  1. You give me too much credit for creativity. I just heard it on a TV News Flash. I suppose it will be on the 11 PM news. We can disagree peacefully you know.
  2. There is nothing you can to with fundamentalists whether they live in the US or Holland or Iraq. They are all crazy. But if you choose to purposely aggreviate them, you could pay a serious price as did van Goth.
  3. Couple of interesting twists to this story - police are looking into whether speeding was a factor, and also that the logs may have been stolen.
  4. Don't be absurd. The trucks are double the size they were in the past. I don't think any size car would have saved the people that were killed in West Vancouver.
  5. Every police force in Canada probably has serious problems. I mean think about who would be attracted to this kind of work in the first place? Secondly police forces don't represent the societies in which they live i.e. most are still while men. And third policing has changed a lot, police don't walk the beat and get to know the people in the community they way they used to. But in spite of all their problems they are still all we have got to protect us. So we don't want to kick the baby out with the bath water. It would be interesting to do scientific surveys with people who have had experiences with the police to see what they say. I am not talking about the criminal elements in society but the law abiding citizens if there are any, that is.
  6. Quebeckers have beeen doing this for quite awhile. I am not aware of problems however I have not lived there for some time. You go to a couche-tard, pick up your bottle of wine, and then go to the restaurant for dinner. An advantage is that it makes dining out quite a bit less expensive. Jeez, why are anglos so uptight about things?
  7. Good advice here for the Democrats, but are they smart enough to listen? Learn How to Lose
  8. If I remember correctly, it was the lack of working via the United Nations, not wanting to get involved in an illegal war, that pushed Canada away from getting involved in the US Iraq war. And it has turned out to be one of the best decisions we have ever made in Foreign Policy. Now watch while PM Martin blows Canada's credibility out of the water.
  9. Now that the police officers have been fired, what is next for this troubled police force? Saskatoon officers fired over native teen's death
  10. That is a diversion from the issue we are talking about. No one said truck drivers were bad people. The issue is that the trucks today are too big for the roads and the small cars that drive on them.
  11. He looked pretty good in that video the other day, just before the election. No cave man, he!
  12. Do you really believe that underage teenagers don't drink alcohol? What planet do you live on? We are talking here about a restaurant that has a license for people to bring their own liquor, but the restaurant will supply the corkscrew and the glasses. Have you never experienced that in Montreal? Where have you been?
  13. It is very important for Canada to remain strictly neutral, and only support those that are working towards peace concerning the conflict in the Middle East. I did not see that from neither Sharon nor Arafat. I would like to see a change of leadership on both sides, which will create a better opportunity for peace.
  14. I am not making any judgements about the specific incident yesterday in West/North Vancouver. But it has been bothering me for a long time, that these big trucks are now too big for our roads. And probably because of deregulation, drivers are not paid properly, or enough, so they work excessive hours, and when one is overly tired is when a lot of accidents happen. Just because that is the system, does not necessarily mean it is a good system.
  15. The Architects Of Defeat I agree with the author of this articvle. it is time for some serious bloood-letting at the Democratic party headquarters. It is time to move on from the Clintonites - they were fine in a different era, but the world has passed them by.
  16. 'Evangelical Christianity Has Been Hijacked': An Interview with Tony Campolo Anyone here heard of Tony Campolo? Anyway , he is raising what I consider to be an interesting point. Quite frankly I have been stunned by what I consider to be the hijacking of evangelical Christians by the right wing politicians.
  17. If I were a cafe owner with no liquor license and then all of a sudden my patrons wanted to start drinking in my restuarant, I would have to arrange for the staff to go through some training to learn about cutting people off, etc.. How do you do that when it is their own liquor could turn out to be quite difficult, especially if they are drunk. Maybe that is the reason for the reluctance in AB. I wonder how it is addressed in Quebec.
  18. Well, Quebec has been doing it for many years and it seems to be quite successful. It makes dining out more affordable, but I am curious about who is responsible for excessive drinking. In BC if you are serving alcohol and someone gets plastered and then has an automobile accident, the restaurant/bar owner and even the server/bartender can be held partially responsible depending on the circumstances. Prohibition didn't work for adults so why do we think it works for kids? I think a much healthier approach is to introduce alcohol gradually to kids, rather creating this suppressed desire to drink, and then the usual blowouts when they become of legal age to drink.
  19. BYOW. Are you refering to legislation that will allow patrons to bring their own bottles of wine, whatever, into a restaurant and have it opened and glasses provided, so that the patrons may consume it on the premises?
  20. Bavaria bans teacher headscarves I have always been against public displays of religious artifacts because religions breed intolerance and we don't want to promote intolerance in our society. But according to the Bavarain officials they are banning the headscarves because they oppress women, however they will continue to allow other religions to display their symbols. What do the Muslim women say?
  21. Dutch liberalism stares into a troubled future as anti-Muslim backlash grows We are going to have to take precautions in Canada or we could similiar problems here. The question is what to do. How do you educate a society to be tolerant? The kids of school age are one thing, hopefully they can still be taught respect for different cultures. It is the Canadian adults I am concerned about, what to do with them.
  22. The sentences are too lenient. If van Goth were still alive and living in Canada, and he made those derogatory comments about Muslims, such as calling them goatfuckers, he should be charged under Canada's hate crimes legislation. It is not complicated, it is basic societial norms we are talking about here. He exceeded them and brought the violence upon himself, and I have no sympathy for him.
  23. You make taxes sound as if they are bad. They are not, they are good, and we would not have schools, roads, healthcare, police, military, libraries, parks, etc., without them. None of us particularly enjoys paying them but we would not have services for all without them. If New Hampshire is so wonderful why don't you move there? You sound like you fit right in with Bush's United States anyways.
  24. You have no idea what you are talking about. There are societial norms. In Canada there is something called hate speech, and there are criminal laws to punish those that do it. I am not familiar with the laws in the Netherlands but if they do not have hate speech legislation, they had better get some in a hurry.
  25. I hate to break it to ya, but PM Martin is from Windsor, Ontario. The Liberal Party of Canada has had a policy, an unwritten rule I believe, of alternating between a francophone and an anglophone leader. As far as civil servants go, you are promoted on merit. One important qualification is bilingualism. If more Quebeckers are going to be bilingual than others, then they will probably get more of the jobs. If you want to be a civil servant learn French, or English, as the case may be.
