I heard Lincoln was shot on location. -
Did you Support Israel Attack on Palestine
Moonlight Graham replied to canvenconsulting's topic in The Rest of the World
Well, they can't be proportional because getting rid of the rockets (which is fair) means killing more than 3 people. Israelis shouldn't have to live under the fear of rocket attacks, even though they are mostly ineffective and rarely kill many people So ya what I said doesn't really make sense in this particular case so I guess you're right. -
Did you Support Israel Attack on Palestine
Moonlight Graham replied to canvenconsulting's topic in The Rest of the World
This is true. It is a tactic that they use to win, and is arguable effective. It is a very hard balance for Israel. They have to defend themselves & their citizens from the rocket attacks, but they shouldn't be hammering Gaza at a vastly disproportional rate and avoid civilian casualties...even though destroying the rocket and other facilities will lead to civilian deaths and it will take a lot of deaths to get rid of the rocket threats. Those rockets are very ineffective at hurting/killing people, so I'd argue they are more of a terror tactic than anything. I'm also not taking any sides of Palestine vs Israel because they both have their victim narratives and hate that prevents peace and leads them to murder each other. It's also hard to say "Gaza started this" because in Gaza's point of view their rockets are in response to grievances by Israel, and then Israel strikes Gaza, and then Gaza will strike Israel in the future and the cycle of idiocy continues... -

I think Israel is justified in an attack to defend itself against rocket threats, but they have to be very careful who/what they target and must try to be as proportional as possible. 3 Israelis killed by rockets, 50+ killed in Gaza by Israel so far. -
Israel-Palestine bi-national state ... Fresh hope?
Moonlight Graham replied to jacee's topic in The Rest of the World
Pretty much yes I agree. A bi-national state would be a major loss for Israel, they are making gains in territory continually. And why would Israel ever want a bi-national state when their goal has always been a sovereign national Jewish state in their homeland? -
Thanks for the spoiler, I was going to download and watch the fight today!

Israel-Palestine bi-national state ... Fresh hope?
Moonlight Graham replied to jacee's topic in The Rest of the World
There's no freaking way a bi-national 1-state solution will work. No way, 100% chance of failure. If Quebec and the rest of Canada can barely get along, have so much animosity for each other, and have been teetering back and forth on separation for so long, imagine how the Israel/Palestine region would function as a single state? Everyone knows what would happen: Israel would use its superior power to politically dominate the Palestinians within this "unified" state, and the Palestinian would rebel against it, causing riots, protests, and a breakup of this state. edited: for spelling -
Hot damn, apologies for my ignorance, yes you may be entirely right then. However, are there any limits to "freedom of the press"? Obviously a reporter can't come into your house uninvited and start taking pictures. Also, define "press", can anyone claim to be an "investigative reporter" and start snapping pictures just about anywhere. It's also a question of whose rights trump whose: at a concert/movie theatre you are on private property but the venue can tell you that no photography is allowed. So do the rules of the owner of the private property trump the right to "freedom of the press"? Honestly we need an expert in constitutional law and precedents to figure out this thread.

Muslims protest Rem. Day Ceremony T.O.
Moonlight Graham replied to Merlin's topic in Local Politics in Canada
Thanks for the link. I'm wondering, if someone clearly said/wrote "Canada will burn" (instead of it being anonymously scribbled via graffiti) and that person could be identified, would that legally be considered as some kind of treason, and could that person be charged or jailed or, in the case of an immigrant/refugee, deported? What are the treason laws in Canada? Does it regard speech? -
If I were a law student at that school I might try it. It might make the CBC!

Could have been a black guy who wrote that for all anyone knows. Black people say the "n" word all the time, they say in music all the time. There is no context for them to go this crazy over silly toilet scratchings. BTW having a "Black Law Students Association" is more racist than anything here. If I were Aboriginal or Chinese could I join? Didn't think so.

You can record the cops in public any time you want. They can't do anything about it. They can tell you, or "order you", to shut it off, but you don't have to. Also, if you ask for their name and badge # they are required by law to give it to you. You're also not required to tell them your name if they ask, or to show them ID, unless you're operating a vehicle.

Rights of BC security guards vs citizens: http://www.securitya...ardsPowers.html It didn't say he was requested to leave the property. The article said the security told him to stop taking photos and then they tried to take the camera, and when he refused they took him to the ground. If they didn't ask him to leave the property for breaking the photo "rule" (let's assume it exists) and use reasonable force to do so first, tackling him to the ground is assault. Security guards have no more rights than an ordinary citizen. So imagine a cashier trying to tackle you for your camera. He had every right to keep his camera. He would be better off charging the security with assault and attempted theft. Yes, but the article doesn't say he was requested to leave the mall. It says the security wanted the camera, he refused, and then was tackled and they tried to take the camera, he swore, then RCMP came and arrested him, apparently for swearing it seems and "disturbing the peace" that way. That's where the kid screwed up I guess.

Especially if they are law students looking to make a name for themselves in the field and wanting to get themselves on CBC news.

So... http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/story/2012/11/08/ottawa-racist-bathroom-graffiti-shock-university-ottawa-students.html N-word written on stall door, students go nuts, want "anti-discrimination training mandatory for all students" even though nobody has any evidence that a student wrote the slur. Then a keener must have gone to the CBC about it because it was covered on CBC.ca, on TV, and on CBC radio. Our tax dollars covering this groundbreaking story! N-words in public aren't fun, but really? Next story: woman upset her phone # was scribbled on men's bathroom wall promising to a "good time" if called.
