  1. I got 17/35, mostly by lucky guesses.
  2. Its on page 3 of the Guardian article.
  3. In regard to the hospital in PEI, there is no way that the hospital administration did not know that the ER was running so poorly. With people waiting for 12-14 hours, this couldn't have been an isolated case. Likely also that the management has tried to get government to provide more resources for the ER (ie, give us more money). There are often remedial steps that could be taken, to mitigate the problem of long wait times but sometimes the management refuse to take them, seeing it as a short term solution to a long term problem and wanting to put more pressure on the government to meet their demands. In doing so they create a crisis, to give themselves a political advantage. I have seen where they will close beds and reduce services, even lay off staff but never reduce the level of management. The absurdity of the situation is that it ultimately leads to a dysfunctional organization that does not provide adequate health services, but is full of bureaucrats. And THAT, is what's wrong with the health care system. NOT, the concept of socialized health care with the idea of equal access for all. It worked much better years ago. Now ask yourself, what is it about the system today that is so different from the past? Corporate business strategy applied to health care, with little regard for the patients who are in fact used as pawns in this game. That is whats causing these problems.
  4. Right. Plus, supernovas. If we could tap the nergy from supernovas, we'd have way more power than even if we drained the sun down like a giant nicad battery. All we need is for Spock to whip up a matter/ antimatter interface, and viola... limitless power...
  5. As the zen story says, you cannot teach a dog Buddha-nature.
  6. It's entirely possible that information like this can be used to cause harm to soldiers or civilians who cooperated with them. Even mission parameters could be compromised. If so, how is it possible to leak such vital information, what safeguards are in place that should have prevented it from happening. Surely with the kind of money we spend on the military and on communications technology, it should be possible to have processes in place that would make it difficult to leak sensitive information. Going after the perpetrators is one thing, as is looking at the system that safeguards information that is so vital, that people could be killed if it was given unauthorized access. Is there any possibility to protect people now at risk. Why were the names of Afghanis who cooperated with our troops recorded in a database that is not secure. What is in these documents that is so dangerous. Why is no one really analyzing and commenting on the content of the documents.
  7. Because your value system is based on "production". All elements of society which I generally oppose. But a good speech nonetheless, one which I would imagine Lucifer giving to his followers, in hell. I admit, the fact that we are from completely different "worlds" on this matter comforts me...
  8. Ah yes, the blessed security requirements that make this world so safe and secure. We have put "security" on such a pedestal that it is now sacrosanct, held high above all other human virtues. How dare you ever challenge or question the security agent. Please answer all questions truthfully. Fill out your forms. Provide photo ID. Fully disclose your financial and medical history. Refusal to do so is a criminal offence.
  9. Yes indeed, the definition of "success" being tied to how much money a person has. That's part of the mental illness. I do not hold a rabid hatred for the rich, any more than I hold it for any type of person but I see them as having a disease. Most of the ills of the world can be directly connected to human greed, wouldn't you say? It would be more accurate to say, I pity the rich. I also pity the people who are manipulated to live by their rules, the incorporated whores who sold their souls for a bowl of rice and a bit of bread, and the dream of being like the rich, some day. In other words, all of us.
  10. Being rich is not a genetic disorder, but it is a mental illness.
  11. And you are a capitalist, wishing to plummet all to the lowest level of mediocrity (except yourself), fairness be damned.
  12. True that. As usual, there are some reports that attempt to cast doubt on the leaked information, while others take it at face value. I am not going to "make up my mind" yet to whether any of the leaked information is true, or not. Having not read the thousands of reports, and having no way to corroborate the information, I leave it to the partisans to "believe" what they will at this stage. (Not you Cap, he knows who I mean...) It is ironic that in this age of information, we actually have a lot less info we can rely on. So, in this sea of confusion caused by wave upon wave of information, some of it true and some of it lies, there is really only a few ways one can get a sense of whether something is true or not. That is based on the administrations response to it, whether they come out and refute it, or bury it. Or go after the guys who leaked it. Those are often the only clues we have to the real truth. And in this case all I can say so far is, they demonized the guy who leaked it, and they don't seem to want to talk about it. I'll keep watching.
  13. Excellent, that there's hope for people like Shady to grow a brain as well.
  14. Exactly as stated, you people attack the messenger first and foremost, and ignore the message. Must be hard to roll them eyes so much as you do, with your head constantly buried in the sand. WikiLeaks report details previously unknown `friendly fire' incident involving Canadians. OTTAWA - The dramatic WikiLeaks report contains details of what appears to be a previously unknown `friendly fire' incident in Afghanistan in which it says four Canadians were killed and seven were injured. The incident may have occurred the same day, Sept. 3, 2006, as four Canadians were officially reported killed by Taliban insurgents - not by their own side in the conflict. In its report the anti-secrecy group refers to a ``friendly fire'' incident in which soldiers received small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades from a building, returned fire and dropped a guided bomb, heavily damaging the building. ``Casualties 4xCND KIA 4xCDN WIA,'' the report says, meaning four Canadians killed in action and four wounded. A few minutes later, wounded had increased to seven Canadians and one Afghan civilian interpreter. September was a devastating month for the Canadian Armed Forces in Afghanistan, where 10 soldiers lost their lives. Afghanistan-war analyst Janice Stein said there are more friendly fire incidents than ever make it into the public domain because officials do not go back and correct themselves if they find an incident was friendly fire - not enemy fire as first announced.
