I prefer to deal with reality. I can't control what ridiculous fictions you've been reading.

Obvious/Fancy/BigNoise vs Silent/Simple/NoNoise
Bryan replied to August1991's topic in Health, Science and Technology
Definitely put it where it makes the most sense from a user standpoint. If it's a stand alone function, fine. But if it belongs grouped with other functions, then that's where it should be found. Communicating the new feature is a separate issue. That's what user manuals, blogs, newsletters, press releases, ad campaigns, emails, etc are for. There is the other option, that even Apple does use from time to time, and that's drawing attention to the new feature the first time someone uses the updated software, and giving them the option to dismiss the popup ("don't show me this again")or let it keep reminding them until they get it. -
Your gender is a biological fact. Portraying yourself as something other than that fact is the choice. I know many that have made that choice. Several that changed their minds later on too.

Did someone else tie them down and dress them up, give them hormones, surgery, etc, against their will? Or, did they do those things because they wanted to?

I have to laugh at that article trying to claim they aren't the same. They're EXACTLY the same: wishing you were something that you are not, then going about pretending to be that other thing. Cue the mock outrage when others don't want to play along.

You'd be amazed how easy it is to be "on" Facebook for the purposes of joining a specific group discussion, yet still very much not be on Facebook for the purposes of anyone outside that group being able to find you. On the flip side, you absolutely can pay to get yourself promoted on Facebook too, so that you'll show up in people's recommended lists on the sidebar, and so that your posts will show up in their feeds more often.

Show me a black person who can just decide to be white. Maybe then you'll actually have a point here.

That article is one of the greatest pieces of unintentional comedy that I think I've ever seen.

That is actually a perfect example of left-wing bias on display in academia. Reality doesn't fit the "progressive" narrative, so they just change the definition to suit the agenda.
-
National Post is the least bad, but their overall bias is still decidedly left. One editorial from the publisher once every four years doesn't even come close to balancing the thousands of stridently anti-conservative and/or pro-liberal articles that they publish all year long.

I wonder if the real issue is that some people just don't like the word normal. Or, more specifically, they think that if something is said to not be normal, that in itself is a pejorative. If something is not what you typically expect to see -- the average experience -- it's not normal. I'm left-handed. I have no issue with people saying that it's not normal, because it's quite obvious that it's far less common than being right handed. The world is not designed to accommodate me, nor should it be. Because I am the one that is different. It's nobody else's problem to make sure that left-handed versions of anything are available to me. One of the machines that I use at work is set-up with all of the controls on the right. It's extremely awkward for me to use. But it would be ridiculous for me to expect them to retrofit the thing to suit me.

The latter most certainly is.

Did you put that on your census?

ALL of it is fictionkin. You are what your DNA says you are. The rest is just extreme cosplay.

We looked like we were the only adults in the room. As an international statesman, Harper was one of the greatest sources of pride in this country's history. If there was ever a justification for withdrawal, it's that the agreements were made by a completely different country.
-
Recently? Kyoto. Also, the U.N. convention to combat desertification. Agreements with multiple foreign nations, where we were told "the future of the planet" was at stake. When the agreements no longer made fiscal sense, we appropriately pulled out.
-
They also can and do pull out of some of those agreements when they no longer make sense.

Transgender people will be protected in Canada.

They don't ACTUALLY exist. It's make believe. -
It's pretty naive to think it would even end there.

No idea. -
Political correctness is starting to get ludicrous. Social conservatism is the polar opposite -- it is taking the most prudent path practicable.
-
It's not moving in the direction of "quaint", it's starting to get ludicrous.
-
The long term political appearances and correctness in this country always pushes ever farther away from social conservatism.
