$127 Million cut from reservation housing
AngusThermopyle replied to cybercoma's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Well I have to admit that he didn't appear to actually look at and think about what I posted, otherwise he would have understood exactly the point I was making. In his defense though he is correct. The reserve sits on and is surrounded by prime well worked farm land. It's a really nice area, lots of gently rolling hills, very few densly wooded patches and very fertile healthy crops during the growing season. -

Ummmm Shady, did you actually bother clicking on the link I provided? If you did and read the first sentence I imagine you would get the point I was making. The emoticon I used might also be construed as a clue. -
$127 Million cut from reservation housing

As I'm sure you know already the Oneida Nation of the Thames in Southwold, Ontario is located just outside of London, Being from London I've been there many times myself. This link will give you a pretty accurate overview of Southwold, and as you can clearly see fully supports CR's statement as to its unsuitability for agriculture. My link -
So lets get this straight then. You yourself have home delivery yet you state that nobody gets home delivery? And this contradiction helps your arguement in what manner? Other than rendering it meaningless and devoid of truth that is.

Looking at this case from an emotional point of view I can understand the driving force behind this mans actions. Having said that however I must state that I feel the sentence he recieved was apt. He did conspire to lure the victim outside where he planned at the very least to assault him. Upon luring him out he then attacked him with a weapon in his possesion. As I said, emotionally it is understandable why he did this. On the other hand vigilantism cannot be allowed nor can it be seen as being tacitly condoned.

Military at the next G8/G20 summit?
AngusThermopyle replied to GostHacked's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Just my two cents here. It's my view that the Millitary should not be used to fullfill the function of a police force. Millitary members are not as a rule trained to act in a policing capacity. Further to that it would appear to just be a very bad idea for any government to use its armed forces against its own citizens in any capacity. I believe that only in the most dire circumstances should this option even be considered. Do we really want to become a nation where such is the accepted norm? -
I didn't know that. So I wonder who the hell keeps putting our mail in our mailbox at the end of our driveway then? Dirty buggers! I'm going to have to look into that.

Canada among 10 most peaceful countries
AngusThermopyle replied to Shwa's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
It sure is, as for peacefull, well I guess that depends on whether or not you consider standing on the edge of the precipice of Global Thermonuclear Warefair to be peacefull or not. I'm sure if you were to ask some who were involved in it such as B-C for instance, they may just give you a different perspective. Everything we did in the Armed Forces at that time was done from the basis of impending catastrophic war. The simple truth is that Humanity was closer to global anihilation at that time than it ever has been. More than a few times our survival hinged on one wrong decision, many times in fact one decision could have plunged us into global warfair the likes of which have never been seen before. Sure, for the average person it appeared peacefull, but to those of us involved in it a different perspective presented itself and we were aware of the fact that any given day could bring this horific form of war. So I guess whether or not it was peacefull would depend upon an individuals level of involvement. One thing I can tell you though is that to a man we were all ecstatic when that dammned wall came down and the Great Soviet Bear started to break up. However if one goes a little further back in time we can take a look at the world wars, both of them. Are we engaged in this form of war currently? No, of course not. However we are still engaged in a form of world war. This new world war is also known as The War On Terror. Warfair constantly evolves and changes, just because we no longer do things the way we did 60 odd years ago does not invalidate the world war premise. Then one also has to look at all the minor national and regional wars around the world, these are not diminishing in number either. The world is not becoming safer in general as some would like to believe, rather as our technology improves and proliferates it is becoming more dangerous, at least on a non Nuclear level. Of course the new threat that is on the rise is the number of states and organizations that are now gaining access to those dreaded Nuclear weapons, many of whom we would consider to be unstable or rogue, or both. This doesn't even start to consider the joint deadly and horrific factors of more accesible Biological and Chemical weapons. In effect humanity is now at a level where can conceivablly decimate all life on this planet. Some consider Global Warming to be the biggest threat humanity faces. For myself I consider fallible and even stupidly short sighted individuals armed with power and these types of weapons to be just as or an even more serious threat to our survival. Anyway, sorry for going on about this but I find that it is such an involved subject that it simply can not be addressed in a glib sentence or two. -
Pain Relief Needed for Friend
AngusThermopyle replied to jbg's topic in Health, Science and Technology
Several recent studies have shown Marijuana to be an effective non-addictive method of pain relief with no permanent or even temporary adverse affects. Perhaps your friend should apply for a medical license and give that a shot as opposed to the far more harmfull opiate and chemical alternatives. The reason I mention this is because of certain Marijuana centered debates held on this forum. It appeared to me that many posters were debating from a position of ignorance and bias so I decided to do some research for myself regarding this subject, it really was quite an eye opener. Apparently breeders of medical grade Cannabis are not breeding for exceptionaly high levels of THC but rather for high levels of CBD and CBN, two compounds that studies are showing to have many medical benefits but no psychoactive properties at all. One strain that I saw mentioned over and over was called Cannatonic, this strain produces CBD and CBN concentrations equal to or greater the THC concentrations, approx 6 to 8%. Having said that I must confess I don't know much about your friends condition. It just seems to me that a natural non harmfull alternative might be prefferable to an addictive or surgical method. I do have a friend who suffers from debilitating back pain after being involved in an auto accident. He used prescription painkillers to control the pain but said they left him useless and unable to function in any meaningfull way. He stopped using them and instead started using Marijuana and though he said it does not completely eliminate the pain it does allow him to control it and remain functional. Anyway, just some food for thought. One thing I do find rather strange about your post is that initially you state a friend asked you for help and then later you state that they detest you and you them. It appears you may have a rather non standard view of friendship. -
Canada among 10 most peaceful countries
AngusThermopyle replied to Shwa's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Are you serious? You really needed this to understand that the world is not a peacefull place? The fact that there are currently more conflicts, wars and unrest than any other recorded time in history wasn't enough to tip you off? Having spent 20 years travelling around this world of ours and participating in several conflicts has given me enough insight to understand that our country is indeed a very peacefull place to live. -
Harold Camping sets new date for end of the world.
AngusThermopyle replied to scouterjim's topic in Religion & Politics
My best guess would be when his own personal judgement day arrives. However, given his age that could quite possibly still be in May. -
Not to change the subject but what exactly does he mean when he talks of this Sikh nation? Is he talking about their land of origin and if so how could Wai Young possibly be better for them? This isn't a facetious question, I honestly have never heard anything about "Sikh nation" before.

