  1. There are several terror cells operating in Canada. It would be pretty naive to think their members didn't pass along their beliefs to their children. There were also Canadian Muslim families that cheered 9/11. What do you think the parents of those families were telling their children? Your positions seems to be that Omar should be treated like everyone else. He should be treated like an African child... He should be treated as any other Canadian would be treated. The reality is, in Canada, we don't treat every child the same, especially at Omar's age. He should've been in the 10th grade. Often, but not always, youths of that age are treated as adults. Every case is judged on it's individual merit as it should be. Omar's case is very unique. Other than being born on Canadian soil, he really has never really lived as a Canadian. Canada is a civilized society. Omar's from and uncivilized world. If you watch that 60 minutes piece with his younger brother describing the 72 virgins, it's pretty clear. As far as the "we should've done more to help Omar" position goes, why not ask "what has Omar done to help Canada?" Has he volunteered any information? Is there any indication he doesn't admire his father? Has he come out and said his teaching of Allah were wrong and abusive? Had he done so, his family wouldn't still support him. He would be cast aside like his brother, the black sheep. I still think the best solution is to negotiate a settlement with the Khadrs, such as we won't extradite the eldest brother to the US or prosecute the mother for treason if they'll agree to move to Pakistan or somewhere else in the Middle East. This is where they belong. The one brother, the black sheep, would be welcome to stay.
  2. He chose to be there in the first place, requesting to join his brothers.
  3. He was born into Al Qaeda, an organization to which his father was a founder. He wasn't illegally indocrinated. He did benefit from it though. Had children in Africa not been taken from their homes and made soldiers, the age of a child soldier probably wouldn't have been raised, and Omar would have been considered "of age" to be a soldier. At the end of the day, the only reason Omar is behind bars and his brother is paralyzed is because Chretien was duped by the family and got their father freed.
  4. Four or five years ago, a police officer was shot dead in the driveway of a house, before he even got out of his truck. I think it happened in Hill River, but I might be mistaken. Do we know the gun registry was checked? Yes, because it's checked automatically. If the police officer had known there was a gun in the house, I think it's logical to assume he would have approached the house with caution. But he didn't and he's dead. One of the officers who spoke out against the registry said he had to de-program recruits because putting trust in the registry can be deadly. No matter what the registry told the officer above, he is dead because he didn't use caution.
  5. They're still going to have something similar to the wheat board, but it will be voluntary, not mandatory to sell through it.
  6. Wasn't it you who stated that all Omar has ever been about is Xbox? Now you're calling someone naive? Omar Khadr was born and bred to die as a soldier for Allah. This isn't opinion, it's what the family has said. His training in weapons and explosives was real life; not Call of Duty. Omar idolized his father. He was his father's favourite. He wasn't forced onto the battlefield either. His parents kept him at home. He requested to go, wanting to be with his brothers.
  7. He already explained what he knew about Carson. He was aware of his conviction in the 80s for defrauding clients. Carson was disbarred for this and served time. Harper said, he wasn't aware of his conviction in the 90s and said he wouldn't have hired Carson if he had known.
  8. Actually, the bill says you can grow 499 plants for personal use without prison. Secondly, the comparison is meaningless because it's talking about maximum, not minimum sentences.
  9. [/size] your account has it's anecdotal place... as for whether or not your anecdotal account should be, as you state, "chalked up as weather", I will certainly defer to your reference's title => "November, 1922 Monthly Weather Review". So you're saying at least four years of warming is weather because it was under an article with "weather"in the title? Give me a break. Their analysis is only as good as their data. There was nothing sophisticated about gathering data at that time. By 1918, the captain said there had been great change throughout the seasons. According to the graph, this didn't happen. GISST is what was used prior to HadISST. Before satellites came into the picture, data collection was a bit primitive.
  10. According to that study, burning fossil fuels and cutting down trees has saved us from 4000 years of colder weather.
  11. So the melting of iceburgs, disappearance of landmarks, change in fauna can all be chalked up as weather? If you didn't click on the article, it's a detailed account from a sea captain who sailed the arctic for 54 years. If anything it indicates the GISST data from that era is far from accurate.
  12. Here's the article. Click on it to enlarge. http://wattsupwiththat.files.wordpress.com/2008/03/changing-artic_monthly_wx_review.png The hysteria and momentum of AGW is largely due to the word "unprecidented." That's not the case.
  13. In 1922, The Washington Post ran an article about the warming of the Arctic Ocean, melting iceburgs and the disapearance of seals. If that fact was at the beginning of An Inconvenient Truth, the average Joe wouldn't have seen any reason to panic. It wouldn't have sold many tickets or papers.
  14. Which policies did you find extreme? Fabrications from the media don't count. There were a few people they had to weed out like Randy White who was a lighting rod for bashing, but the NDP has this problem too with Ms. Vegas and some separatists. Far left voters wouldn't lead but many Liberal would vote Conservative, especially now that they no longer have to fear the boogeyman.
  15. Manning created the reform party because Canada was already polarized - East vs West.
  16. It'll be Mulcair. Layton's son will run for Jack's seat.
  17. The stat you hear trumpeted by some politicians is that 5 million Canadians don't have a doctor. That's a misnomer. What matters is access to a doctor. I would assume nearly all of this 5 million has access to a walk-in clinic. We do have a shortage of surgeons and specialists. That's what requires focus. There's plenty of money in the system for that. It just requires some innovation to be more cost-effective. An example of this is giving pharmacists the authority to prescribe/renew certain drugs. This is something Alberta is doing. This will save the system big dollars and free up the schedules of GPs to take more patients. It will also curb some of the abuse of the system. I had one doctor in particular who would make me come in for refills every 30 days. He was billing 3 times what my next dr. billed simply by making subscriptions 100 days. The last I heard, the pharmacist association was negotiating what it what a pharmacist would get for filling out a prescription. I would just give them the ability to do so and let the free market take care of the rest. If a pharmacist offers the service they'll get more business. If they choose not to, they'll likely end of losing customers. But that would be their choice.
  18. Of course you can say that. We're not moving any closer to a private only system. We may be moving closer to some European models, but why shouldn't we? With the boomers coming of age we need to evolve our system.
  19. Having an opinion on an issue isn't politicizing it.
  20. It's only a political issue by choice. The one thing Jack did accomplish was to help get rid of the minority government situation, that made dealing with political issues impossible.
  21. Politics is a game and Jack was playing like everyone else. He would tell you anything you want to hear. He would help politicize crucial issues like health care reform, defending from "the Americanization of Health Care." Of course, he knew our health care system is a mix of public and private care and that no one was suggesting getting rid of a universal payer system. "Americanization" just made a good sound bite. So did "George Bush's America" regarding Afghanistan. Jack wasn't really civil either. He equated Paul Martin to a murderer. But then he found Jesus, the American one... Obama. All of a sudden he was selling hope, change and a new way of doing politics. Why? Because it worked for Obama. It paid off for him in spades. IMO, calling Jack a political legend or the best prime minister we never had is way over the top. He ran a very good last campaign and won over the hearts of Quebecers who wanted change.
  22. Oh please! If there was one thing Jack never had to worry about it was keeping his promises. He could promise the NDP faithful whatever they wanted to hear, knowing he'd never form government and be accountable for his promises.
