I've argued for a long time that I don't really understand why Iran was made an enemy of the West. Back in the 70's it was modernizing and secularizing, but the CIA reinstalled the Shah aaaaand ushered in ~50 years of fundamentalism with their interference. Islam is nothing beyond what the people who follow the faith make of it, which is the same as any major religion, including Christianity. What the books say is secondary to what the people who follow the faith believe it says, or is meant to say, because that's all that ultimately matters. Both faiths have sublimely stupid passages in their Holy texts that only the blindest and least thoughtful among the faithful would accept as anything but archaic allegory. When you learn what a proper citation is, and you actually read your citations and can make sense out of them, there might be potential for debate.
