Argus........if you feel young people should not vote, perhaps as well we should eliminate the vote for anyone over, say 65.

Should Stephen Harper Resign?
maplesyrup replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Harper's absence is a little show for his fans. He is having a bit of a temper tantrum but he will come around. Bqarbara Yaffe wrote about Harper's leadership today in the V. Sun. She said if he wants to having a chance of winning, he is going to have to moderate his views. Can he, will he, do it? Of course he will. The policy convention will prove enlightening. Never a dull moment in Canadian politics. -
Argus....thanks for the history tidbit. What's the history of our maple leaf flag? I had heard that Pearson brought it in under his reign as PM. Does anyone know where the red in our Canadian flag came from? Goldie....Happy Canada Day!

Realistically why do Liberals need to change?
maplesyrup replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
All the world's a stage, my friend. It seems to me the Liberals can pretty well govern like thay have a majority - they will get support for their right wing policies from the Cons, and get support for their left wing ideas, if they have any, from the Bloc & the NDP. I don't know why we even bothered having the election. -
Bloc dreams dashed with election results

Maybe this will bring the Bloc's dream a little closer: Automatic recount could give Liberal seat to Bloc -
Dual passports. Don't be ridiculous. Thank goodness Maher is getting an inquiry. You are absolutely full of it. You have no idea what happened, just like the rest of us. Smarten up.

The plan from Harper was to cut taxes disproportionally for the rich. But that is not what Canadians want. They want a good health care system much more that tax reductions. It was a strange campaign. Harper's financial program was dissed by many financial analysts/institutions including the BNS. -
Canada's 38th Election Analysis
maplesyrup replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I don't think the Tory problems had much to do with the Liberal attack ads. What's this big deal about attack ads anyways, the Tories ran them as well. I think where Harper ran into trouble is when he was asked about abortion rights for women. Instead of being clear, he tried to fudge it, and he blew the campaign right there in my opinion. Abortion is something we have dealt with in Canada quite awile ago. To have brought it into play during the election campaign the way Harper did, was a major blunder, from which he really never recovered. Add that to sexual exploitation of children issue, and he was toast. We all know he loves the US, but this was a Canadian election campaign. Maybe he forgot that, who knows. -
Right. Paul Martin personally put Maher on the plane back to Syria. Give us a break.
-
Maher Arar has launched the lawsuit on the basis that he was sent to Syria to be tortured with the complicity of Canadian government employees. Why shouldn't he sue if this is true? How would you feel if this happened to you? I am unclear what this has that got to do with Monia?
-
She has a name - it is Monia Mazigh. The lawsuit was initiated prior to the election campaign. What's your point?

Canada's 38th Election Analysis

Death wish This is the best political analysis on the Tory's defeat coming out of the West that I have seen since the election. -
Apparently the Germans have a form of PR. Anyone know how it works?

Poor me. Some people just don't get it, do they? Anyway: Caesar.....thanks. Happy Canada Day to all in such a wonderful country as ours. The rest of the world should be so lucky.

Very few Canadians even watched the debates, and the BS that was in the media afterwards was nonsense. I think the debates were a waste of time.
-
I doubt very much you would be saying that if you were the one that was shipped off to Syria to be tortured.

How do you know what Canada's involvement was? I thought the purpose of the inquiry was to find out Canada's role?

Interesting how so many of us thought the Conservsatives were going to obtain the most seats. I wonder why, eh?
-
I thought we were all democrats who support the idea that one vote equals one vote. I guess some of us are more democratic than others. The Greens got 4.3% of the vote - don't the people who voted for them deserve 13 seats in the House of Commons?
