On the political side, every indication is that Republicans will lose. -in local elections, Republicans only win when they gerrymander -California and New York are now solidly blue -Florida is the one exception - but when DeSantis spoke about abortion, that killed his chances -even Trump did not win a majority -Republicans cannot "get out the vote" when there is ballot harvesting

As a foreigner, I have been thinking about this. The federal Republicans are on the wrong side of two central issues: -abortion -debt reduction ===== You Americans have a pay-as-you-go federal pension scheme - far more generous than my RRQ. Your Medicare works better than OHIP. And you have a military. Paul Krugman described the US federal government as a tank with a pension and health plan.

In the 1960s, we Canadians faced this "nationalism" divide. What to do?

I don't give a damn about truth and reconciliation
August1991 replied to I am Groot's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
First nations? No. I was curious about slavery. To me, slavery is a lack of choice. -
I too like the reasoning of Thomas Sowell - but he lacks the data. Many children in the past lost a father, mother - many women died in child-birth. The child was raised by older siblings, or aunts - and we all are still here. ====== In the 1940s, many German/Russian men were killed or maimed. As a result, many Russians and Germans born in the the 1950s had no father. IMHO, black Americans are not dysfunctional the same way.

And how is that different from what is happening now? Is the federal government treating natives any differently? ==== What has struck me about slavery is that families were separated. At the time, mothers and fathers -people in love- were separated. True, this happens now. -
In 1867, the first 4 provinces were Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scoria. And the Nova Scotia delegation then voted against! PEI joined after BC. ===== PEI has some 100,000 people? How much did the bridge cost?

Most Canadians want carbon tax reduced or killed: poll
August1991 replied to CdnFox's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I think that the federal government should simply tax CO2 emissions - and send any collected revenue to people in the province, or the provincial government. At present, we have a 10 cent excise tax on each litre of gasoline. Tax CO2 the same way. ==== These current methods to subsidy to EVs, battery producers, solar, windfarm, charging-points is a scam. We want to reduce CO2 emissions? Tax them. Share the revenue. -
Nationalism & Canada: Sikhs & Ukraine

I was travelling in Finland several years ago. I was on a train/metro to the Helsinki airport. I looked around at people. ===== We Canadians - somehow - integrate different people. Scandinavians don't. -

Dougie, The Seven Years War had two treaties - the Treaty of Hurbertusburg is the more significant. It was a war between Prussia and Austria - about Saxony. === Napoleon - like Hitler in Compeigne - won at Austerlitz. -
I too have wondered about this. But then I have thought about what happened in Russia in 1942 and 1943. I have asked Russian women about this. In general, German soldiers were respectful. Romanian soldiers were not. I reckon that any Russian soldier who had crossed the Oder in 1945 was an ignorant peasant, happy to be alive. ====== The British general Montgomery made an interesting remark about soldiers: in the first war, they were ignorant But in the second war, he said, the soldiers were educated. They wanted to know.

I agree with many posts in this thread - but here, I disagree. ==== Slavery is different. Curious, I have walked around places where slaves were bought/sold. This is what struck me about slave markets: children were separated from their mother, sisters from their brother -a man who loved a woman? They were separated. -

Fenian? To my knowledge, no one in my family background is Irish. === My father was upset to learn that there was a Presbyterian in his past. But I digress. -
Trudeau Getting OBLITERATED In New Poll!
August1991 replied to Canadian_Cavalier's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I have lived in various parts of Canada. It is my country. ===== Canada is remarkable We people in Canada have often been forced to choose on religious or language: Team A vs Team B. Yet, we get along. -
In general, a person does not shoplift if a policeman is standing nearby - the chance of detection. The likelihood of theft is less given the penalty - the time in the slammer. ===== This is all costly to we honest people. If capital punishment makes things better, I'm in favour. Heck, Truman dropped two bombs.

As I walked home today, I thought about the various federal leaders that I have known, met. Young, abroad, I recall meeting Pierre Trudeau in Canmore Alberta. I asked him to sign "my book". Trudeau was a smart guy. He flipped to the cover of the book to check - before he signed it. (It was his collection of Cite Libre papers.) ==== We Canadians can and do get along.
