  1. Bloc 41% Cons 10% Lib 39% NDP 10% New poll shows tight race for Quebec What makes you think we are about to have an election?
  2. Alliance Fanatic......I am beginning to wonder if you are that well. Have you ever gone back and read the venom that you spew out on a regular basis. This is disgusting stuff and has no place on a Canadian public political discussion board. Please add me to your hate list that includes BigGunner and Black Dog. *PLONK*
  3. Leger Marketing Opinion Poll released April 27, 2004, based on 1,500 Canadians surveyed April 20-24, 2004 with a margin of error +/- 2.5%. Canada Bloc 12% CPC 26% Lib 38% NDP 17% Grn 5% Oth 2% Atlantic Region CPC 27% Lib 44% NDP 21% Oth 8% Quebec Bloc 46% CPC 8% Lib 34% NDP 8% Grn 3% Oth 1% Ontario CPC 29% Lib 46% NDP 19% Grn 4% Oth 2% Saskatchewan/Manitoba CPC 31% Lib 35% NDP 25% Grn 5% Oth 4% Alberta CPC 60% Lib 24% NDP 14% Grn 2% British Columbia CPC 23% Lib 31% NDP 29% Grn 13% Oth 3% I guess University of Victoria political scientist Norm Ruff was dead on when in December, 2003, following the RCMP raids on the BC Legislature, he forecast large gains for the NDP in BC in the next federal election. My goodness, Cons at 23%, that's quite a meltdown.
  4. Actually Jack Layton has nothing but absolute admiration for Tommy Douglas, and Rev Douglas is the principal reason for Dr Layton's involvement with the NDP today. Combining Jack Layton's leadership with the likes of Ed Broadbent, and the Rev Bill Blaikie, the NDP is beginning to look like a very credible alternative in the eyes of a larger and larger number of Canadian voters, as exemplified by all the most recent polls.
  5. Editorial: Clark's warning should be heeded I would think that Clark's comments will cost the Conservatives 1-2% of their support, as they will resonate with a certain number of Canadians.
  6. Does anyone know at what stage the legislation to decriminalize small amounts of mj is at, or what the number of the Bill is? Or this another con (pardon the pun) from the Cotler & Martin Liberal team? Americans need to butt out of Canada's internal matters, and focus on cleaning up their own despicable drug problems.
  7. PM, Bush deflect missile discussion Too bad politicians can not be above board about what they represent, and what their plans are. No wonder we have such low voter turnout.
  8. Party/Apr04/Jun03/Aug01 Bloc 12% up 4%, 8%, 9% Cons 26%, no cge, 26%, 26% Libs 38%, down 17%, 55%, 48% NDP 17%, up 7%, 10%, 9%
  9. Minority government probable: poll I have been following the other recent polls, and the NDP has begun to narrow the gap with the Conservatives. The NDP is now within 9% of the Conservatives. If this trend continues, the centre leaning NDP are going to be seen as the main alternative to the governing right wing Liberals, and the NDP might be looking at official oposition status after the next election. On the other hand, I am concerned that the Liberals appear to be very close to forming a majority government.
  10. Actually we like in a social democratic society. Schooling, medical and dental, from the cradle to the grave, needs to be paid for out of general tax revenues, and gratis to the user. I also like the idea of ensuring everyone has a skill or a trade, the practical aspects could be acquired during some form of military peacekeeping, which all Canadians should participate in. It is too bad that it looks like PM Martin will be re-elected with a majority government, which means: "plus ca change, plus ca reste la meme chose".
  11. Canada Rocks....absolutely, what a great idea. I would prefer Cree for our third official language, and I would like to see BC adopt French as their second official language, just like New Brunswick.
  12. Most Canadians do not seem to share your point of view. A chilly spell on the Hill
  13. August1991...I have some issues with the CBC. I do not like their mainstay "The National'. I prefer the PBS approach to the news. What are your issues with them? PS August 1991....while we probably diagree on most political issues, I respect your civility. The next time I am in Montreal we should go out for a beer.
