For sure some luck but Barker was one of the top aces of the war. One needs a certain amount of luck to win a VC and survive to wear it. Like Bishop and Beurling in WW2, Barker was an extraordinary shot.
The Snipe didn't see enough service to see how it really stacked up against the DVII but it would have least put the Brits back on equal terms.
