  1. The Green Shift is the best plan to shift the taxes onto polluters and lower taxes for individuals. Can you imagine having from $1300 to $2400 more in your pocket every year? AND have alternate energy sources, like solar that are cheaper to use. We are not hearing about the economy of Norway crashing!!! How come? They have implemented the Green Shift and their economy is humming along.
  2. Harper goofs in French Once again, Stephen Harper has proven that it is normal to slip up in your second language. Today, he claimed that the Conservative Government has saved Canadian families $300,000 on average. It's not a big deal, except to the extent that it proves that Mr. Dion's one interview retake is irrelevant. October 11, 2008 Happy Valentine's Day, Mr. Harper OTTAWA – At a rally in Guelph, Ontario today, Stephen Harper encouraged Canadians to vote for his party on February 14. “Friends, on February the 14th, in a time of global economic instability, I want you to ask Canadians - I want you to ask your friends, your neighbors, your colleagues to choose the only party that has a prudent and proven plan.” We don’t think that this is a question of language for Mr. Harper since he delivered this early valentine in English. We are sure Mr. Harper would like to clarify for Canadians that Election Day is actually October 14, since when you're running a trillion-and-a-half-dollar economy, you don't get a chance to have do-overs. Don’t worry, Mr. Harper, misspeaking in an election campaign is common. We’re sure that no one will question your competence and qualifications to be Prime Minister just because you got the election date wrong by four months. And may we be the first to wish you a Happy Valentine’s Day, Mr. Harper. A video clip can be found at: Where is the argument now???? It's really pathetic to demonize Dion for not understanding if he was to answer the question from Murphy in the past sense or the present sense. It really was a badly structured sentence and I thought that journalists were language experts. Harper and his conservatives are just showing their ugly side again.
  3. This headline is deceiving. In truth, the guy (once in charge of the Quebec Liberal wing) was nailed for a land deal, and for stealing money from (wait for it) the Liberal Party. * 1997 Corbeil was regional director of Monteregie office, from whence accusation of conspiracy to defraud Liberal Party * co-conspirator Joe Morselli, now deceased * allegations Corbeil received substantial kickback for helping Carriere Bernier Ltee (quarry and paving company) purchase land owned by federal government * Police say Corbeil allegedly received money from company owner Real Ouimet, also now deceased * Real Ouimet was described as a businessman with close ties to the Conservative party * Four years later, after a Quebec newspaper uncovered the deal, then Public Works Minister, Conservative Elmer Mackay, apologized to the House of Commons for making arrangements to sell the land without tender * “It’s highly likely that there will be other charges,” RCMP spokesman Corporal Luc Bessette said at a news conference. “Ouimet’s name has come up in the past in connection with questionable land deals with the federal government. In 1989, Carrière Bernier was able to buy federal land near the airport in St. Jean sur Richelieu that was never offered through public tender. Four years later, after a Quebec newspaper uncovered the deal, then public works minister Elmer Mackay apologized to the House of Commons for making arrangements to sell the land without tender. At the time, Ouimet was described as a businessman with close ties to the Progressive Conservative Party.” http://www.canada.com/montrealgazette/news...ba-4de672f79140
  4. A journalist's take on business, news and people in Canada and the U.S. Diane Francis Canada's Jim Flaherty: The Forrest Gump of Finance Ministers Canada is "just a box of chocolates" to Flaherty and his foreign investor fans. Exhibit One All Canadian workers took a hit. The Canada Pension Plan has lost $158 million on its income trust portfolio since the Oct. 31, 2006 attack by Flaherty. This on top of $35 billion lost in total, not counting lost opportunity costs after the Prime Minister's promise to protect them was broken. Exhibit Four Flaherty has given away chunks of Corporate Canada and forgiven future taxes. Here's the math in one case: Abu Dhabi's acquisition of Prime West Energy Trust for US$5 billion removes an estimated $32 million paid in withholding taxes by its foreign unitholders; $57 million paid by its Canadian unitholders and another $25 million deferred but eventually paid by RRSPs. That's $114 million a year which the Arabs will use to make tax-free payments to their foreign bondholders who just bought their bonds this week to pay for this takeover and two others. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is more but the above exhibits are enough to make any Canadian sick. And Steve, the economist allows Jim to bumble on. Guess neither knows wtf they are doing.
