Canadas Gravy Train Turns Left
fellowtraveller replied to fellowtraveller's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
Redford election was predictable? By whom? Both Mar and Redford are Red Tories, they are in the same place in the political sprectrum. Mar will leave politics now, too bad since he was a very competent man and a centrist politically. Redford has the same excellent campaign mnanager that got the new mayor in Calgary elected. She also appealed directly to teachers and nurses unions and Liberals, and has already announced payback for the teachers to the tune of $110 million. I know of at least two lifetime Liberal organizers who sold Tory memberships for Redford. Great and effective campaign by Redford. Danielle Smith is not going to do anything significant next election, Stelmach efficiently sawed her and Ted Morton off at the knees last spring. The NDP are going to be forced to get rid of their leader Mason soon, he has gained nothing during his tenure and never will. The new leader of the Liberals is a fool and will have ample opportunity to demonstrate it before an election. Alberta now has a woman as Premier, an Indian born immigrant as Leader of the Opposition, another woman as leader of the Wild Rose Party, a young Muslim son of immigrants as mayor of Calgary, and a Jew as mayor of Edmonton. All in a province completely and entirely ful;l of renecks. Odd that. -
Perimeter security reached

It has been 26 years since the agreement, and 21 since implementation. Do you see the collapse of the Eurozone soon? -
Perimeter security reached
fellowtraveller replied to Topaz's topic in Canada / United States Relations
Europe has numerous common border protocols in numerous countries, all intended to make all member countries more secure. Doing the same thing in North America is long overdue and makes plenty of sense. It also will serve to make trade and travel between the two countries easier and most importantly, more profitable. -
SCC ruling: Insite to stay open
fellowtraveller replied to Black Dog's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Incorrect. The main role of the judiciary is to interpret and apply legislation. Who is threatened by this ruling? Junkies will still be shooting heroin no matter which way the Supremes went. -
Alberta gets a new Premier and not a single thread on the topic? Alison Redford wins Alberta PC Leadership by 1,613 votes By Jason Markusoff, Calgary Herald October 2, 2011 Alison Redford, one of governing Tories' harshest critics from within their ranks, is now their leader, and shortly, Alberta’s first female premier. The final tally put the former justice minister over establishment favourite Gary Mar, 37,104 votes to 35,491. Mar had won on first choices. But with the second choices on the leadership election's preferential ballot , Redford proved to have wider appeal. She won with a pitch that veered sharply more progressive than conservative, heavy on pledges to bolster the public education and health-care systems. "And today, Alberta voted for change," she said to a crowd of flag-waving Tories who waited until Sunday's early hours to hear the verdict announced at the Edmonton Expo Centre. "Change that means that teachers will be returning to classrooms. Change that means there will be better access to health care for all Albertans. But also change that means a disciplined approach to spending priorities, and more funds set aside to assure the future prosperity for our kids." Redford, 46, also admitted she was thinking about her mother, who passed away suddenly days before the long campaign's final vote. My link

Conservatives set to table bill.........
fellowtraveller replied to a topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I suggested nothing of the sort. I stated that coprporations and unions have the same goals based in the same reason: greed. The balance between union and corporation as currently defined is an artifice, when the true balance is supply and demand of the commodity at hand, which is labour. -

You have overlooked thousands of angry, rabid Vancouverites crazed by hockey loss and fuelled with beer. You did know that Vancouver is only half an hour from Blaine, WA? Seattle should be afraid, very afraid. -

Hilarious stuff. In reality, both businesses have the same goal: maximum financial advantage to their shareholders. Oh, of course the unions call their sharholders 'members' All this claptrap that unions spew about workers rights and social conscience is laughable. They exist to generate maximum advantage to their members, period. And unions themselves are an industry. -
SCC ruling: Insite to stay open
fellowtraveller replied to Black Dog's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Nope, because you are intelligent enough to understand that heroin injection has a clear and present danger to your survival in the minutes, day, and months after the injection, whereas nicotine is far more subtle and longterm. You'll have to much better than that in your search for an analogy, cigarettes vs heroin is a dog that just does not hunt. Insite is and should be part of a treatment regime for a health problem, and it neatly helps solve an immediate and unique aspect of that health problem- keeping the patient alive long enough to be treated. A lot of this discussion hinges on a persons opinion as to whether or not they think a)junkies are human beings and human beings worth salvaging. My answer to both is 'yes'. -
My nother also pays about $10/month for electricity living in an apartment. The problem is that she also pays another $45/month in a long list of riders, fees and assorted service charges along with the $10.

