Paul Martin announces billions more to improve health care across the country What kind of doublespeak is this coming from Martin? First he guts health care, and now Martin is supposed to be a hero because he is putting money back in. Are Canadian voters that naive? I certainly hope not.

Layton lays out promises, pledges no deficits Olivia, born in Hong Kong, has already started to impact on BC's Chinese commiunity. Everywhere Jack was, on every TV shot, since he arrived on the West Coast, Olivia was there.

Liberal minority forming a coalition with the Conservatives. Martin and Harper are two peas in a pod. As far as issues of course the privatization of health care will probably be the biggest issue. Honesty, transparency, and giving real power to our MSs, thus reducing substantially the power of PMO hopefully will be issues as well.

Jack Layton made it clear tonight in BC

Liberals (and probably Cons as well) will fight tooth and nail against PR as once implemented the Liberals or the Cons would never form a majority government again. -
Jack Layton made it clear tonight in BC

It is much more likely that the Libs and the Cons will join forces after the election to form a government as they are two peas in a pod. Health care is not in a crisis, unless you mean the crisis Martin created when he was finance minister, by providing the provinces with less money from the federal government. This whole so-called health care crisis is artificial, a smokescreen to enable privatizing. And no one has ever produced any reasearch that pritizing will save money because it doesn't exist. Just another Canadian myth. There is no way the NDP will back down on the PR issue, and there is no way the Libs will accept it. -

The 300 plus (not my counting, but the media reports I heard afterwards) folks that came out to hear Jack launch the NDP campaign were not disappointed. What a fabulous speaker Layton is. No notes for this dynamic fellow, and you could tell the Jack Layton New Democrats have the momentum. A lot BC voters will be very pleased that Jack and Olivia made an effort to be out here in BC, on the first day, to kick off the NDP campaign on the West Coast. -
NDP launched its National Campaign in BC this evening, with Leader Jack Layton speaking to a standing room only crowd. Jack & his wife, Olivia Chow (also an NDP candidate), came straight from the YVR airport to the False Creek Community Centre, on Granville Island, in Vancouver, both having left Ottawa earlier in the day. At the end of a barn-burner of a speech, NDP Leader Jack Layton made it quite clear: The NDP is running to form the government.

2004 Federal Election Predictions
maplesyrup replied to Kliege's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Question: Assuming no majority government, what happens right after the election? What is GG's role? In other words who gets to decide who has opportunity to form government? does GG decide? Is it automatically the party with most number of seats which has first kick at the can, etc.? IS GG, once appointed, supposed to be at arm's length from PM? The reality is there is no possibility for a Liberal - NDP government. Reason being, the NDP are insisting on a PR referendum which the Liberals would never agree to as under PR, the chances of the Liberals ever receiving a majority government again are dim. I predict a Liberal-Conservative coalition government. Neither of these to parties would ever admit publically to such a scenario, however they are much more similiar to each other than what is presently perceived. -
I wonder which seats the NDP are looking at in Quebec. Perhaps one of them is the riding where Bill Blaikie's daughter is running in. This election is beginning to look sweet.

NDP rise, Libs drop Ipsos-Reid (May 21/04)

Does anyone think Mr Ditherer might get cold feet between now and Sunday? That's quite a healthy drop in the polls for the Martin Liberals, primarily at the expense of the rising fortunes of the Layton New Democrats. -

Bro....good advice. Blame the victims. -
Are we going to be seeing a Liberal-Conservative coalition government? It appears now we are facing a minority government siituation, and the Liberals and Conservatives are more similar than the Liberals and the NDP. NDP, with the momentum, are only 8% back of the Cons.

maplesyrup replied to maplesyrup's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The NDP is now only 8% behind the Cons, and the NDP definitely has the momentum going into this election. I think the NDP will close the gap with the Cons within the first week of the election campaign. I guess the fact that the NDP were the federal benefactors of the Ontario budget is no surprise to me as that is exactly what Susan Riley of the Ottawa Citizen had been forecasting. Susan is one sharp journalist. I might even have mentioned her predictions here on another thread. My next prediction is that I think we are going to see some surprises in BC very soon. -
Libs 35%, down 5% Cons 26%, flatlined NDP 18%, up 3% (only 8% behind Cons) Ontario budget hurts federal Liberals: poll What a great position for the NDP to be in on the eve of the election. The only party to be exhibiting positive momentum. Exactly where Jack Layton wanted to be.