  5. The truth regarding what happened with the crime bills that the lyin' Harperites keep saying are blocked by Liberals............ http://tinyurl.com/2bkrnj The Conservative government has introduced a total of 13 justice bills in the past year. Seven have received royal assent, two are still being debated in the House of Commons, and the Senate is working on the final four, all of which have been in the upper chamber for less than two months. Five of the seven bills that have passed faced absolutely no amendments from the Senate, instead offering observations designed to guide both the House of Commons and Canadians in interpreting the new laws. Truth be told, it is actually the prime minister who has shown a disingenuous concern for his legislative justice agenda by refusing to accept a deal from the Liberals to fast-track justice legislation, which has consequently left several bills flapping in the wind over the summer. Additionally, the possibility of proroguing when the House of Commons returns brings the prospect that all bills sitting before the Senate will be required to start over again at first reading -- if, that is, a senator reintroduces them. Of the four justice bills in front of the Senate, there are several substantive concerns that must be addressed before they become law. For example, Bill C-22 makes no distinction between sexual predators and sexually immature teens when it comes to the potential of being classified as a registered sex offender, and Bill C-35 provides preferential treatment to criminals who commit violent offences that do not involve a gun. Falsely accusing Liberal senators of stalling legislation, using the death of a child for political gain, or triggering people's fears based on misinformation, is governance of the worst kind. These tactics only serve to reinforce the cynicism Canadians feel towards politicians and increase the public's concern that government officials are not representing their constituents and communities. It's time to be truthful with Canadians, to accept that those who represent other parties are not always the enemy, and for Harper to grasp the concept of cooperation for the greater good. Larry W. Campbell is a senator from British Columbia.
  6. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/sto...8/BNStory/FrontSoon we will again have the government that Canadians deserve and the Kelowna Accord will go ahead. Plus the deal for cities and the day care agreements with the provinces. And once again women equality be not be wiped off the government web site, literacy funding will again appear, personal income taxes will again be lowered, personal exemptions will again be raised and seniors will no longer lose their retirement savings to a Flim Flam finance minister. ---- The quoted text was edited down due to cross-posting the entire article and the quotation feature was included for the sake of clarity. The title of this thread was initially: What makes him a great man and Canadian subtitle: Thank you It has now been altered to convey a more precise description of the topic with the hopes of instilling a fruitful discussion.
  7. TORONTO -- The federal minority Conservative government's efforts to clamp down on the gun violence plaguing some of Canada's big-city streets are being thwarted by the Liberal-dominated Senate, the country's justice minister complained Tuesday. Liberal justice critic Marlene Jennings fired back at Nicholson, saying it was the government itself that previously delayed moving on its own legislation. The result is now a backlog in the Senate, she said. "Not only is he the hypocrite, he thinks he can get away with cheap shots on the basis that most people won't know what the facts are," Jennings said from Ottawa. http://tinyurl.com/2cl698 -end quote Rob Nicholson, has the gall of a republican politician. He’s adopted the international conservative signature method of lying to himself, his party, parliament and and the people to cover up for his own failings. Rob, like good Conservatives everywhere, also likes to pretend Canadians are stupid. But, it is Rob’s party that sits as the only minority government in our history incapable of achieving even minor legislation, a task easily accomplished by simply meeting other parties half way. The Conservative, “crime Agenda” is one that Rob wants everyone to believe, failed in the “Liberal dominated Senate”, when in fact it was he that withdrew the ‘agenda’. Rob wants Canada to believe that his incompetence, the fumbling and bumbling of his leader and the total void of even basic qualification within his own party can be masked by the battle cry, “it’s the Liberals fault”. When you take something off the table that everyone’s ready to vote for and then say someone else is to blame, that's not political strategy, that bald faced lying, Rob. Not to mention that those bills that the "Liberal Senate" is not passing only got to their Chambers in JUNE. JUNE ... and no time for debate.
  8. No need for new military units, says Hillier Last Updated: Wednesday, July 25, 2007 | 9:48 AM ET CBC News http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2007/07/25/...er-cfunits.html The federal Conservatives' campaign promise to create new army units across the country appears to be in doubt after the country's top soldier suggested the proposed units are unnecessary. -end quote At least someone has some sense and wants sanity to reign. What on earth does Canada need with 130,000 or so soldiers? Does Harpie think that we should attend every war in the world and even start our own like his bud Bush does just to keep the "photo-ops" handy? So far Deceivin' Steven has spent $20 BILLION on military for equipment and such that won't be available until way after Afganistan 2009 deadline. But hey... it's stuff on O'Connors list and he admits it. Quote-"It's my list: Restoring ships, Arctic ships and frigates and airplanes and trucks," Defence Minister Gordon O'Connor said earlier this week. The list also includes tanks, jumbo aircraft, frigate upgrades, new troop carriers, heavy-lift helicopters and new airbases. -end quote That's more than $22 billion, which doesn't include the billions more for operations and maintenance. Screwing the country over just to have an easy photo-op is Harper style. Ordering all this stuff without going to bids is also Harper style and is scandalous since he had a fit when the Liberal government awarded contracts lower than $30,000 without open bids. Where are the bids for all this $22 billion in military equipment? Steve spends more in a few months than the Tory Chuck Guite funneled to ad agencies in years.
