The irony of what you said is not lost here. The CPP fund was saved by Paul Martin. He had the forethought and wisdom to take necessary steps to stave off a crisis, before it became out of hand. For his work he was given international recognition as one of the worlds top leaders. Something the current leadership has no sense of. There's your "short sightedness". It's too bad Paul Martin was undermined by Chretiens corruption and vindictiveness as he retired, because he is exactly the kind of leader Canada should have.

Well I do give them credit, regardless of whether you consider me a fool we all benefit today from the good work that Martin did. The unemploymeny insurance fund had a big surplus, and Martin used the money tp pay for the debt and other things as well. He did reduce the premiums somewhat, but also saw an opportunity to actually get ahead of the game, use some of the extra money as a safety cushion for a possible future recession, so that Canada would be in a good position to ride that out. In doing so he gave Canadians an advantage, and that's where our current situation comes from today. Meanwhile I'm sure sme of you wouldn;t mind to have dumped the money into the pockets of thousands of people, who want to collect pokey money. I applud the tougher stance on unemployment. There should only be minimal coverage, as long as there's jobs out there, go and get them. Put down the beer, and take a bath. Get off your duff young man. The money had to come from somewhere, it is not "slight of hand". Real debt was really paid down. Far better than giving it to mismanaged auto companies and banks, I think. Meanwhile what have we here... a government that seems to be doing its best to undo the advantage Canada has had.

Canada's economy has been doing well for quite a while now. But in recent years a lot of financial ground has been lost, as the national deficit has balooned up by a large amount. And if we keep giving bailouts to banks when they don't need it, that does not help the country. But for recognizing Canadas unique good health in the world economy, let's give credit where credit's due- thank you Paul Martin.

I'm inclined to give some respect to posters like Shady, DogOnPorch and Ghosthacked. Whether you agree with them or not, at least they have the guts to be honest about their views. Not hide behind excuses or politically correct doublespeak. -
Afghanistan: 'Nobody is winning,' admits McChrystal

Win means stay in the region much longer. Why go home and sit around on the base again, when we can keep playing army. -
Elvis Costello, an anti-semite?

Seems like you only offended in trying NOT to offend. In doing so you went against the standard group-think around here. That was your mistake. Anyway, you couldn't win on that no subject matter what you said. Seems the only way to not offend, is to say nothing at all. -

No, they didn't. Because the Feds sent in Oliver North, and called him hero. -

I'm starting to doubt that. It seems very suspicious why the top General would be so vocal in his statements that the mission is not going well. Another theory is, that's what they want the public to believe. From what I read, the Marja battle was more than 15,000 coalition troops against a couple thousand Taliban. The most high-tech army in the world, with overwhelming numbers against a band of peasant warriors with bent Kalishnikovs. How could they not win? It makes no sense, unless they don't want it to be over so quickly. And then all the negative publicity statements from the General makes sense... -
Better that a bllion goes to government than 20 billion goes to organized crime. Plus the expemse of fighting the drug war decreases. The money used for police and courts can be invested elsewhere, to fight more serious crimes instead of locking up benign pot smokers. But it will never happen, as long as the prison-military-industrial complex is so deeply ingrained into the economic machinery, that is AmeriKKKa...

Surprising to you, maybe. Likely the number is even higher, and some of those women are just too "nice" to admit it. Probably everyone has fantasies. We can't always control the thoughts that come out of the more primal parts of our brains. The difference is in how many are unable to resist and willing to act upon them. Uhh, no, ...

"I don't want to have to go down to a memorial where my son died on 9/11 and look at a mosque," said retired FDNY Deputy Chief Jim Riches - whose son Jim, a firefighter, was killed on 9/11. "If you ask me, it's a religion of hate," said Riches. Rosemary Cain of Massapequa, L.I., whose son, Firefighter George Cain, 35, was killed in the 2001 attacks, called the project a "slap in the face. I think it's despicable. That's sacred ground," said Cain. "How could anybody give them permission to build a mosque there? It tarnishes the area." http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2010/05/06/2010-05-06_plan_for_mosque_near_world_trade_center_site_moves_ahead.html Understand now? -
Why is there a sudden push on several fronts here to endorse the seal hunt? This whole situation is becoming comical. - The Great Canadian Sealhunt Farce

Conservative tea party activist Mark Williams has called the proposed center a monument to the terror attacks. Stringer has been the target of disparaging remarks by Williams for supporting the plans and has defended his position and denounced offensive speech directed at him or at Muslims. Bruce Wallace, who lost a nephew on 9/11, said the center can change the misperceptions about Islam. "The moderate Muslim voice has been squashed in America," he said. "Here is a chance to allow moderate Muslims to teach people that not all Muslims are terrorists." There's your Tea Party for ya. Acting on the people's emotions, divisive. Just more of the same -

NYC community board OKs ground zero mosque plans NEW YORK - After hours of contentious public comment, a New York City community board voted late Tuesday to support a plan to build a mosque and cultural center near ground zero. "It's a seed of peace," board member Rob Townley said. "We believe that this is a significant step in the Muslim community to counteract the hate and fanaticism in the minority of the community." Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, executive director of the Cordoba Initiative, one of the project's sponsors, said he understood the pain that people have about 9/11. But he said his community and congregation were among those that died in the attacks. "We have condemned the terror of 9/11," he said. The NYC community board has got it right. It's time to let the wounds heal. -

You were the first to do that actually, and I can go back in the thread and show precisely where you did it. As you often do in other threads as well. You are to blame for taking the thread down to that level. -

That's the problem with terrorism- so inconvenient -
There's also going to be a second effect that saves money- less people going through the legal system and going to jail.

The Habs did well to get as far as they did, but they simply had no answer to the Phillys intense pressure play style. May the best team win.

i didn't say we have no right to judge it. I don't want you to misunderstand me here... just pointing out that we are in an era where people are now more willing to do extreme things to promote their causes. There is a perception that peaceful process, while tolerated has accomplished nothing. And we have many examples where our leadership takes steps to enforce their wishes, in what would be called criminal action just a few decades ago. There is no one to stop them. The concept of justice and tolerant behaviour cannot be taught in a greater way than the example given by our own leadership. As long as we as a society ignore this and look the other way, we breed the next generation of extremists. -
I have never seen ANY of the shows mentioned in this thread, for which I am exceedingly grateful. And I NEVER will. Truth is, one only needs not to watch it. If thine TV offend thee, shut it off. Shut it off.

But that is precisely what the state teaches us, that's what it demonstrates as a solution to its problems. Negotiations, sanctions, those methods are weak and irrelevant. Only violent action gets the job done. And the state has shown time and again, that justification is irrelevant, when it comes to using FORCE. -

I know a lesbian "family" where the kids belong to one of the women. She left her husband and moved in with the woman. They bought a house, got a couple of dogs, the whole works. Three years later she moved out with her kids, moved back in with the old man. Needless to say, the kids are friggin messed up
