  1. I think basci healthcare should be controlled by the federal government. To make it the same across the country and I do believe it would cut down on duplication costs and probably a little siphoning off of Health Care Funds. Seems our provincial government are a little too interested in getting money from the federal government with no strings attached. We do have private clinics here in BC operating on a precarious legal grounds. However much I do not like them; we use them as it is often our only option to avoid a year long wait for a MRI scan. We pay premiums in this province (BC) and therefore should be able to sue for non delivery of a paid for service. I would prefer user fees to private clinics. Just get it back working. The provincial governments have no interest in having medicare working smoothly as it is their method of prying more cash from the feds.
  2. noelandmero; I would love a copy. Did you get it from a website? You could just post the web address.
  3. Bush Sr and Barbara and John Major are reported to be in Port Hardy fishing on Jimmy Pattison's yacht. Seems we are paying for heavy security and perhaps for flying them in.
  4. Are our Canadian doctor's going to be too busy with their new position of writing prescriptions for American patients that they never see; to see Canadian patients. That could mean a furthur drain on our system and accessibility to doctors.
  5. The Government in BC was looking at contracting out our health care data management to an American firm. Technically that would make it possible for the US govt to use the homeland Security Act to access personal information from our medical records. I am not sure what is happening there. Just like the raids on the legislature; this government finds ways to bury any information getting out to the public. Many things are fact accompli before we hear about them.
  6. vancouver.indymedia.org Greg Philo So why does the news not give proper explanations of the history and context of events? One reason is that the news, exists in a very commercial market concerned with audience ratings. Pictures and action dominate and it is better to have great pictures of being in the middle of a riot with journalists ducking stones than to explain what the conflict is about. There is a second perhaps more crucial reason why the TV newsrooms do not dwell on history and origins of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. This is that to refer to them as under-lying the violence could be very controversial. Israel is closely allied to the United States and there are very strong pro- Israel lobbies in the US and to some extent in Britain. It is clear that a lack of discussion on the news of the origins of the conflict and the controversial aspects of the occupation would operate in favour of Israel. For example, Israel prefers to stress the attacks and bombings made upon it and the anti-semitism of some Islamic groups, rather than to have the legality of its own actions subject to public debate. The settlement policy is widely regarded as illegal in International Law and this has certainly been the view of the British Government. Some newspaper reports consistently refer to the settlements as 'illegal' but this is not done routinely on television news. Without the discussion of origins and causes, we are left with accounts on the news of day to day events, in which it can appear that the 'normal' world is disrupted only when the Palestinians riot or bomb. This is of course the view of the Israeli government and the news tended to oscillate between this and the view that violence was perpetrated by both sides in a 'cycle' of 'tit for tat' killings. The Palestinians believe that they are resisting an illegal and violent occupation. From the Israeli Government view the Palestinian militants are merely terrorists to whom they are 'responding'. There were many examples of the Israeli viewpoint being actively adopted by journalists and built into the structure of coverage. Palestinian bombings were frequently presented as 'starting' a sequence of events which involved an Israeli 'response', as in: ' ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I think this article explains a lot.
  7. Excuses, excuses excuses. Israel has always had the upper hand. Israel has made aggressive attacks not defensive actions. Don't forget the American girl dressed in brightly coloured clothing that they ran over and killed with a bulldozer.
  8. Foreign ownership is acceptable for some industries. I do not want foreign ownership of our media sources or transportation systems. I do not like any foreign ownership of our Hydro power. I think all the daily necessities of life should remain domestically owned. There should be limits to foreign ownership of much of our resources to ensure that they are not used and abused.
  9. Just what are you talking about Bro? I am not any party supporter; just choosing the least of two evils. Anyhow, if that is why they were fired; they are fighting back and will probably be reinstated again.
  10. Build the wall within Israel's original boundaries; not on occupied land. Simple!!!!!! Quit the land grab!
  11. Show me where he said that. I am not a Liberal; nor an NDP; and certainly not a Harper Conservative but better the Liberals than Harper with his adoration of Bush.
  12. [quote): A truly happy day for liberals and their supporters. They now have another public forum they can support, but like the CBC,it is one sided, biased, racist, and about 90%fictional.Another great day for democracy in Canada.___________ Yes. it may well be. A necessary balance to the propaganda coming from the south. There are still gullible persons here who believe that the USA was justified in invading Iraq. (Still looking for those WMD)
  13. If you want US first; vote Harper.
  14. I do think this is a serious topic and we should look for answers to why these people were fired.
  15. I believe al jazeera is a fairly moderate and as unbiased as most stations here in Canada or the USA. It is time we were allowed to hear all sides of a story and make our own decisions where the truth lies. We do have many Muslims and Arabic people in this country. To many on these forums; any criticism of Israel is "anti-semetic". I don't believe that is what anti-semetic means. We can criticize the leaders of other countries, our own Prime Minister, our Premiers, and any other public person unless we libel them by telling lies; why should we not be able to do the same with Israel. Why should that country and its leaders be exempt from scrutiny and criticism?
  16. I don't think many of us were intrigued by Harper; we were angry at the Liberals and their shenanigans. However, the majority did not want to subject ourselves to Harper and some of his radical ideas and his fondness for Bush and his politics. We want a Canada that stands for her ideals not a US copycat. If the Conservatives had a more moderate platform and leader; they probably would have walked away with the election.
  17. Put the wall up on their own land not the occupied land and most would have no problem with it.
  18. It is NOT a comment to cloud the issue. Palestine cannot be run by a strong government until Israel gets out of the occupied lands and quits attacking the Palestinians. There is no excuse for the overkill that takes out innocent civillians including women and children. Terrorists can exist anywhere; they are not as easily controlled. Sharon may be taking a good step if he does move the wall onto Israel land. How can Palestinians be responsible for the state of Palestine when the Israelis will not allow them to have a state
  19. I believe that most treaties have not yet been signed. That is the problem. They do try to claim most of BC; that doesn't mean that they will get most of BC. They always had fishing rights; I think the commercial fishing rights are new. It did used to be illegal to buy fish from the natives. I imagine it still is unless they have the commercial licenses.
  20. You should let us know who you are quoting. Rabble News does not sound very reliable to me.
  21. Remember Rabin; he was seriously working towards a peaceful settlement with Israel's neighbours. It was one of his own people who assassinated him.
  22. Of course the Arabs and particularly the Palestinians are inclined to be anti Israel..So would you if they kept attacking your country; taking over your lands and bulldozing down your houses. If you have had innocent children killed by the overkill mechanism of Israel; you would hate too. I do understand that works for Israel and its dislike for Arabs/ Palestinians, too. But Israel does have a powerful military with top notch weapons and a very powerful ally. It is time for the moderates on both sides to speak up and take charge. I am sure that most ordinary citizens would prefer to live more peacefully.
