Mchael.....I agree, first Joe Who, and now Stephen Where? It's like Harper has fallen off a log or something, and actually quite a lot of the Conservative supporters are worried by this bizarre vanishing behaviour. Apparently this is not the first time Harper has pulled this stunt. I think I know the reason for it though. If Harper is around and available, he will be querried by the media about what he really represents, and I don't think Harper really wants to go there. He thinks incorrectly that he can win on the back of this supposed "sponsorship scandal", but he is in for a rude awakening.

Olivia Chow running in Trinity Spadina
maplesyrup replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Well the Layton-Chow duo have quite a successful track record municipally, so now we will see what they can do federally. Quite the changes taking place on the federal scene, and Canada will be better off for it. Looks like the Conservatives are losing support in the West, and picking up some in Central Canada, the Liberals are losing some of their Central Canada support, and the NDP have rebounded across Canada, to make it a good three way race. -
Layton's wife will run for Parliament

Liberal poster boy: Attila of Alberta Everything that Harper has said in his previous life, before he converted to a moderate (ha ha), will now come back to haunt him in this coming election campaign.

I feel sorry for people who base everything in life on money. Very few people in BC want to move away from here. And wouldn't it be the Conservative right wing BC Campbell Liberals that are causing all this grief as they have been the BC government for the past several years, although fortunately not much longer?

Evangelicals denounce PM over 'scary' remark
maplesyrup replied to maplesyrup's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
I don't want to get into a lot of the nonsense you guys are spouting (August1991 excepted) but of course you have a right to express your point of view, taking community standards into consideration. But let's discuss an incident I recently heard about on the radio about a bar owner who I believe evicted a couple of women from his bar because they were kissing each other. What kind of tolerance is this? If one is running a public business, stick to your business, and don't try to moralize what people do. It's not like they were having sex or something. This is just plain intolerance, and I hope the woman who has made the complaint against the bar owner wins big time. There is a very fundamental reason why property rights are not in the charter of right in Canada - and it has to do with tolerance or lack thereof. Get it. -
ditto for the two previous posts.

Compas Poll confirms NDP Strength
maplesyrup replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I know these results are disheartening for the Cons as once again it shows the NDP with the momentum and closing in on the Cons. I am prepared to forecast now that the NDP will become the Official Opposition when the votes are tallied after the next election. BTW the NDP are now 2% ahead of the Cons in Quebec. Bloc 12% Cons 27%, up 1% Libs 39%, down 5% NDP 20%, up 2% Oth 3% -
Great news here for the NDP as this Compas poll confirms that the NDP is closing in on the Cons for Official Opposition. Anger over sponsorship scandal fading: poll

Evangelicals denounce PM over 'scary' remark
maplesyrup replied to maplesyrup's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
Willy.....as long as you think you have a right to made decisions over what someone else should do with their body, for example, yes I do not want you involved in any decision-making capacity in any government related process in Canada. -
Evangelicals denounce PM over 'scary' remark Here I agree with PM Martin. And the issue is one of respect and tolerance for other people's beliefs and points of view.

NDP quickly closing gap, within 5% of Cons

Jack Layton gives pep talk in Toronto; says NDP ready for election call Fallingleaf.......that is what they said in Ontario too in 1990. So forecasts like yours I like. -
Why did PM Martin failed in Washington
maplesyrup replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Try telling that to the people who work in Canada's softwood lumber industry. Or the cattle ranchers affected by the BSE crisis. Although there is something to be said, or maybe not said, for the way central Canada (Quebec & Ontario) treats the colonies i.e the West and the Atlantic region. I grew up in Quebec but having lived in BC for over 20 years now, I will never ever deal with a chartered bank again if I can help it. Thank goodness for credit unions, who keep the local money local, and the decisions are made locally instead of in Montreal or Toronto. -

Why did PM Martin failed in Washington
maplesyrup replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Goldie......82% of Canadians do not like the current American administration. What more needs be said. Most Canadians actually enjoy being Canadian, and have no interest in becoming part of the US. I think the folks that long for the US so much should leave Canada if they feel Canada is so bad. Perhaps we could give them a one-way bus ticket to Seattle if they are in the West, and to New York if they are in the East. Similiar to Ralph Klein's one-way ticket to Vancouver for people that were on welfare in Alberta. The way I see it we are way too heavily influenced by the US. Of course, like anything in life, there are pros and cons living next door to the only earth's superpower at the moment, but Canada needs to keep its distance from the US and chart its own independent couse. We need to reduce our trade with the US, and expand it with other countries, so we don't have all our eggs in one basket, so to speak. -
Martin Wins Bush Praise But No Trade Concessions Martin's is another Mulroney and that is the reason why he failed Canada on his trip to Washington this week. Martin goes to kiss ass so he can get an invitation to Bush's ranch in Texas. Who cares. At least Chretien had some class. The reason Martin failed is that Americans only understand "Hardball". If Martin had threatened to turn off Canada's energy tap to the US, the Softwood Lumber issue would have been resolved before Martin even stepped one foot inside Washington. And Harper, who would turn Canada into the 51st state the moment he had a chance, would only have made things even worse than Martin, if you can believe that's possible. What a motley crew!

I'll be blunt. Canadians don't want Bush lite in the form of Harper. Anyways Harper was the wrong choice for leader, and as a result, the Cons are tanking. It's quite simple. Get it.

NDP quickly closing gap, within 5% of Cons
maplesyrup replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Ipsos-Reid Poll Released April 29, 2004 946 Canadians surveyed on April 27 & 28, 2004 Margin of error: + or - 3.2% Canada Bloc 11% Cons 23%, down 5% Libs 40%, up 5 % NDP 18%, no change Grn 5% Oth 3% Libs have opened up a 17% lead over the Cons. The Cons are dead in the water. Anyone who hopes of stopping the Liberals from forming another majority government must now vote NDP. British Columbia Cons 25%, down 2% Libs 30%, no change NDP 26%, up 1% Grn ? Alberta Cons 46% Libs 31%, no change NDP 15%, up 4% Saskatchewan/Manitoba - huh? Cons 26%, down 10% Libs 35%, up 6% NDP 25%, down 2% Ontario Cons 25%, down 7% Libs 49%, up 8% NDP 20%, up 1% Quebec Bloc 46%, up 1% Cons 8%, down 3% NDP 8%, down 2% Atlantic Region Cons 30%, up 1% Libs 47%, up 6% NDP 18%, down 4% Conservatives are now in last place in BC. -
NDP quickly closing gap, within 5% of Cons
maplesyrup replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Why don't you post the results and the name of the polling company, etc., or is there a reason you didn't? -
Grits could win majority, poll says Bloc 11% Cons 23% Libs 40% NDP 18% Grn 5% It looks like the NDP might be on their way to becoming the Official Opposition, as they are rapidly closing the gap between the lifeless Consevatives and themselves. And don't forget this is following the Conservative leadership convention just last month where there was wall-to-wall media coverage supporting Harper for leader. What a huge mistake has been made in the choice of leader for the Cons. I tried to share with people here that Stephen Harper was a disaster waiting to happen and that is why I was supporting Belinda Stronach for the leadership, but oh no, I was some kind of evil person. Nonsense. The one thing I was most worried about, was another Liberal majority government. I hope some people will listen up this time when I say, the only way now to prevent a Liberal majority from happening, is for all non-Liberal supporters to vote for the NDP.