Would someone in the know be so kind as to explain this statement to me? In all honesty I personally do not feel terrorized by Harper or Conservatives in general, nor do I know of anyone who has been terrorized by Harper or Conservatives. Have they been sending death squads out and abducting people from their homes in the middle of the night or something and I just didn't hear about it yet? Or perhaps black leather clad Conservatives have been congregating on busy street corners glaring at the young and elderly, giving them the finger and so on? Does anyone have more info about this reign of terror?

Never tried a Mission sub myself, in fact I've never even heard one. My sub right now is a Velodyne and I'm quite happy with it for now. I would like to replace it eventually, I've been checking out one by Mirage and its a really nice sub, it'll have to wait though as my better half wants me to build a small deck for her new gazebo and the cost of the new sub is about the same as the deck. I did own a set of Mission two way bookshelf speakers once and they were quite good. They were a loss leader, you know, a good set of speakers for a very low price. A lot of companies do that in order to build brand loyalty with their customers. Mission has been bought out by Klipsch so I'll be watching to see how it affects their products. JBL has also been bought out, they're owned by Harmon Kardon now, that may explain why these studio monitors of mine sound beter than any other JBL's I've heard before. In fact I've never seen JBL's that are bi-wire/bi-amp capable before. Given my way, and lots of money I'd be running Bryston or McIntosh for electronics, its a money thing though. I really cant afford 3 to 4 thousand for an amp and another 27 hundred or so for a pre amp. Oh well, one day. My two friends and I were just talking about that the other day. We're going to look for The Police Live and Sting Live, That way we'll cover the whole spectrum of Police/Sting. The girlfriend has different taste from mine so I also look for concerts for her. Actually some of the ones she likes are really good Johny Cash live at Montreaux and the Elvis 68 Comeback concerts come to mind. I've never been an Elvis fan but that 68 concert is very good, he really had a way of connecting with his audience, and of course back in 68 he was mostly still doing his old rock/blues/gospel stuff. She also wants some Rod Stewart (yuck) I'll get her one, you have to be fair after all.

Actually I agree with you so far as JBL is concerned, they're not high on my list of audio gear, but when you get a $750.00 set of speakers and a center to sweeten the deal for $300.00 you can overlook those short commings for a time. I have had to play with the highs, they sounded too bright compared to the Klipsch which have a nice clear but very smooth sound to them. This weekend I'll be bi-wiring all of them, then I'll see what effect that has. As for G3, I like them, whoever they have as a guest guitarist, but then I like most good guitarists. I'm not that fond of the artist with no name. Not that he's a bad guitarist, his music just doesn't do anything for me. Actually he's released some real pablum type stinkers. can anyone say Little Red Corvette or Raspberry Beret? One I was very pleasently surprised by was George Thorogood. He just wrings out that guitar when he gets going. Some really good slide blues when you see him live. Oh well, to each his own I suppose.

