I've gone over this somewhere before; I hope you're not thinking that it's simply a mater of multiplying 2.9 x 4... Maintaining a surplus is contingent on a number of factors: revenue, economy, accurate accounting, etc... Still doesn't change the fact that in 2006 we had a $12b surplus.

Canada Adds 107,000 Jobs in September
kengs333 replied to Jobu's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
LOL Are you serious? Learn how to read. I said that their sons are working at Tim Hortons. I am not "claiming" that people at John Deere were earning less than minimum wage at all. If you take out 800 people from an economy that employs several million people, that has little influence on the average wages figure. But if a significant number of the employed in the economy are part-time, minimum wage an increase will be reflected. Let's say there is an economy with 100 workers; 99 get $8.00/h, one gets $30.00; the average wage is $8.22/h: 99 @ $8.00 1 @ $30.00 = $822.00 ($8.22) Let's say that the one worker loses his job and that is replaced by an $8.00/job, and all $8.00/h jobs are raised to $8.75/h: 100 @ $8.75 = $875.00 ($8.75) You'll notice that even though the one high paying job was replaced by a low paying job, the average wage still increased by $0.53: $8.75 - $8.22 = $0.53 Therefore, the worker with the high wage was not in fact working for less than $8.00 as your illogic would dictate. -
Let's see some numbers. Harper has gotten us to nearly a deficit, and now we're learning that the government can't even keep track of how much the Afghan mission is costing. Pretty fiscally irresponsible if you ask me.

The vast majority of those jobs that were created are part-time, and part-time jobs usually means minimum wage. It plays a significant influence in the determination of that figure. That's all going to change shortly. -

He's right, though. What an individual candidate says may not always be in line with what the party is saying. At least individual Liberal candidates have some latitude when it comes to expressing personal opinions. The Liberal party in general encompasses members with differing political perspectives, unlike the Conservatives where everybody has to goose step according to Harper's dictates. So who's desperate in making an issue out of this one? If you want to play this game, the Conservative candidate for Hamilton Centre stated flat out that the Conservatives didn't release the platform until this last Tuesday to avoid it being critiqued by the other parties. Are we to assume that this is the official reason even though he is but one candidate in a riding that he has no chance of winning? -

Well, in Ontario minimum wage is being increased 75 cents a year, so when it goes from $8.00 to $.8.75 that nearly a 10% increase... What do you think was meant by the "tight labour market" reference? A 4.6% increase is not all that significant given the astronomical increase in the cost of living across the board. -
It should be repeated on CPAC later. I don't sit with pen and paper in hand when I watch the news, sorry.
-
Sorry, do you have a reading comprehension problem? We're talking about land claims issues being discussed in old newspaper reports, and specifically in regards to the situation around Brantford. He was in Brantford when he made the lie, and made the lie in response to a question about development that was delayed near Brantford.
-
Contact the Brantford Expositor or the library in Brantford and ask for their clippings files on old land claims disputes from a century ago and they will tell you that there aren't any.

kimmy, Let's not be naive here. The media wants Harper to win, and they want Harper to get a majority. Individual journalists may adhere to a certain standard of professionalism, and have the obligation to document the Conservative's innumerable gaffes and to conduct themselves as impartially as possible, but the people at the top are always looking for ways to subtly to influence the way the public thinks. This little incident is a non issue, but with the Cons repeatedly shooting themselves in the foot, they are going to seize upon this and try to make something out of it.
-
Harper--who earlier addressed a crowd in Brantford--claims that he's a hockey historian, and that looking through old newspapers he's come across articles from a hundred years ago discussing land claims issues. Really? I would certainly like to see him substantiate this, but of course wouldn't or couldn't because it is such an outrageous fabrication he knows that few would recognize this fact. It's certainly not something that will or would cost him an election, but it speaks volumes about his honesty and integrity, the ease with which he can lie to Canadians.

McHale running as an Independent in election

I'm opposed to racism, as well. Which is why I take issue with Six Nations. I don't think I've ever seen people who are more racist than members of Six Nations. Even you one of their supporters sees everything in terms of red and white. -

Where have I made "racist generalizations"? Is Six Nations a race? You deny that Six Nations is a race based political entity, but now you claim being critical of Six Nations is "racism". -

So auto theft is "standing up for one's rights"? Let's not forget that Six Nations police let things slide for "cultural reasons" so not all criminality is documented. I have nothing against aboriginals in general at all, just how Six Nations conducts itself, and other such groups that demand special treatment and disrupt other Canadians' lives. Also, I have a serious issue with aboriginal racists. Racism is a bad thing, not acceptable in Canadian society. -
How many languages do you speak/understand?
-
No answer? He misunderstood the question, and asked for that part of the interview to be redone so he could answer it properly. It was a little vague for someone who is not a native English speaker. That Dion wouldn't understand right away that the interviewer was speaking in hypothetical terms about Dion being PM and not if he becomes PM is not all that unreasonable. In my opinion if Harper mistook something that was posed to him in French and had an awkward moment nobody would make an issue of it. Going after someone because of a momentary difficulty with language is pretty low. We all know that Dion has intelligence and intellect--he wouldn't have accomplished what he has if he didn't--so to make an issue out of one minute or so of awkward confusion is lame, deperate, pathetic... Like I said: it's not an issue...

Someone who actually believes what Harper says?
-
The media wants Harper to win. They're looking for any opportunity to make Dion look bad, because Harper and his Conservatives are fumbling the ball so badly that they're getting desperate. So what's next? Zooming in on a drop of spilled coffee on Dion's shirt and accusing him because of that drop of being panicky and unable to manage the economy? From what I've seen, I can understand given the way the interviewer was asking the questions that someone who isn't a native English speaker could get mixed up the way Dion did. It's not a serious problem, and given the fact that Dion has for the entire campaign fielded questions from the media with no real issue, I don't see why a big deal has to be made about this. At least Dion is open to dealing with the media, doesn't have to script and control everything. We all know that Harper has the tendancy to mouth off and put his foot in his mouth every once and awhile--like that nonsense about buying stocks...

Yeah, I guess that's why the Nazis derived much of their support from conservative, ultraconservative political parties and paramilitary organizations...