SCC ruling: Insite to stay open
fellowtraveller replied to Black Dog's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Nope. What drug injection sites do is give addicts a better chance of being alive long enough to be rehabilitated. If that makes anybody else feel better aboput themselves, bonus! But that fact alone is enough to make Insite worthwhile. You cannot help a dead junkie recover enough to have some semblance of a productive life. Insite can help some of them do just that, simply by staying alive. That is enough for me. -
and this is where you post your hard evidence that the CBC is now a force for national unity. No need to reference anything from 1936 or from the Friends of the CBC website. Cite please.

check that google again and see what proportion of that $10 billlion actually gets to those that need the humanitarian aid.

I confess it would be hard to qualify the 22 pages of this threasd as 'rational'. Same for the megathreads elsewhere here, and elsewhere elsewhere, but that is what passes for debate for Canadians on hot button issues like the CBC.

No, it part of a deliberate camapign to avoid anything remotely like peace and stability in the region, a calculated method of keeping the shit stirred. Every time they get anywhere near a negotiated settlement, bust out the rockets, inflame the orthodox and hardcore minority in Israel, and start over. Hamas has no interest in peace in the region, or more accurately their Iranian masters have no interest. They have no interest, but they do have money and human pawns. And hatred for Jews, plenty of that too.

Warning to Harper: The Unknown Knowns
fellowtraveller replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The only two known knowns that I know are that the Leafs are not winning the Stanley Cup again, and that it is impossible to make any money off that knowledge. -
Yeah, you are a bigot and a hater as well. You seem to hate Christians for some reason and feel the need to express that bigotry regularly here, and note that I am not a Christian. If Harper was a hardcore fundamentalist, would he permit abortion on demand, same sex marriage, fornication outside marriage, homos in the military, birth control, freedom of religion or sexual equality? On the other hand, you worship fire and brimstone Baptist preacher Tommy Douglas, who once authored a thesis that said .Puzzling.

I do not understand the notion that the CBC has any kind of universal benefit in 2011. When it was formed in the Thirties, it was certainly a nation building tool and cutting edge technology which allowed Canadians to be linked for the first time. 'Linked' is probably the wrong word, since there was little interactive about CBC radio than or now. It was a vehicle to inform. That purpose is utterly lost today, and I suggest that increasingly the CBC is an instrument of division for Canadians rather than a tool of national unity. I don't seek to get rid of it, I want the govt to stop paying for the entertainment of a few at the expense of all. If the supporters/viewers/listeners want to spend their own money to do whatever they want, no problem. The switch from publicy funded public radio to privately supported public radio is what happened to the oldest public broadcaster in Canada- CKUA radio- and it has gone on to thrive.
-
Harper has been a supporter of Israel from day one, before during and after every election. he- unlike you- recognizes that they they have a right to exist. The Liberals supported them too. and every time you raise this, you confirm your own bigotry and intolerance.Do you think Harper loves Jesus as much as Tommy Douglas did?

ing passport prices sky rocket!
fellowtraveller replied to William Ashley's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Agreed. This reasoning also applies to other non essential services, such as the entertainment produced by the CBC at massive cost to taxpayers. The difference of course it that passports are available from only one source, while entertainment is available from thousands of sources. Why is it that passports are a break even proposition while CBC is a dead loss? -
Gap between rich and poor rising faster in Canada
fellowtraveller replied to Rick's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Bad example, France is a place of little to no economic hope for youth and minorities. It is a fine place to live if you are white and well off. Two young economic refugees from France had been living with me for the last 3 months, both now have jobs, a car, a place to live and a reasonable chance of a future- all of which were really, really hard to get in France for young people. -
ing passport prices sky rocket!
fellowtraveller replied to William Ashley's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Sure, and if the AG notes that Passport Canada is bloated with overpaid bureaucracy/high costs and should be run like a business to generate profit/provide efficient cost effective service to Canadians- I will accept that finding if it is accompanied by appropriate remedies. Will you? -
To Invoke Or Not To Invoke
fellowtraveller replied to scribblet's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
Sigh. Looks like we'll have to endure this trite bilge for the foresseable future. Peace is better than war Puppies are better than slugs. -
No, I read the summaries you provided and came to the same conclusion I did during the trial and that the court in Bali also did: guilty. Stupid too. I did not realize that her family were on trial, so who gives a rats ass about non-evidence for or against against them? Really, the whole 'summary' on your site is a massive pile of stinking crap that deserves the amount of attention it will get here and elsewhere: none.
