Watch out...    better not smoke any around me but I think the rules for cigarette smoking do apply

Halifax banned all smoking and vaping, except for designated places (which are few, and mostly private properties).  I think the fine is a thousand bucks.

  2. "When I arrived in Armenia, I immediately thought of a great man I loved so much, a great lover of the French language who died last week, the incomparable Charles Aznavour," Trudeau said. "In the days following his death, francophones and francophiles of the world united in mourning through his work. This momentum of solidarity was perhaps the greatest tribute that could have been made to him." https://www.ctvnews.ca/politics/michaelle-jean-makes-final-pitch-to-keep-top-post-as-francophonie-summit-opens-1.4129459 I'm francophone and I didn't mourn Aznavour's passing. And I even have one of his CDs.
  3. Are they Canadian ISIS terrorists or just world travelers?

The Canadian government designates them as "Returnees", or some BS like that.

As a Canadian citizen I find it reassuring to know that, if I should choose, I can now travel to other parts of the world, commit the most monstrous of crimes and return home without consequences. In fact, rather than consequences I can feel good knowing our Prime Minister will celebrate my presence in Canada as "an extraordinarily powerfull voice".

Never mind, they can read some poetry, maybe go to a 'healing lodge' and come out completely rehabbed - not..

  4. Michaelle Jean's days at the trough of the Francophonie will soon end. Not that she hasn't tried to win a second 4 year term of the plum job. So, no more million dollar apartment renos in Paris, no more $20K pianos.

Michaelle Jean refuses to go gently into the good night. She continues to fight for the top job at the Francophonie, in spite of losing Canada's and Quebec's support. The geopolitical situation is working against her, as France and African countries align with a Rwandan  candidate. Voting is to take place Friday at the Francophonie summit in Armenia.

No more of the finest fruits of the French colonial empire? Or is it that Trudeau wants to get that UN council seat, and needs to suck up to Macron?

Exactly OW. Sending peacekeepers to Mali won't hurt. The more a country commits resources to UN led missions the more brownie points they rack up in their bid for a UN Security council seat.

  5. A huge majority for the right leaning CAQ. With 9 seats, PQ lost party status and its leader lost his seat. Liberal leader Couillard is considering his future. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/quebec-election-result-1.4846201
  6. Liberals gone in Ontario, Liberals hanging by a thread in New Brunswick and Liberals facing defeat in tomorrow's Quebec election. Sweet dreams Justin.

Nice idea but in practical terms it just isn't going to happen. Point in fact, Libs kicked to the curb in Quebec, right leaning party in. People are already saying Quebec has gone blue, and so it goes.

  7. https://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/tori-stafford-s-family-to-protest-transfer-of-one-of-her-killers-to-indigenous-healing-lodge-1.4109053 With this news, the family's wounds are open wide again. Living through the heartbreak of losing a child to kidnappers, rapists and murderers. And how about Goodale's reaction? The convicted murderer was sent to an indigenous healing lodge "to rectify her bad practices in the past". So now, our public safety minister equates first degree murder to "bad practices" of the convicted murderer. Of course, for this Liberal government, this is just another way down the road to reconciliation with first nations. And of course, it's seen as a step to a more just society. I feel sick.

Too bad he isn't being nominated to the Supreme Court. Suddenly his accusers would all be liars.

  9. https://nationalpost.com/news/politics/john-ivison-a-sign-the-government-looking-for-an-off-ramp-for-the-governor-general Would switching Payette from the GG post to an ambassadorial position provide a diversion from Trudeau bungling the appointment of Payette as GG in the first place.
  10. The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Gender Equality Week:

"This week, we mark the first ever Gender Equality Week in Canada. This is a historic step, and a chance to celebrate gender equality as a key to Canada's success. We honour the people behind the progress we've made, and turn toward the work left to do make sure everyone has the opportunities they need to thrive.

I guess this makes Canada a more just society.

  11. Canada will create a new ambassador position dedicated to women, peace and security, Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland said Saturday. ..

Freeland did not offer many details but said the new ambassador would help champion feminist-based aid programs and advocate for more female participation in peacekeeping and conflict resolution.

"International and domestic civil society committed to feminism has been telling us that Canada needs to be even more ambitious, and one way to do that is to have a high-level champion for these issues,"

No applications will be accepted. Our feminist Prime Minister will appoint the W-O-M-A-N because he knows best.