  14. Political table talk Larry's latest meandering musings. This long time political commentator seems a bit lost in the 21st century.
  15. Former Prime Minister Joe Clark has actualy touched a nerve in current Canadian politics, attacking the notion that Stephen Harper is some kind of a moderate. He is saying what a lot of Canadians have been thinking. Clark's comments will impact negatively 1-2% of the vote for the Conservatives.
  16. Over the weekend former Progressive Conservative Prime Minister Joe Clark expressed reservations over what current Conservative leader Stephen Harper represents. Clark commented he would prefer current Prime Minister Paul Martin over Conservative leader Stephen Harper for prime minister. Mr Clark stated: "better the devil you know, than the devil you don't". Some concerns have been expressed that the recent political merger between the Alliance and the PCs, was actually a takeover of the Progressive Conservatives by the Alliance. What impact on Conservative party fortunes do you think the former Progressive Conservative Prime Minister Joe Clark's statement will have?
  17. Hjalmar.....actually Dr Jack Layton has a PhD. In economics, I believe. Jack has not only brought a fresh face to the NDP, he has brought the federal NDP into the 21st century. Jack has moved the NDP to the mainstream of Canadian society. Jack is a follower of Tommy Douglas, the man who brought Canadians healthcare, and has no use for deficit financing. Jack was on a television station in BC on Friday evening, and stated that he believes in balanced budgets. I think most Canadians will relate to Jack and what he represents, once they get to know him during the election campaign.
  18. The NDP's new leader Jack Layton , has united Canada's New Democrats. Contrast Layton's performance, bringing back former NDP leader Ed Broadbent, to run as part of Jack's team, in the coming election with: 1 - the Liberals, and all their party infighting between the Chretien and the Martin forces, the Sheila Copps situation, and Mr Democratic Deficit appointing candidates like Ujjal Dosanjh, Shirley Chan, Emmerson from Canfor, and now probably Dave Haggard from the IWA. 2 - the Conservatives, where former Conservative Prime Minister Brian Mulroney is now publically backing Cons leader Stephen Harper. Harper who previously quit the Conservative party, because he could not stand Mulroney's policies, has now probably received the "kiss of death" from this endorsement. And also former Conservative Prime Minister Joe Clark, who has told Canadians that he supports Paul Martin over Stephen Harper for prime minister, and also that Clark backs former Conservative MP John Herron, who is now running as a Liberal. Keeping a political party united is key to election success, and Jack Layton is exhibiting all the characteristics of a winner.
  19. Viewing the most recent poll results don't you realize that the Cons would have been better off to have chosen Belinda as leader? And I am sureby now you have heard former PM Joe Clark's comments on CTV QP today.
  20. NDP are seriously looking at approximately 55 seats in the next federal election. I believe it is doable, and that the NDP will surpass the Bloc in number of seats. Liberals on 'razor's edge' of losing their lock on power
  21. Environics poll released April 23, 2004 1940 people surveyed (good size), between March 29 to April 18, 2004, the period which followed the Conservative leadership campaign, with its massive wall-to-wall media coverage. 22. Jack Layton was the guest last evening on viland voices (Vancouver Island TV) with host Moe Sihota and Conservative pundit Norm Spector. The question for last night's show was: "Has Jack Layton favourably changed your perception of the NDP?" Response was: "Yes" by 79% of the respondents. Anyway Layton had to deal with several hard ball questions thrown at him from Spector, Sihota, and the callers, however Jack sailed through with an exceptionally stellar performance.
  23. NDP surges in BC among other things Jack Layton and Olivia Chow must be feeling very elated right about now.
  24. Beowulf.....welcome. Bienvenue au Canada. The Greens are going to running candidates in every riding apparently. Leadership appears to be right wing, and the general membership appears to be left wing. Strange party. Green Party pins growth on 'living platform,' but will it bear fruit?
  25. ArticleArticles in National Post & Globe are quite different. Strange.
