  1. In January 2025, nowadays, many ordinary Canadians go to Florida or Arizona. Or Cuba. In 1925, only very rich people went to Cuba. In the 1930s, Pierre Trudeau wanted to paddle from Key West.
  2. René Lévesque had many comments about Canada, Québec and the US. Pierre Trudeau too. What would these guys think of Trump.
  3. For America to be sustainable, for the US Constitution to be sustainable, the various US governments must be able to collect taxes at a faster rate than what people plan to spend. At present, since 2007 or so, altogether, various state and federal US governments cannot promise this. Like a Ponzi scheme, the US governments want more people to buy US paper.
  4. Since the Thirty Years War in the 1600s, Europeans have fought each other - at least, once the grand-parents have forgotten. We Canadians get along.
  5. If we Canadians spend 5% of our GDP on military stuff, as a member of NATO, we are buying US stuff.. I reckon that's how Biden got Sweden and Finland to join NATO.
  6. I would like to see someone like Thomas Mulcair oppose Pierre Pieliuevre - in both languages,
  7. I was referring to Freeland winning.
  8. Trump's SALT change really impressed me.
  9. America is the only civilised country without a federal consumption tax. To be sustainable in the modern world, a government must be able to collect taxes. The US federal government increasingly spends more than it collects. America cannot collect taxes. === At present, foreigners want US bonds dollars. Foreigners believe US paper will be worth more. This paper is a Ponzi scheme.
  10. I was recently abroad, and a taxi driver asked me about the price of bitcoin. I was reminded of the 1920s - or 2007.
  11. I have not read this thread. Carney may have the money/caucus support. I would not be surprised if she wins.
  12. Atwood described this as "survival". She's wrong. (Argentina should have survived. East Prussia has not survived.) We Canadians get along. We have managed, learned and taught ourselves to get along.
  13. Disagree. Canada has a long history of ordinary people voting across religious/racial/communal lines. We get along.
  14. I disagree. In 1911 or 1951, no ordinary Canadian took a boat to Cuba. Nowadays,, 2020s, many ordinary people born in the 1950s fly south.
  15. I entirely agree. Nixon was ambitious. Unbelievably ambitious. But Nixon was boring. ==== Trump is competitive. Ambition and being first? I see a difference.
  16. The population of Greenland is about 60,000 people. Very few of these people speak Danish, or have any allegiance to Denmark. ==== So, when push comes to shove, is it Lego or Igloo?
  17. Pablo R odriguez is not going to be PM of Quebec. Quebec politics now - for Anglos - are a conundrum, hidden in an eggshell beneath an apple tree.
  18. Poilievre's voice is too nasal. Irritating To become a PM, he needs a vocal coach.
  19. No. So, agreed. Trump is a blowhard. A buffoon. ======= Who will call him? Putin? Xe? You Democrats can't.
  20. You Americans have State Attourneys. In Canada, we have Crown Counsels - Procureurs de la Couronne. ==== I've always been confused with Federal vs State Prosecutors. And Grand Jury? WTF? (I recall the phrase: a Grand Jury would convict a ham sandwich.... )
  21. Americans are proud of their "rule of law". For over two centuries, they say, we have a written Constitution. ======= Except that you have a president who can arbitrarily change it. And governors who change life decisions.
  22. Macron is a young man married to a much older woman - but he is not a, uh, NAZI.
  23. Disagree. Trump wants us to spend 5%. ---- NATO membership means that we buy American military equipment. Equipment designed by American firms. Sweden and Finland recently joined NATO. Guess why.
  24. Work ethic is one thing. We now use time differently. Some people retire at 55 and bored, fly to Cuba several times a year.
  25. I looked at that site, for ridings in Quebec. On island, the federal Liberals will keep some. Off island, I reckon the federal Liberals will lose allL Largely BQ and maybe PC I wonder about Papineau: BQ or LPC. The NPD will get nothing.