  9. So Stevie duck taped his caucus and his staff... whoopee!!! And now he is again copy-catting Chretien with his "third way" speeches which contradict his previous statements and probably what he really thinks about Canada. After all, this is a man who said of his own country: Quote: "Canada is a Northern European welfare state in the worst sense of the term, and very proud of it." (Stephen Harper, Address to the Council for National Policy, June 1997) "Canada appears content to become a second-tier socialistic country, boasting ever more loudly about its economy and social services to mask its second-rate status, led by a second-world strongman appropriately suited for the task." (Stephen Harper, National Post, December 8, 2000) "There is not a national government because there is not a national economy, no national culture, no national defence. The problem is not that the wrong party is running Ottawa. The problem is Ottawa." (Stephen Harper, L'Actualité Magazine, May 15, 2001)
  10. What Flim Flam doesn't know......... http://caiti-online.blogspot.com/ CANADIAN ASSOCIATION OF INCOME TRUST INVESTORS WEBLOG Too bad some of the posters here also don't know squat. Listen to the experts. I am glad to be in over my head with them.
  11. Also goes to show where this "newish" governments sympathies lie..... and it's not with the common guy/gal. W'all can get lost and just come out on election day so Stevie can have his majority and continue to sc**w over Canada and Canadians.
  12. Give Harper a majority and this is what will follow as he changes Canada in his own image: This incident happened at the assembly in Saskatoon, April 1991. At this policy making Reform Assembly health care policy was presented under the head "Provincialization". Below is what one former reform member wrote: The resolution on health care was introduced by a special committee personally appointed and chaired by Preston Manning. It called for "provincialization" of health care. A resolution from Swift Current calling for "the continuance of universal medicare in Canada" was not even allowed on the agenda. When it was introduced as an Amendment. Preston Manning opposed it. His "provincialization" resolution became the official Party policy. Equally significant is a background paper by the Resolutions Committee justifying "provincialization" and opposing the Swift Current resolution is date January 13/91 and reads: "The Reform Party opposes increasing use of the spending power of the federal government in the areas of provincial jurisdiction, such as Medicare, Education and the like". "The issue of medicare creates distinct policy problems for the Reform Party. If the Reform Party endorses universal medicare as proposed in the Swift Current resolution, it will then have to indicate how it intends to do this. This will invariably lead to Reform taking substantive legislative positions in a major area of provincial jurisdiction, which will lead to serious contradictions with our constitutional and fiscal policies". The debate on this occurred at the Assembly at Saskatoon, April 1991. Within two months machinery was put in motion leading to expulsion of the four persons who insisted on introducing the Swift Current resolution as an amendment. There are many other expulsions and also 1 court case that I am aware of in 1993 in Ontario for fraudulent misrepresentation. I am sure there are many more people who know of these same incidents and there are probably more that I have never heard of. Enough said and by the way I am not a "SPY" these are true incidents.
  13. How nice of Stevie to keep alive Paul Martin's budget allocation for refitting the frigates. And to make a public announcement yet..... Paul Martin must be so pleased.
  14. Anyone who owned IT knows that what this government did to them is bad and that it stopped billions from entering the treasury. BCE going private means less taxes. IT's being bough by foreign companies means less federal revenue. I doubt that there will be enough funds to lower the GST without raising personal income taxes. The surplus is disappearing. The posters here who have supported the elimination of ITs don't own any stock, didn't lost from $25,000 to $100,000 in net value and now need to scramble to pay bills because their income has dried up. It's always easy to be flippant when one doesn't know what they are talking about but just parroting the party line. The senior who lost $100, 000 in net worth will remember when he votes in 2009. I always identify what is quoted. Quote -The retired teachers who collect a pension from their pension plan which owns BCE, and which does not pay taxes on its investment income, are now able to split that pension income with their spouses, and reduce their income tax. The inherent inequity of our tax system is amplified. Public revenues go down. Our largest public company slips off the market. Private income trust investors lose tens of billions of dollars. And all taxpayers will feel the effect. The prime minister calls himself an economist. It is to laugh. -end quote All those taxes from BCE - gone with much smaller returns in federal taxes that someone has to make up. Who will it be? Certainly not another GST cut. Can't afford a personal tax cut. Harper and Flaherty are in over their heads.
  15. http://www.thestar. com/comment/ article/229732 Jun 27, 2007 04:30 AM Carol Goar All he wanted to do was be a good citizen. For his efforts, Don Wilkinson got the brush-off from Revenue Minister Carol Skelton, a curt lecture from two senior officials of her department and a revealing glimpse of how Stephen Harper's government works. Wilkinson, a retired insurance broker living in Mississauga, files income tax returns for about 60 seniors and people with disabilities. He has been doing it for 25 years. He charges a nominal fee and ensures that his clients get all the benefits they deserve, no matter how many letters, phone calls and faxes it takes. His dealings with Canada's last 14 ministers of national revenue – Liberal and Conservative – have ranged from courteous to cordial. They turned chilly in February of 2006. -end quote How can an elected Minister be so cold to one of it's voters? Not to mention a devoted member of the Con party?