Albertans and Quebeckers
AngusThermopyle replied to nittanylionstorm07's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
This post is absolutely exceptional in that it serves to illustrate some of the reasons that people who do not live in that open cess pool you call Toronto regard it and its inhabitants with scorn and derision. Your conceit and arrogance shine through clearly. -
You're right, I have the Secret World Live and Growing Up Live concerts, they're both very good. For great sound and performance I'd also recomend Paul Simon Graceland, it's great and was also a landmark concert. Yep. I do love my system. The Klipsch Reference series mains sound fantastic and recently I just picked up some JBL Pro Studio monitors for the rear channels. They're good but not on the same level as the Klipsch. They'll do for now but I do want to replace them in the future, maybe with a set of KEF's or B&W's. Next on the upgrade list though is my receiver. I'm running a 120 w per channel Denon right now and it is a very nice piece of gear but I want to replace it with either a Harmon Kardon or Rotel unit. I'm quite happy with my turntable though, it's a Rega Planar and not bad at all even though its no Linn. I used to own a Linn, the table cost $1300, tone arm was $1600 and cartridge was $350 so I wont be buying another like that for some time. Even though the Rega was relatively cheap ($750) complete it still produces very nice sound for now. Beats the hell out of anything digital.

Funny you should mention that, my friend just gave me a copy of Stevie Ray live yesterday. I haven't watched it yet so I can't tell you where the performance is, I'll grab a few beers and watch it tonight. The G3 concerts are fantastic if you like guitar work. It's always Joe Satriani and Steve Via with a special guest guitarist. I have the one with Yngwie but I'm going to get the other two as well. You're right, the front row/perfect seat aspect of concerts on DVD is great, same for the sound. In some cases we have concerts where the sound is too perfect, an obvious studio job, thats not so great. Yes the sound is pristine but it also lacks a certain amount of "rawness" that one expects and enjoys in a live performance. I'm also looking for a good Talking Heads performance to add to our collection. I also have to pick up Neil Young, Prairie Wind.
-
Personally I love watching concerts, I'm also a HiFI/HT junkie so it fits well together. When I was younger my friends and I would go to a lot of concerts, saw some great performances. Now that I'm older I find that I prefer to just buy them on DVD/BD and enjoy them from the comfort of my own home. Thats where a good system enters the picture,in order to really enjoy them one has to spend a considerable amount of time setting up the sound, however once its done the sonic payoff is well worth the effort. Between two of my friends and myself we have just over a hundred of them, so lots to choose from. We tend to mostly buy them at the 400 flea market. Theres a woman who runs a booth there who specializes in vinyl and concerts, if she doesn't have it just name it and she'll order it in for you. Some I've enjoyed recently are: The Doobie Brothers - Live At Wolf Trap ZZ Top - Live In Texas Elton John - Live Greatest hits - One Night Only G3 - Special Guest Ingwye Malmsteen The Eagles - Live In Madrid George Thorogood - 30th Anniversary Tour Paul McCartney - Good Evening New York City ELO - Live At Wembly Styx - Live At The Paradise Those are just a few I've watched recently, the collection is obviously much more extensive. We're still hunting for older Supertramp, something pre Breakfast In America, a good Stones concert (theres so many to choose from). Last weekend I ordered The Who Live At Leeds Deluxe Edition, it should be in this weekend. One problem we've found is with older bands. Many of their performances were fantastic but the tech at the time wasn't. It can be difficult to find copies with great sound/picture because of this. Of course the three of us have invested considerable time and money into our systems so sound/picture is of paramount importance. Anyway, do any of you also enjoy watching concerts? Or am I alone in this respect?

11 Year Old Boy Tasered In BC
AngusThermopyle replied to AngusThermopyle's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
Not that I disagree with you Kimmy, rather the contrary. However if, as was stated by another poster, the kid was trying to surrender then the actions of the officer could be considered excessive even vindictive. The reason I mention this is because fairly recently I've seen a few shows (W5, The Fifth Estate) dealing with RCMP excesses out west. Could this incident be considered symptomatic of greater problems within this organization? For instance, one incident involved a suspect fleeing the police, he was shot dead. The officer claimed self defence, however the victim was shot in the back and found face down in the snow with no tracks indicating he did anything but run. The officer was cleared of all wrong doing, as I recall the comission consisted of high ranking RCMP officers. Anyway, I digress. Back to the topic, do you think the use of tazers is becoming too common? -
I dont know if this has been discussed yet but perhaps some of you may be interested in it. Apparently an elleven year old boy was tasered whilst in a group home after using a knife to attack a 36 year old man. Do you think the officer could have restrained him without the use of the taser, or was he justified and reasonable in using this tool. Is it possible that too many of the Police are coming to view the taser as their favourite "do everything tool" in situations that do not really require its use? Anyway, heres a link to the story. The great Jack Layton mustache question

Is this for real? Seriously? Are you guys so retarded that you actually think a moustache is significant. Just another reason to not frequent MLW anymore. Really, these forums are going downhill fast. -