  15. I was fortunate to start working in the system when it was still in the "olden days". This is before MBA's ran the administration. The Admin was run by doctors. But not just any doctor, it took one who had excellent talent as a manager, as well as being an MD. Those kinds of people were rare, but that's the reason why they were also paid well for what they had to do. At the time, the same people who ran the hospital also still saw patients in the clinic. Why was this better than what we have now? Because they understood the nature of the medical operations much more than an MBA could. The MBA knows how to run a business, perhaps, to maintain a level of efficiency in production and throughput. Yet hospitals by their nature cannot be run like a business and still maintain a level of excellence in providing personalized health care. By necessity there must be some in-efficiency. Because we are dealing with human beings, not products on an assembly line. What does it take to give real, personal human care? It takes people who are willing to sit down with a patient who is terribly ill, spend extra time with them, even sometimes their own personal time, listening to them, tending to their needs, consoling them. The people who do this are in a different class than most of us, who work for a paycheck. And I have seen, over the years how the MBA's came in and re-engineered the work environment in the hospitals, reduce staff levels, reduce resources, which upset the health care worker because it made their jobs harder. But the thing most people do not know is, despite the added difficulty put upon them, the ones who were in it because they care did not stop doing what they do, they still spent their personal time doing what was necessary to help the patient. Because they knew, they were dealing with a human being. Someone who had a family, who was going through a hard time with their illness. Meanwhile the administrators go home at 5pm, enjoy their martinis, and their fat pay check. But to those of us who care about the job, what had to be done must still be done. And that's the secret amost of you people don't know about. I swear I see it happen every day.
  16. I see a lot of news about the recent reports put out on Wikileaks. Thousands of pages of documents, some showing that war crimes were committed. There's even some information about Canadian troops were killed by friendly fire, and we were never told about it. I'd be surprised if the government didn't know. But the thing is, the news is mostly about WHO leaked it, the name of the soldier(s) involved, and attacking their charcter as well as the founder of Wikileaks. No analysis of the content of the information, no one calling for action to be taken, if crimes were committed. Just stuff like this- Informant says WikiLeaks suspect had civilian help Edit-Stop changing my title!
  17. I went with Joe Biden. His talent for comic genius is highly underestimated.
  18. Reuters 7/27/2010 — Al Qaeda's No. 2 leader condemned a French move to ban Islamic face veils in an Internet message posted on Tuesday. Ayman al-Zawahri said in the audio recording that a bill passed by French lawmakers which could fine women for appearing in public with face-covering veils was "an attack on Islam." The new law, which still has to be vetted by a constitutional body and approved by the Senate, could make France the second European country after Belgium to criminalize the veil. "France with all its power is unable to expose the head of a nun but it attacks every veiled woman." the Egyptian militant leader said. "This is the freedom of the infidels and not the freedom of Muslims who hold fast to their religion" I think al-Zawahiri makes a good point here, it is a law being used to specifically target muslims, when there is no real problem.
  19. Here is my anecdotal experience as a health care worker on the inside, for over twenty years. When there is a problem in the provincial report, as there recently was in cancer care showing that our hospital was among the worst in the province, management has emergency meetings to discuss how to deal with the problem. Dealing with the problem means, in the first case to provide better statistics. In the case of cancer care, it means re-interpreting the meaning of the statistics by, for example, identifying a population of patients who do not qualify for the statistics and thus they can be dropped off of it, not included and so this improves the "report card". Things look better now, with no actual changes to the way health care was delivered.
  20. If it can't be found on Google, it can't be true.
  21. Yes we see how Google is cooperating with governments in countries where there is less freedom of information, by making deals with those governments to restrict some content they do not want people to easily find. Google has no problem acting as controller of the information, even when it goes against our own values of freedom of speech and democracy. There is no reason to doubt that Google is also limiting our own freedom to find information, for those things that might criticize our own government policies. Once again it's about the money. Just curious, what was the other search engine you used to find the informaion?
  22. Offend Latinos? Surely does not matter from someone as unimportant as me. Newt Gingrich on the other hand, and his ilk, have no problem offending many US muslims. But thanks to powerful people like Newt Gingrich, US will become just like Saudi Arabia. Immigrant Groups to be Fingerprinted Mentally ill deported without legal aid Senators want troops along U.S. border http://i890.photobucket.com/albums/ac101/Bandelot/SovietTroops.jpg What is the definition of irony.
  23. Man, no wonder people think you think what you said you actually don't think.
