  1. The result has been that Mr. Arar, already the victim of inhumane and degrading treatment in Syria, has been subjected to further suffering owing to the release of information that has unfairly damaged his reputation here in Canada. I have heard evidence concerning all of the information gathered by Canadian investigators in relation to Mr. Arar. This includes information obtained in Canada, as well as any information received from American, Syrian or other foreign authorities. I am able to say categorically that there is no evidence to indicate that Mr. Arar has committed any offence or that his activities constitute a threat to the security of Canada.
  2. The RCMP has revoked that. He was tortured. He was and is innocent.
  3. Ottawa is prepared to let Canada's two financially troubled car makers collapse rather than provide long-term financing to companies without a viable future, Industry Minister Tony Clement said Thursday as he ratcheted up the pressure on the Canadian Auto Workers union to negotiate new deals to slash wages and benefits. It's just posturing ... bargaining. I heard from the union today that GM in Canada has always been profitable. Workers' wages are a non-issue. It's just negotiation.
  4. Every province and country is in economic difficulty right now. Are you absolutely sure you are going to find things 'better' south of the border? How much is your medical insurance going to cost?
  5. yup! So then she attacks personally.
  6. Here's the real rationalization. The constitutional commitment underlying the equalization program is “to ensure that provincial governments have sufficient revenues to provide reasonably comparable levels of public services at reasonably comparable levels of taxation.” OH! btw ... know why many US companies locate here? Because our health care is so much cheaper it more than makes up for the higher wages. I hope you enjoy yourself south of the border! ta-ta!
  7. I am in your position. I've made plenty of money. And I pay my taxes without complaining because I am Canadian. ps ... You haven't earned it until you've paid your taxes. That's the cost of being Canadian, eh? LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT!!
  8. On what evidence? They don't need any evidence to send an innocent person to Syria to be tortured for a year? We'd like that $10m back it cost us!
  9. We should try to forgive betsy. She gets insulting when she loses.
  10. You're being mean, nasty. He said without a mean-spirited vindictive justice system twist twist twist!
  11. I want to respond to this again M. Dancer. Why is it that people who make pots of money like to pretend that poor people are all just 'lazy'? It's disgusting discrimination!
  12. You don't get it do you? The resources of Canada collectively belong to all of us. That's what equalization is for - to distribute the wealth from Canada's resources. You think you are somebody special because you make lots of money from Canada's resources and whine like a jet engine that you should be able to keep it all for yourself? That just makes you an insufferably arrogant. Isn't that spe-cial!
  13. UN oversight? Perhaps they wanted to make sure enough people died? Because the CIA was housed there and they needed to get rid of evidence? True. It couldn't have passed a real inspection. The dust was never analyzed in the official investigation.

  15. In theory, the WTC was rigged with explosives (super-thermite), which would react to the burning jet fuel to ensure maximum destruction when the planes hit.
  16. Federal Ministry..........1995-96..............1996-97................2006-07.............2007-08 Human Resources...$33,104,939,843....$23,798,499,919....$34,628,376,627..$36,458,230,055 Finance..................$9,391,561,049......$23,936,878,861....$39,078,083,850..$47,960,402,660 Can anybody guess why the budget for 'Finance' went from $9b to $48b, between 1995-6 and 2007-8? Should Finance be our single largest expense by $11b? I think we could cut there.
  17. It said she is unemployed. No where did it say she is not looking for work. However, she has a sick husband, so caring for him may be an issue too. However, it has been proven over and over again that fresh, healthy diets are simply not affordable on disability/welfare assistance. Poor diet compounds poverty by leading to low energy, poor health, etc. In other words, poverty is a trap, because once you are there it's difficult to have the food, and thus the energy to get out of the trap. http://povertywatchontario.ca/put-food-in-...udget-petition/ Despite the evidence that the cost of shelter and nutritious food make it virtually impossible for people on social assistance to lead healthy lives, there is no formula for setting benefit rates in Ontario. http://www.citeulike.org/user/gareth/article/1417038 A reduction in diet costs in linear programming models leads to high-fat, energy-dense diets that are similar in composition to those consumed by low-income groups. Such diets are more affordable than are prudent diets based on lean meats, fish, fresh vegetables, and fruit.
  18. Because it is not a simple question.
  19. WP is legal ... just not where there are civilians. And the borders were closed so the civilians were trapped in Gaza. Seems Israel's reasoning was that they were 'still there' so they were all 'terrorists'. That's the line of reasoning that will come under questioning. There were too many civilians burned by white phosphorus. It was not used legally.
  20. What do you expect to happen when some are killed by snipers?
  21. http://www.thestar.com/News/GTA/article/619275 Poorest families go hungry all day MICHAEL STUPARYK/TORONTO STAR Patricia McKenzie, 38, waits her turn at east-end Agnes MacPhail food bank. She says she can't remember the last time she had fresh food. (April 15, 2009) Defining poverty BY THE NUMBERS 50% of families delayed paying bills when faced with food shortages 22% of families, in the past 12 months, used food banks in the areas studied Study measures depth of poverty in Toronto Apr 16, 2009 04:30 AM Joseph Hall Patty Winsa Staff Reporters Patricia McKenzie has no cable or Internet. She doesn't even have a television. She has had to give them up for a far more basic staple: Food. An unemployed 38-year-old, McKenzie says she has gone days without eating and has often had to choose between paying the rent and paying for groceries. Thus, the Dawes Rd. resident likely would find no surprises in a new University of Toronto study that suggests two out of three families in the city's lowest-income neighbourhoods are unable to even get enough to eat. ... While McKenzie, who was waiting outside the Agnes McPhail food bank at Main St. and Danforth Ave. yesterday, has no children, she says she has often sacrificed food for her husband, who is ill. "I go without fresh food or vegetables all the time," says McKenzie, who can't recall the last time she has had either. She lives mostly on canned food. No eggs. No milk. No cheese. Why can't people on disability, EI, etc. get enough money to live without hunger? Why can't people making over $1m a year give up a little so those who live in poverty can live without hunger?
  22. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/abraha...?entry_id=38580 So, in a World of nasty pirates, mean internet commenters, and crazy right-wing extremists, we have to stop and embrace Susan Boyle for making us smile. Susan Boyle
  23. White phosphorus munitions did not kill the most civilians in Gaza – many more died from missiles, bombs, heavy artillery, tank shells, and small arms fire – but their use in densely populated neighborhoods, including downtown Gaza City, violated international humanitarian law (the laws of war), which requires taking all feasible precautions to avoid civilian harm and prohibits indiscriminate attacks. The unlawful use of white phosphorus was neither incidental nor accidental. It was repeated over time and in different locations, with the IDF “air-bursting” the munition in populated areas up to the last days of its military operation. Even if intended as an obscurant rather than as a weapon, the IDF’s repeated firing of air-burst white phosphorus shells from 155mm artillery into densely populated areas was indiscriminate and indicates the commission of war crimes.
