  1. This is one of the reasons the NDP is slowly gaining support in federal politics: NDP may force House vote on controversial missile defence: NDP's Blaikie What is the point of having a vote after the deal has been agreed to? Democracy my ass. When the NDP go ahead with this vote, you will see the other parties start to sweat about it. Chances are it won't get approval because party politics controls the MPs, but it should prove enlightening nevertheless. /67
  2. Bush doggers have PEST If US citizens are considering moving to Canada now, what will it be like if Bush institutes the draft. I would imagine it will be bumper-to-bumper one way traffic heading North. My how times have changed. Before you know the US is going to be complaining about the brain drain leaving the US. /530
  3. Gold matches 16-year high as dollar nears euro low I wonder what this week will bring us in currency, oil, and gold values. For those who want a lower Canadian dollar it sure does not look like a good beginning to the week. But you never know, as you could always win the lottery! /676
  4. Slapping the Other Cheek I wonder if Ashcroft stepping down will help matters. It seems he was the most divisive cabinet minister that Bush had in the first term. I wonder if Colin Powell is going to stay on. I hope he does for the sake of the United States. They desperately need some moderating influences.
  5. Good analysis of Kerry's election defeat. Too bad as it was a lot closer than most people realize - just one state Ohio could have put him in the White House. So important to stay on message. Oh well! On the trail of Kerry's failed dream
  6. As Trudeau said a long time ago, maybe it's time to diversify our trading partners. Of couse he was labeled a communist for those remarks.
  7. I half to laugh at all the Canadian naysayers. I remember when the Canadian dollar was falling, and all the talk was about what a terrible economy Canada had. Now that our dollar is rising, all those naysayers are silent. Any excuse to attack Canada, eh!. This rise in the value of Canada's currency is a report card on Canada's economy. It is looking great, and Canadian vacationers who like to travel abroad will be delighted, and Canadian consumers will be delighted as well. People need to chill about what is going on. The Canadian dollar was previously oversold, and now it is slowly rebounding. As long as it doesn't rebound too quickly, or too much, we will be just fine, thank you. Yup exporters are going to have a more difficult time. So, time to roll up their sleeves and get to work. Whining about it sure isn't going to solve anyone's problems.
  8. Article When someone such as Terence Corcoran delivers such a blistering attack on labour you know something good is about to happen for ordinary Canadians. It is interesting to see Canada slowly move, more and more away, from US laissez faire capitalism, and more closer to Europe's more compasionate system for its citizens. If these forecasts of government policy are what happens when we have a minority government, let's hope we have them for the next 100 years.
  9. Article Now that we have seen what the government is about, this week we will begin to see what the opposition parties are all about. I would imagine we are going to be in for some surprises.
  10. I don't think it is that complicated. No need for additional user fees (the favourite tool of the right, after lower taxes of course) which just ostrasize the poor. The author of the article has it right. Just advertise on the net. The Georgia Straight does not charge for its circulation - The Globe needs to wake up. In the meantime the circualtion (hits) of the Toronto Star must be skyrocketing. Think of how much money their advertisers on the net can make. I've basically stopped reading the Globe and Mail unless their articles are free and accessible. And guess what? The universe is continuing to unfold as it should.
  11. caesar.........stick to discussing the issues. I'll decide what is political and what is not political for myself. I suggest you do the same. This is very political for me. It involves the trucking industry, it involved the dismantling of our railway system, and it involves the safety of all the people and vehicles that use our roads. We already know that the second truck from the same company, also loaded down with logs, was not allowed to proceed, by the authorities. So the trucking industry is scrambling after the fact. Too late. /242
  12. We wouldn't have to worry about what was being said if they had to speak in one of Canada's two official languages. We could hear it for ourselves.
  13. This program is for people who can't afford to stay home with their kids. Get it.
  14. August.....it seems you have been drinking again. Jeez man, cut it out. Greg.....this is what happens when you let things get out of control. Well don't say I didn't warn you. What a brilliant thing to do, starting a thread about a person or persons, and allowing it to happen is even more brilliant. Everyone needs to clean up their act here.
  15. caesar........cut the nonsense of maligning bus drivers. We are talking here about a truck driver whose load killed two people and injured others. Stay on topic.
  16. What is the purpose of these child care centres? It is to have children of working parents to be in the best possible environment while their parents are at work. So do you want some minimum wage slacker loooking after your kids, or do you want someone who is making a career in child care? Why in the world would you want to privatize this system? Why would you want profits going out to some corporation whose executives don't even know the children involved. What is the matter with the elites in society that don't want employees to earn a decent living?
  17. No one dismisses the Fraser Institute. but let's be honest and say who they represent - the weathy in society. So whenever they make their pronoucements people should at least be aware of who they are lobbying for. Similiarly the CCPA represent ordinary Canadians, and we should know that when they make their forecasts.
  18. Top Stories - Los Angeles Times Maybe it is about time to get out of the US housing market, eh!
  19. An excellent ICBC president was Nick Geer but Campbell got rid of him when he tried to block the government's attempt to privatize ICBC. Studies show private auto insurance leads to higher rates These are the kind of brain-dead ideas we have been getting from the BC Campbell Liberals.
  20. The only way for this child care program to work properly is for it to be non-profit, otherwise large corporations will take over. We need to get out of these trade agreements that are impacting on our sovereignty. -from that same Toronto Star article.
  21. Apparently CBS is hosting a show tonight with, I presume, a former CIA agent. Maybe he will be talking about bin Laden. It is all very bizarre, apart from the fact they wanted the oil, that the US focused on Saddam after 9/11, when he had nothing to do with it. The US is still there, tied down there, and bin Laden is, it seems, still free to make videos etc., as we saw just before the US election. Is this split between Bush and the CIA for real? If it is, it is obviously not a good sign, and perhaps the reason he has not been captured yet. Where or where could he be? The last I heard he might be in the area of China, which may well be a ruse. All the world needs is for bin Laden to team up with China. Could Bin Laden possibly be in China? Former Chief of CIA's Bin Laden Unit Leaves
  22. Some people will whine about anything. SFU has a fabulous child care system - I think there are 14-15 separate units with very high standards. Hopefully this national child care funding program will augment their meagre resources. The major problem I think are the wages - who is going to stay for low wages? Strange lack of support for children. Sometimes I think our society is anti-children.
  23. US to deploy hyper-missiles Jeez, now we will not need soldiers any more, just a few missles will do it all for us. Wow, those US guys think of everything. Let's see them pick off Osama with them.
  24. Junk Food Adverts 'Banished During Children's Tv' The NDP in Canada are obviously once again on the correct track, leading the way to promote better lifestyle for Canadians. At least the NDP realizes the cost to our health care system created by unhealthy eating habits.
  25. Right. They just have tax breaks for the wealthy which is why they have no money for ordinary Canadians.
