Paul Martin doesn't deserve this...
fellowtraveller replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
But..... The Cons will have to win a majority to have any effect on events in Quebec in the next couple of years. Same for the Libs really. A minority govt, Lib or Con, will be ideal for the Bloc as they really hold the balance of power federally(and really, what a comment on our system of governance is that?). And really, we have no more than a couple of years, or less , to act on Quebec. The BQ and 50% may not matter at all in the next federal election - if it follows a PQ win in the next Quebec provincial election. The Bloc won't run candidates in a federal election in a country called Canada..... -
Harper's Missile Mindlessness Would Waste Billions

Just a few weeks before they publcily reversed themselves on missile defence, didn't Canada agree to changes in the NORAD agreement that specifically allowed Missile Defence? -

And in 12 years, the Liberals have paid down what? $10 billion on a debt of over $500 billion? They have managed to 'create a surplus', but not through any kind of good management. It is more a combo of lower interest rates, overtaxation, and offloading programs to the provinces. River God, do you know the difference between debt and deficit? -

If that's the case, I think accreditation and professional day care is worth it for our children. Neither accreditation or professionalism have anything to do with a solely state provided daycare system. Both are achievable within a system that provides choice by those responsible for the welfare of children. No, Paul Martin is not responsible for my kids. I am. C'mon , admit it. You just love that Big Guvmint. -

Inefficient? Can you just imagine the horrific layers of bureaucracy that will magically appear federally and provincially, never to disappear, with the Liberals day care plan? -
Only Option for Canada's sake

America bad. Bad bad bad. And it isn't the first time they have done this... oh no not even close. Who can forget or forgive the war criminal Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who was complicit in the American invasion of Europe in World War II? America had stayed out of the Teutonic adjustment to European borders until 1941, when it could no longer resist the siren call of Eurpean oilfields and attacked this defenseless continent. FDR conveniently 'died' in office to avoid conviction at Nuremberg for his warcrimes. Let's see is Bush, both of 'em, can dodge justice in our times! -

It can be summed up in one word: shortlived. -
Conservatives true colours start to shine through...
fellowtraveller replied to Rovik's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I'd give them more credit than that, though the real reason is totally crass. They have one agenda, and that is to survive. They know that sooner or later any fiscally responsible government is going to look at the riduclous $1 billion they get annually in subsidies and say: no more. Much more likely to happen with the Tories than the Libs. Well, I'm the source of the info on the presentation of the info by CTV and CBC. Very very different level of emphasis on the same info. Call me a liar if you like, but that is the way it was, as evidenced by the linked story. -
How many current scandals are there?
fellowtraveller replied to willy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Have we forgotten so quickly about Adscam? Lots and lots of money still missing from that one. No politicians going to jail - astonishing really when you consider that we know that politicians both handed it out and received it. What about the random $2 billion unaccounted for at Industry Canada? You can be sure that Indian and Northern Affairs, with about $7 billion per year , all unaudited by the Auditor General is a stroy crying to be told. -
Paul Martin doesn't deserve this...
fellowtraveller replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
It has little to do with Copps, Kinsella or any English/French rift. The reality is that Chretien/Martin have jointly managed to thrown out their power base in Quebec, and with it their hopes of forming a majority. This is the reason, as I've been saying for months, that Martin will be gone within 90 days - win or lose. The Bloc are the main beneficiaries, though in the last couple of weeks a new wrinkle has come up. Surely the most disturbing poll number of all for the Liberals , in the longer term, is the bump in support for the CPC in Quebec. If you are a federalist, it is the only encouraging crumb of data that has appeared in a very long time. And what does this mean?: like the old saying goes: you reap what you sow. Nobdoy has victimzed Martin or the Liberals, they are getting far less than they deserve and much later. For the sake of Canada, I hope it is not too late. -

From the link: This one line and one line only is yet another illustration of why the CBC is a national disgrace. I watched both CBC and CTV coverage of this last night. The CTV correctly noted that the Tories had not yet announced their full strategy, and this info would be integrated into a fuller package. The CBC made it their co-lead story, and glossed over the Kenny remarks that : we have much more to come. Stand by. -

