  1. Speaking of paper, this is related to a reason why I find Dr Suzuki to be personally less than credible at times. Last year, I heard him (on CBC radio of course) shilling for his recently released book - printed on a very large amount of paper of course, and his promo tour involved jetting all over North America in aircraft burning obscene amounts of jet fuel. I could understand his actions if he was promoting the science of conservation, or even a laymans primer on the evils of climate change. But no.... the book he was promoting was Volume 2 of his memoirs. Yep, Volume 2. Ladies and gentlemen, if you can't walk the wlalk, this is one set of ears that won't be tuning in when you talk the talk. Sheer vanity.
  2. OP, I encourage both you and Mr Dion to stick to this course of non-action.
  3. Note that the taxpayers have already paid for the road, both capital and ongoing maintenance charges. Please don't make stupid and pointless comparisons like that of the hotel room, you're better than that.
  4. Vancouver or any team only gets home ice advanatge for the first series, after that home ice goes to the team with the most points. And there has to be some reward for winning your divsion, which Vancouver did. There also has to be a reward for finishing first overall in the Conference, and Detroit is enjoying that now. Actually Buffalo is really reaping that reward, with two relatively weak opponents in Islanders and Rangers.
  5. I just returned from the UK. Anybody who believes a congestion or road tax would reduce any other taxes, or affect the volume of traffic, is also a believer in Tinkerbelle. And it should be called a road tax, since central London already has a huge congestion charge - about $20 per day for the privilege of driving into the city. The system works so well (not in reducing traffic, but in creating revenue) that the area affected by the congestion charge has just been doubled. Public transist, always revered here, is actually very expensive in London. A single one way fare on the Tube is about $10. Train fares between cities is shockingly expensive too. The UK is a vast sprawl of suburbia, with poor or nonexistent transit between towns. Solve that, and you'll solve the car problem. Typical cost of owning a car in suburban London: parking in your own neighbourhood: about 5 pounds per day. congestion charge to drive to the city: 8 pounds per day. parking in the city: at least 10 pounds per day. Total daily cost of commuting: 23 pounds or about $55 per day and that does not include the cost of fuel, taxes, insurance, registration, maintenance, or the actual cost to buy or lease the car itself. Like everything else in rip-off Britain- getting around is very costly.
  6. Anybody else noticed how extremely brutal the picture quality of the CBC game feeds are? The rinks look dark and the pictures are fuzzy. No problem with TSN, but CBC looks terrible. The Dallas-Vancouver series is unwatchable. I hate that kind of hockey, dulldullldull. The worst thing is that one of these teams will move on and inflict more of the same on us.
  7. After Quebec, is there a province with worse fiscal management than Manitoba? Something like 20% of revenues derived from equalization payments, in a province with plenty of energy, agriculture and well educated people. I guess there is a reason so many of the best educated and most skilled workers, educated at public expense, have moved on to greener pastures further West. Alberta and BC say 'thank you Manitoba'.
  8. Forget about Jay Hill, Taliban Jack Layton, Dion , Harper, Bush, polls, NATO and all the rest of the silly, diabolical crap that confuses our will and aids an enemy. Focus instead on the Afghani people if you want an indisputable litmus test of how they fell about what is going on in their country. And here is the single fact to keep first and foremost in your head, the fact that justifies what we have done and hope to do in Afghanistan: Over two million Afghan refugees have voluntarily returned to the country since NATO invaded in late 2001. Two Million Plus voted with their feet. They didn't read Hansard or the New York Times, they packed up again and returned to their homes because they were less afraid. Some had been gone a generation. They have stayed, they have not fled back to Iran or Pakistan.
  9. No, they are no such thing. People with average incomes and regular lives can still afford homes in both cities. Prices are still less than those in Vancouver and Toronto. Alberta still leads the nation in disposable income.
