Milliken on the Power of Party Leaders
RNG replied to Evening Star's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
There is still the threat of kicking a rebellious back-bencer, hell even a front-bencher out of caucus. There go your research funds and on and on. So the leader still would carry a big stick, even under this scenario. -
And Obama has a Nobel peace prize. Go figure. Sort of dilutes the impact.

Are you a total Keynesian, or just the spend other people's money half Keynesian?

More power to them.

Get Your Fiscal House in Order, Because You're Dragging Ours Down
RNG replied to Smallc's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Yup, you are probably right. But see the problem? But I am surprised. You are showing a way more fiscally conservative outlook on this than I would have expected. -

Are you aware of the political/environmental storm here in BC about oil and LNG tankers. Go to the great lakes and then you have what, 4 political entities to fight? -

Exactly, we are arguing the same thing here. That's why the pipelines to Kitimat are so important. They would greatly reduce our dependency on the US market. -

I agree with most of your post. But you have railways and the St. Lawrence going for you. Our products need a pipeline. Not a big deal, if done correctly. But our First Nations want to hold us to ransom. -

Let the US worry about themselves. I'm trying to help Canada. Lets get our oil and gas to world markets. -

Revenue is not the problem, spending is the problem. Martin did good, but by robbing CPP, EI and other things. We need to spend way less. I'm not sure if the military is the place to do it, but there are tons of entitlement gimmee's that could be axed. -

I don't think you will ever see the death of globalization. The fact that Halliburton moved their head office to one of the UAE give you a hint? So dream on. We had better react to this reality and adjust as necessary rather than futiley trying to hold back the tsunami of world wide free trade. -
@ Molly. How do you define those who can't perform a job? Quite a while ago, my wife took in her asshole cousin who left home because his mother actually wanted him to go to school and study and stuff like that and when he wouldn't, she quit feeding him till he got a job and paid rent. So he left, whined to some sociologist grad who could only find work as a welfare councilor. And they gave him money up the stump. That is wrong. Yes, there are cases of real need. I have no problem with that. But the above, and so many more like this are just wrong.

I have thought for a long time that we are screwed. The US is an economic wreck. Unfortunately we are their largest trade partner, and even worse, they are our largest trade partner. Their deficit, and more importantly their debt is going to kill them. As soon as oil transitions to being traded in Euros or Rhimbi their currency will tank, and our economy will follow them into the gutter. The only hope we have is if we railroad the first nations into allowing us to build the gas and oil pipeline to Kitimat so we can export liquified natural gas and oilsands oil to Asia and Europe. I got the Chinese currency wrong, but you know what I mean. -
I don't think there is much different here then when I talked with Quebecers at university in the '60's. They want total independence in matters of law and government, but still want those equalization payments and other federal bailouts/subsidies/bribes. Let them go, but they will be really gone.

And the real challenge is how can he deliver for Quebec without alienating the ROC?

Of interest to me is that if I am driving an older, bigger vehicle that gets 25 mpg, trade it in on an econobox that gets 50 mpg, and drive the typical 20,000 km per year, (sorry for the mixed units) I save $3,057 per year on gas at $1.40/l. What is the payout? Not talking environmental concerns, but purely economically that may not be the best decision. FTR I do drive an econobox.

Are you referring to the wheat board that monopolizes the sale of western grains, but the Ontario and Quebec farmers aren't hampered by the eastern bastards subjugating the western farmer?. -