Scary Tactics Plan B: Belinda!
fellowtraveller replied to betsy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Anee McLellans CPC opponent is Laurie Hawn, the same guy who lost to her last time, in 2004. I think he is an odd choice again, since he is not really well known in Edmonton. I thought the party would pick somebody better known, somebody with name recognition to slay the mighty Anne. -
Quite possible that the CPC is seen as an alternative to the Liberals in Quebec in a few ridings - but not as an alternative to the Bloc. I don';t see the Liberals holding their ground at all in Quebec, and frankly don't see the Cons winning any seats. They may up their popular vote into double digits this time....

How can the Liberals turn things around?

scary scary always works. They'll still get a minority -
Majority English provinces
fellowtraveller replied to Leafless's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
Relax. None of this will matter nearly so much when Quebec departs next year. I'm planning on taking advantage of the vast marketing /advertising opportunties that will occur then. Think of all that blank space available on every consumer product and label as the ROC goes unilingual English...... -
Harper... Hate or Love?
fellowtraveller replied to SamStranger's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Bubber, that's what happens when you live down with the Devil. The NDP has been assimilated into the Liberal Party. -
I'd put the Bloc at more like 62-65 seats. It's going to be a bloodbath in Quebec.

Is gang rape a part of Islamic culture?

Land claims are based on simple contract law, between the Crown and groups of people across Canada. Treaties, ya know?\ Well, didn't the government do just that with hundreds of thousands of white Europeans, not so long ago? It was called homesteading. -
What happened to our money?
fellowtraveller replied to fellowtraveller's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Well, no, that is not true. Mr. Martin has admitted that at least $1.14 ended up illegally in Liberal coffers, offered to return it, and hope that is the end of it. Those 'coffers' apparently included Liberal MPs in Quebec receiving cash money from Liberal bagmen. Mr. Cote did not answer the question of 'who received the money' though he said he knows, and Gomerys mandate does not allow him to force Cote to answer. Paul Martin has refused to answer this question, which is not an unreasonable one. So lets talk about the $1.14 million, and ignore the megabucks unaccounted for otherwise. How did Martin come up with this number, $1.14 million as money stolen and being returned? Isn't it illegal for any politician to recieve unreipted bags of cash from 'strangers'? Since when did the sole penalty for criminal activity - return of the money - be decided by and acted upon by the perpetrator? Why has there been no criminal investigation into the activities of the Liberal Party of Quebec, all their financial records seized and a forensic audit done on same? Just curious. And finally - have the Liberals actually paid the $1.14 million to the Receiver General of Canada, or is the stolen money financing yet another Liberal election campaign? -

All of them do it now. Edmontons transplant center treats people from all over. There used to be a liver transplant place in London that did the same, don't know if it is still there. It is based on need and suitability, not so much where you're from, though your ability to survive the journey is a factor. -

Point of Order: much of the pot grown today has no dirt and little in the way of roots - it is grown hydroponically. It's not like freerange chicken..... And the proportion of big fat buds to other, non profitable material is very high...the wonders of modern science..... -
43% of Albertan's and 36% of the West
fellowtraveller replied to rbacon's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
Is this satire or simply complete jingoistic crap? Two referendums were held when Albertas oil was not an issue, and prices were low. Blame Alberta Alberta earned $13 billion in resource revenue in 2004 , and gave $11 billion of it gratis to Canada. Blame Alberta. The US dollar plummets in relation to every major currency. Blame Alberta. World oil prices soar, helping to make Ontario industry uncompetitive. Blame Alberta. Nobody wants to buy Ontario made Buicks. Blame Alberta. -
If Harper forms a minority government...
fellowtraveller replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The important election will be the fight in Quebec in 2007. It will be the last chance to keep Quebec in Canada. The current federal election is important only in that another minority, of any kind, will aid the Bloc and PQ immeasureably. As for Martin: he is gone within 90 days, win or lose.