  10. Go ahead, propose whatever you like for citizens who own guns., and I'll ignore it if it makes no sense. I have no intention now or ever of registering myself or any guns I may own, whch consists of long guns and shotguns.. They are my private properrty, and are stored securely as I would store any device or substance that is potentially dangerous. I keep gasoline, propane and chemicals in a shed where they are unlikely to harm my family or others. I keep sharp objects out of the reach of toddlers. Guns are stored where it will take some considerable effort and determination to find or steal them. They will not be used for any crime, or to threaten or harm any individual. Because they are my private property, I do not need to justify my ownership to anybody , for any reason. I know numerous other people in the same situation, that are simply choosing to ignore the whole thing. I know one person who buys ammunition for all her hunting friends, about 25 of them. She isn't the only one by any means.
  11. OP, did you know that your CAPS key is sticking sometimes?
  12. What are you talking about sunshine? The Post did not address the truth or fiction of global warming in any way. They apologized for mispresenting the Doctors position, they did not present any position of their own. Seems to me to be acting responsibly by publishing the retraction.
  13. I don't know the reason either. But it is hard to imagine that the Bloc caucus is a very cheery place these days. They have gone from the heady days when they were hammering away on a vulnerable PM Martin, things going well with the PQ and a new leader and a PQ majority in sight , Hrper being a non entity in Quebec, adscam providing a boost... to this state of affairs...
  14. Joe Calrk was never an Albertan, he was born and will die a simpering weiner filled with mush, one of the worst PMs ever. he got nothing done in his short tenure. Actually, that might not be such such a bad thing. No, I'd have to agree with the notion that Harper is in the process of being Quebeced.
  15. Fingerprinting helps the police solve crimes. The question is, can the gun registry do the same? How would the gun registry solve crimes? The only people who have registered are very unlikely to then take them from their lockup, rob the local 7-11, then put Ol Smokey back in the rack for another holdup. Fingerprinting , and the gun registry, do nothing to prevent crime.
  16. This video is much, much better if you view it in a buried bunker surrounded by sealed canisters of rice. Convincing , even.
  17. Good for him. Everybody is welcome in Alberta.
  18. As always I am profoundly moved by the depth of feeling expressed here, but one thing puzzles me. Canadians are, per capita, the largest energy gluttons on the plant. Yes, that includes you. Gluttons. An obvious personal choice, the only responsible choice, is for all of us to immediately leave this frozen land and head south. You cannot live here and not consume serious amounts of energy, and cannot avoid generating serious amounts of greenhouse gases while doing so. The only responsible, personal act of integrity is to leave immediately for a climate that uses far less energy for day to day survival. I haven't seen one post here or anywhere else that announces an imminent departure. Who is willing to leave, now?
  19. Does BMI mean Bowel Movement Index? Really, who has more than 25 poops per day?
  20. So, you are now angry that the lobbyists aren't allowed in the war room? You just can't please some people. This article says a lot more about Don Martin than it does about Harper.
  21. I don't care about any of that, your culture is your business. All I want to know is: how much more will any form of 'Atlantic Alliance' cost me as a Canadian taxpayer? If anything, very little. The idea behind Union is to help the region become self-sufficient over time so that it does not need assistance from the rest of Canada. I don't want to hear "if anything, very little". What I want to hear about is the immediate costsavings for the poor citizens of Candada who have propped up the economic disaster that is the Maritimes. Provide a cogent plan that benefits the nation as well as serving Maritimers and I'll be right there with you. Until then, not interested. Nothing but selfishness prvents the four provinces from negotiating the kind of cooperative arrangements that BC and Alberta just concldued and that will reputedly save many m,illions. Anything less is just talk, hot air at that.
  22. If you were actually on the no-fly list, they wouldn't have ..let you on the plane, right? The screening you got sounds like what every passenger receives at Heathrow.
  23. Please do not mention these two in the same sentence. Byfield is a hardcore Christian whackjob, further to the right than Attila the Hun and the target of much deserved ridicule. Gubter is a moderately conservative writer who is correct at least as often as he is wrong.
  24. I don't care about any of that, your culture is your business. All I want to know is: how much more will any form of 'Atlantic Alliance' cost me as a Canadian taxpayer?
