  1. The problem is that a public broadcaster with a budget of over $1billion, provided annually by the feds, has no place in a competitive industry -- I am not saying to shut th CBC down, just spin it off into a private company. All the major Canadian networks (CTV, Canwest, CHUM which is CityTV/others) provide the best programming they can, which the Canadian viewers want to see, so as to get more viewers. If those programs happen to not be filmed in Canada, then what is the problem with it? Whenever the feds get involved in a social issue like "Canadian Culture" or "Canadian Unity", they tend to overindulge financially in making sure their objectives are met. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> How much Canadian content is on the other stations I wonder, most likely the minimum?
  2. I don't know.... it seems to me that the NDP may just represent what more Canadians feel moreso that the CPC, very regional party that.
  3. I really don't see a problem with arming our border guards. In fact it seems a sensible thing to do when you consider their jobs. Edit* We have to keep in mind what their jobs really are, it isn't all just about asking about cigarettes, taxable goods and alcohol.
  4. nice words for Campbell... I think BM was a jerk and he sure is proving it to us now woth those quotes.
  5. Is that the most recent reason for invading Iraq? Ok thanks, it was getting difficult to keep track there... appreciate the help!
  6. it's quite obvious that the US Media is in flux, not in a good way either. When dissent or questions are raised anyone that doesn't tout the party line is labeled an UltraLeft radical or worse unAmerican. Take for example when Mirror complained about moderation, Burns' response "Hardcore-leftists like you frighten me. You have no respect for debate, alternative views, i.e., truthful views, or anything that does not fit your world-view. " This is the crux of complaints about the right wing conservative viewpoint, they somehow manage to turn it right around, it really is incredible! The same thing happens down there. I don't see anything changing down there, when people noticed there were issued and the Mayor of NO got upset and it was apparent that they felt abandonded by the Feds and by FEMA the spin started. I have heard everything from he's a crackhead to the entire thing being blamed on him. In other words, don't question Dear Leader. The media are too afraid of the Republican Spin machine, and well they should be.
  7. and the Liberals smack back. http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentSe...tacodalogin=yes
  8. Close August... but I think its really "fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again."
  9. The difference being that the NDP didn't just join forces with the Liberal party and then call itself the Liberal party then fire all the Liberal staffers. See, it even looks sordid when you read it!
  10. apologies, sometimes the fingers run faster than the brain. I thought you were and was wrong. It is amazing how many forums are full of the " Deafening Silenc e" comments about the world community.
  11. I think your comment is facitious but I am not sure. I'm of the opinion personally (because of these types of comments that have been rife for the last bit) that you all need to fix your own shit. Altruism is completely lost on you lot. you don't give to get. You give because you can. I for one won't donate a red cent.
  12. The fact that you use the sources you do destroys any legitimacy that your posts (or opinion for that matter) may contain.
  13. He's feeling rather chuffed that he is wasting good TV air time, on the BBQ circuit and writing colums for the Sun paper without the chance to have an election now... I do feel sorry for him though, the majority of Canadians are fine with how things are going right now, and are in no mood for an election. Harper will be schooled properly this time around. The majority of Canadians are not fooled by his tweaked promises and can see through to his real agenda.
  14. I've only seen the one based on HealthCare and it left me wondering what happened to the original Tory policy on Health Care? Could it be that Harper will say/do anything to get elected including saying that Healthcare needs fixing but not changing?
  15. It seems that Pat has a real problem with saying stupid things.
  16. perhaps based on your post I am glad that the "west" didn't get to make the call on this one... to what end our involvment in Iraq? to be mired in the quagmire as well running up our own deficet just to placate whatever it is that you feel that we owe to the Americans? its an unjust war carried out in the face of International condemnation and based on lies. Give me a break
  17. While my initial reaction to your post was...well ... nervous laughter, I re read it and am inclined to an extent to agree with you. People are fallible and and the fact that this kid duped some well meaning corrections staff into letting him go to a halfway house is well, unfortunate, especially if he decides to go on some sort of rampage. However, our corrections system is still based upon rehabilitation and reintorduction into society and not soley punishment. The problem with the Death Penalty is that it is so final... no second chances... ever. How many stories do we hear of people later found innocent having been put to death? How low of an accidental death percentage of innocents is allowable? 1%? 2%? Will we do need to stiffen up our Pimp Hands a bit in regards to the type of situation that you bring up, there has to be some limit to our anger and need for vengence.
  18. What "compromise" has been offered, other than to shut up and accept the status quo? -k <{POST_SNAPBACK}> what is the status quo? Being part of a well respected country where your rights are protected and you are given whatever opportunities you choose to accept? I really don't understand the whole seperatist idea, I mean at least I can see that Quebec has some major differences.... but Alberta??????
  19. I love how the wantabe republicans on this board react, it'll drive the dems nutty and such is stupid. The US will continue to disintegrate until all this partisan bickering ends... How is it that Bolton is good for an institution that he clearly despises? On one hand I think that he may be good because he is willing to shake things up as there are undoubtedly issues at the UN, but is he the man to do this? Is this the style that you really think is needed? I doubt it really. This is a bad thing for the US AND the UN but at least Bush got his way huh!
  20. Note to self: always be polite when talking about subway-bombers and political regimes that hold public executions of homosexuals and adulterers in soccer stadiums to set a moral example. Remember, train-bombers and gay-killers have feelings too. -k <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I don't think that any one would disagree with Hillier on his general feelings but we expect those holding office or senior positions to use better language than that. Nothing to do with PC.
  21. Now there is another suspected case of mad cow in the US. And apparently there was quite a delay in getting the cow tested for BSE. What's going with the US cattle industry? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> My fav quote from the article was.... Link to CNN
  22. I think it may have been the way it was delivered. I don't think that Canadians as a whole take to people calling others scumbags (this is kinda of funny, no?) While we may privately think some as scumbags I think that we keep that private, for the most part. It also puts Hillier in the cowboy image that we see GWB as. As for Parrish, she should talk just a little bit less. Better to be remembered for what you have done rather than what you have said.
  23. No uptight, busybody Toronto bureacrat would dare complain about the gay rights parade. Likewise, anyone seen any of the costumes worn at Caribana? But I guess there aren't that many Thais so they feel comfortable expressing their indignation at sexism there. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Neither of those things come even remotely close to Nathan Phillips Square or they would have the same issues..... I am sure some intolerant person would make it a problem for sure if they did, after all we're talking Gays and Coloured people right!!!!
  24. as I said, we the government. But thanks for clarifyuing that I am correct. I think the choice at the LCBO is fantastic, there is very little that I cannot get, including Scotch that isn't normally carried (Big Single Malt Fan!) The way I see it, it would be harder for me to get some of the things that I like to from a corner store? I really don't see the advantage but again I could be wrong. BBM, Could you post a link to the report? I'll take a look, as I said before, perhaps I am missing something.
  25. How so? The way it is now, we the government get all the profits... Why open this up to the corporations? or am I missing something? How would this help?