  12. https://montrealgazette.com/news/quebec/quebec-election-another-poll-shows-caq-slipping-into-minority-territory Québec Solidaire promises $28 billion in goodies. How easy it is to promise a chicken in every pot and a BMW in every driveway when you know you won't form government. On the plus side for the party QS will probably elect more MNAs as a result. Poll raw data: http://poll.forumresearch.com/data/803621a9-c0d1-44d7-8f48-323502a404bcQC wave 2.pdf
  13. Here's the latest from Eric Grenier. https://newsinteractives.cbc.ca/qcvotes/poll-tracker/ Poll numbers are all over the place. This recent poll has the Liberals with a 7 point lead. https://montrealgazette.com/news/local-news/quebec-election-liberals-break-away-from-caq-with-7-point-lead-poll One sure thing, support for the CAQ is down and PLQ is up. I read the number of undecided is over 30%.
  14. Democratic Institutions Minister Karina Gould emphasized the need for an impartial and independent debate commission or commissioner in a letter to a House of Commons’ committee this week. “Formally establishing an independent commission to organize the debates could help ensure that the interests of Canadians, rather than private entities and political parties, are central to how leaders’ debates are organized and broadcast,” Gould wrote. She went on to outline some of the government’s views on how such an independent body would operate, including that it should be guided by various high-minded principles such as “democratic citizenship, civic education and inclusion.” The commission or commissioner should also ensure that “the decision they take reflects diversity in Canada,” she added, while working to ensure debates are as accessible as possible. Yet Gould was decidedly vague on whether the body should be set up inside Elections Canada as well as the politically sensitive question of how and when it should establish _ and publicly reveal _ the criteria for deciding leaders’ participation. The senior official, who did not have authorization to speak publicly, said the government has been working for some time and while some details are still being finalized, the intent is have the new entity ready for the October 2019 election. https://globalnews.ca/news/4466825/trudeau-liberals-leaders-debate-organizing-body/ How do you make political debates diverse and inclusive? Should be interesting to see how Liberals implement this ambitious plan.
  15. I used to be able to quote portions of media articles or excerpts from other members' posts. That quotation function has recently disappeared. How can I retrieve it?
  16. Trudeau switches from talking about "carbon tax" to "pollution tax". The more to appeal to the plebes.

  17. Stay granted on previous Bill 5 decision, paving way for 25-ward election https://www.thestar.com/news/toronto-election/2018/09/19/stay-granted-on-previous-bill-5-decision-paving-way-for-25-ward-election.html Without the NWC in the mix, what will be the protesters' rallying cry? "Dictator Ford puts Toronto politicians out of work." To which many Ontarians will say "GOOD, By the way, McDonald's is hiring."
  18. From a Montreal Gazette blog: François Legault’s CAQ started the campaign with a comfortable lead. The new poll, conducted between Friday and Monday, indicates that, with less than two weeks remaining in the campaign, the CAQ and the Liberals are in a dead-heat. The CAQ has dropped four percentage points in a week, with the Liberals gaining one point, and Québec solidaire gaining three points. The latest standings: CAQ – 31 per cent; Liberals – 30 per cent; Parti Québécois – 21 per cent; Québec solidaire – 14 per cent. https://montrealgazette.com/news/live-quebec-election-does-francois-legault-still-hate-anglophones The linked blog has a ton of info on the upcoming election.
  19. This election looks like it will be a nail biter. Legault (CAQ) got into trouble over the immigration file, resulting in a 5 point reduction in support and the Couillard Liberals are not far behind. The numbers were apparent in a Mainstreet Research poll released Monday, the first since the French debate. Mainstreet now has the CAQ at 31.8 per cent, down five full points since the first debate. The Liberals were at 29.2 per cent, essentially flatlining but still up 0.8 per cent, with the PQ up two points to 21.2 per cent, and QS up 2.5 points to 14.1 per cent. https://ipolitics.ca/2018/09/18/the-curious-case-of-quebecs-shifting-poll-numbers/
  20. Sophia Jones also doesn't like Ford's looks and repeats that sentiment in almost all his/her posts. Few politicians are as pretty as Justin Trudeau.
  21. Sure it is. All politicians do it to up their chances of being elected.
  22. After telling Canadians and veterans that veterans are asking for more than what the country can afford, it turns out that Trudeau and his government have left $372M earmarked for veterans unspent since taking office in November 2015. https://globalnews.ca/news/4447716/trudeau-liberals-leave-372m-meant-for-veterans-unspent/ It's despicable and shameful how the veterans are treated in this country.
  23. After vowing to not interfere with the matter of Ford invoking the NWC, Trudeau sticks his nose in it. https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/toronto-mps-letter-against-ford-bill-1.4822576 I figured all along he could not hold his tongue on this matter and relished the opportunity to criticize Ford.
  24. To be fair, legalizing the weed will keep Trudeau's supporters high enough to vote for him once again. Of course, this is in addition to screwing up our relationship with the US, wishing that enough Canadians dislike Trump to win even more votes..
