the point. You want them to consume proportionately less and save more. This increases the physical capital stock, which results in greater long term economic output. They might do it as simply a policy that makes sense from the US perspective regardless of Canada. Screw your Keynesian multiplier nonsense. Solow model suggests we should increase consumption taxes. Empirical studies that look at the marginal cost of taxation suggest that consumption has a significantly lower marginal cost of taxation than income or corporate taxes. And your claim is based upon.........
  16. It's not about respecting people's feelings, it's about not alienating liberal muslims. One of the most effective ways to fight against Wahhabism is to have people argue and convince muslims that it is not the correct version of islam.
  17. Learn how to round. Is it even against NAFTA? It depends how you implement the tax.
  18. Maybe go with the trump option, build a wall. Joking aside, I don't think it is that unfeasible. People in the states have been advocating for a consumption tax for nearly a century.
  19. put a tax on cross border shopping, or encourage the americans to also implement a 25% sales tax.
  20. I propose a GST of 25%, inline with countries like Norway and Sweden, in order to increase our savings rate to the level suggested by the golden rule.
  21. Well thank you for clarifying your position, Donald Trump. Because alienating liberal muslims is clearly the most effective way to deal with Wahhabism. *sarcasm* You forget the provinces. Most countries don't have such powerful sub-national units with massive debt. Proportional representation.
  22. link? No they don't. We could have a national CO2 emission tax if there were political will and politicians simply explained: hey a national CO2 emission tax is more efficient. Unfortunately, the FPTP system doesn't allow for much competition, so we are stuck with 3-4 terrible choices with idiotic policies. Really, our current mess is due in large part to Harper. Because Harper refused to implement a national CO2 emission tax, the provinces took it upon themselves to implement CO2 mitigation policy.
  23. No, you aren't thinking neoprogressively enough. It is the fault of corporations, because they are evil and shipped jobs overseas for no good reason. This justifies more taxes on corporations, especially taxes on CO2 emissions, in order to make them pay for shipping jobs overseas. This will inturn cause more corporations to leave Canada, justifying even more taxes!
