FPTP is extreme danger in uncertain and volatile times
Queenmandy85 replied to myata's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Just for fun, I looked at what the difference would be if an election had been held on Christmas Eve between one run under FPTP and one under PR. Based on the Dec. 24 poll numbers by 338Canada: Party. FPTP seats PR seats Seat change CPC 191 133 minus 62 Liberal 83 94 plus 11 NDP 34 65 plus 31 Bloc 28 25 minus 3 Green 2 18 plus 16 PPC 0 3 plus 3 I fudged the PR numbers up by 2 or 3 seats to make it come out to a total of 338 but the change is about the same. It shows that under PR, the CPC would never win a majority and likely would remain in opposition for a long time unless they go all Red Tory. The Liberals go back to being the Natural Governing Party but never have a majority. The thing about PR is it causes parties to fracture. There is already a bit of a civil war in the NDP and the CPC continues to suffer from tensions between reformers and PC's. Without the possibility of forming a government on its own, it would be tempting for the red tories to split and be part of a centrist coalition. As much as I do not avidly support democracy, I love politics. Next to skiing, it is the best sport ever, and Canadians are really good at it. I love the dynamic energy of the campaign office. -
Why Trump Won’t Win
Queenmandy85 replied to robosmith's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
If President Trump tells them the economy is getting worse, too many will believe it. I am baffled that out of all the intelligent people in the US, all the DNC and the GOP have are these people. Every potential candidate has an achillies heel. The best of the lot is Secretary Buttigieg, but sexual orientation is still a problem with too many voters. I had hopes for Ambassador Haley, but she destroyed her chances last night when she refused to say slavery caused the Civil War. I thought she had a brain but that ship has sailed...or sank. -

If you, Myata, could explain to me how PR would work in a Canadian Federal election. In 2021, we had 338 elections to elect Members of the House of Commons. Taking one of those elections, as an example, Vancouver-Kingsway, how would you apply PR? Don Davies received 52.3% of the votes cast. Virginia Bremner received 27.4% of the votes cast. Carson Binda received 13.6% of the votes cast. Farrakh Chishtie received 3.9% of the votes cast. How do you portion that result among the candidates in that election? Can it be done while not destablizing the government? Do propose some form of Tim allocation where Mr. Davies would be the MP for half of the sitting days in a session, and Ms. Bremner would sit for a quarter of the days, Mr. Binda would sit for 13% of the days and poor Mr. Chishtie would fly all the way to Ottawa to sit for a couple of days? The problem is, a session does not have a pre-determined number of sitting days. The other problem is each of these people have different views and the Ministry depends on having the support of a majority of MP's. With all of the rotation of different MP's with different views, there is know way for a government to maintain the confidence of the House. PR means government by Musical Chairs. The executive depends on the advice of Parliament. That advice must be coherent or you have anarchy. -
Why Trump Won’t Win
Queenmandy85 replied to robosmith's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
I hope I am wrong, but I get the sense a significant proportion of voters are irrational. Of course, that is likely due to the amount of time I spend on political forums. I see a lot of posts from Americans who say they don't care about President Trump's faults. They hate their government. It is not just their elected government. They are mad at the people who actually make the government run, the people who provide the services they need. They call it the "Deep State, the "elites," the "globalists." The truth is, they don't know who they are angry with. They are just angry. They want someone to burn it all down. Trump will win because people who should know better, will hold their noses and vote for him. He is the person who will stop illegal immigration. Deep down they know he can't, but they will vote for him anyway because he repeats the lies they tell themselves. -
Kennedy vs Trump: Bigger Hound
Queenmandy85 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Since Secretary Clinton isn't running for anything, I would have to say President Trump. I would have to say President Trump would be the worst possible President, but, since I am not an American, it is not my place to tell Americans how to vote. He will win in 2024 and that will have a big impact on Canada and the rest of the world. -

Well, I think I'm real. That Blade Runner guy has his doubts but think I'm real. As for the intelligence part, nobody as ever said I was particularly intelligent. That may be a software glitch. But then, I refer to Michael Crichton's fictional character in the Andromeda Strain, Dr. Jeremy Stone said, "The survival value of human intelligence has never been satisfactorily demonstrated." 😎 -
I didn't mean it is new, but we only have a few. We need a lot more nuclear power plants, not just in Canada but around the world. China is a leader in the developement of thorium reactors but Canada's Candu reactors can use thorium as fuel. It is not as effecient as LFTR's however. SMR's will be great in rural areas but in a metropolis, you need multiple large scale reactors. As for long term waste, power generation from fossil fuels, if operated according to the manufacturer's operator's manual, will produce fallout (CO2) that will cause the greatest mass extinction rivaling the permian. Most life cannot exist without liquid water. Nuclear power plants are safe and will help us reduce our carbon emissions dramatically.
-
Mr. Poilievre has promised to start building a lot of new nuclear power plants across the country. That is the solution we need. He will be the Prime Minister in less than two years and the work to reduce carbon emissions will finally get some traction. Once we show the world what we can do, we can export the technology. How do you spell "green?" $$$$$

You will find more accurate information on the greenhouse effect in a number of journals in the library and they are free. Mr. Rosenberger's statement: indicates he is a communist and anti-Christian. It is the Constitutional role of the Monarch to guide the government. The term "globalist elite" is straight out of the socialist operating manual. It is a phrase that is anti- conservative. Freer global trade is what makes the computer you are using and the internet you are communicating with affordable to you.

Of course conservatives are happier!

In spite of the continuing drop in the polls, I still predict Mr. Poilievre will win the next election. Sunday's 338 seat projection showed a drop for CPC from 208 in November to 191. Still lots of room and Pierre will prevail. Merry Christmas. -
It is time to count our blessings, and to remember the message of Christ, to love and support one another regardless of our differences. Merry Christmas to you all and may we have a better year in 2024.

Lincoln had an affair with an army Lieutenant. FDR died in the arms of his mistress. Most Presidents have mistresses (or misters). I believe Carter was faithful. Affairs sort of goes with the job. As Secretary Kissinger said, "Power is the greatest aphrodisiac." -

Don't sell picture books short. I have a collection of 758 comic books. I have learned a lot from them, particularly from the Uncle Scrooge and Donald Duck series. I learned about the 7 cities of Cibola from references to the Junior Woodchuck's Guide Book that Huey, Dewey and Louie always carried. I learned the Lone Ranger's Creed written by George Trendle and Fran Striker. It may come from a comic book, but it is a great guide for life. FYI: if you ever need a winning trivia question, What are Huey, Dewey and Louis real names? -

I deleted that post. I should not post anything before I've had my coffee and it was unfair to Myata. Yer Pappy was a wise soul, as are you. ? -
Governments are consumed with the need to find more and more jobs for people. It drains the treasury and distracts from more essential business. The essence of Canada, the thing that makes this country great, is our wilderness. Now we are losing it as people spread out away from the cities. They say Canada has lots of room, well, so does Russia. Let Putin take people in.

I advocate for reducing the population. It has to be gradual, but if there were fewer people in Vancouver or Toronto, we would not need builders except for maintainance of the existing housing. Eliminate apartment buildings giving us more space. As the population falls, we remove unused homes. We do not need people to work in Tim Hortons or Starbucks. We now have the technology in a room called a kitchen where you can actually make your own coffee and even bake a few doughnuts. With a reduced population, we will not exhaust our resources that future Canadians will need to survive. In the past, we had a population of 12 million and we thrived. Now, we have the technology to run this country and protect it with a third of the population.
