Smart meters simply 'tax machines': Hudak
madmax replied to scribblet's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
Correct, you are arguing semantics. Its as painful as politics sometimes -
Anne Coulter is an entertainer. She provides schtick Alice Cooper, MacLean & MacLean, George Carlin, and the Sex Pistols all have mired themselves in controversy and show cancellations. Just because her topic is politics doesn't mean she is not funny, let alone nuts.

Ditto the right... As for Coulter. Her Promotional tour cancelled the event and no one else. It was a brilliant marketing move for a person whos 15 minutes was up.

Two Majorities and a slew of Poor decisions, incompetence and division to boot. Harris left in his 2nd mandate because he personally was never up to the task. Just doing something and following through even if its stupid, is still stupid. Ironically McGuinty is different type of Leader but policy wise not all that different from Harris. Just McGuinty has been a Fiber from day one, whereas Harris mentioned the stupid stuff he was going to do and did it. Those Electricity bills and these Smart Meters would have been brought in by the PCs if they were in power. The Electricity mess is part of the Harris Handshake Legacy. The Liberals never had a policy on Electricity, made statements up on the fly, but policywise have been a NeoCon or NeoLiberal since taking office. I use the term NeoLiberal as that is the traditional ground of the late 19th and 20century Liberals. Those policies were later enacted starting with Mulroney, Chretian/Martin, Harper Provincialy, it began with Harris, Eves, McGuinty in Ontario. The only real difference is the facevalue of each party and whom they want to spoon feed patronage and contracts too. Otherwise there isn't much to rave about these two parties. Nobody said democracy was a great thing, but its the best thing we have. Thus I refer back to a Minority is coming and I agree. Daltons time is up.

The PCs support the HST, but want to capitalize on public anger with it. They need the HST to offset their own desires for Corportate tax cuts. Their fiscal policy is similar to the Liberals considering the Liberals have not changed course from the Harris fiscal agenda. Infact they have continued with it. If the PCs were in power they would bring forth the HST just like Mulroney brought in the GST. The GST and harmonizing it with the Provinces have always been their long term goal. Liberals also support this and that fact is recounted in numerous posts in these forums. Hudak is trying to play 3 card monte with the HST. Ironically, he was too weak to text on his Blackberry to Jim Flaherty to tell the finance minister not to give the #4.6 Billion for transfer. The PCs are happy to see the Liberals take the heat for a policy they believe in.

And the poll suggests the Conservatives are going to lose 20 seats..

Yeah, U could look at the One NDP turkey who is a Liberal. Failed NewDemocrats become Liberals. Successful ones become Icons. Or you could follow the fiscal track record of all NDP governments and the facts are that the NDP governments were more fiscally responsible then the Conservative and Liberal Governments and that isn't including Tommy Douglases 5 Consecutive Terms with Balanced Budgets. Conservatives have a Long List of Fiscal Losers. Grant Devine Brian Mulroney Stephan Harper

I don't see any ridings where the CPC stand to gain traction. It will generate huge funds for which I think this is the ultimate goal. I have always considered the Gun Registry the issue that keeps on giving. If there is 5 seats for pickup their is 10 they are going to lose. Thats the problem with Wedge Issues. The Anti Registery lobby has been constant. The Pro Registery Lobby is just waking up. The two main parties are using the registery to exploit an Urban/Rural divide. Both parties have had the power to fix the registery (The LIberals are guilty of ignoring Rural Gun owners Legitimate Grievances for 12 years), in the case of the CPC and 2 terms, they have had ability to deny funding to it, or bring it forward as a Government instead as a private members bill. Even in the recent Conservative survey sent out ironically to Conservative supporters they indicate eliminating the Registery and making stricter licencing requirements..... Kinda like double speak to appeal to everyone. With the many real problems facing the country the Conservatives are going to use this to hide their dismal track record. My personal belief is that wedge politics is going to come up short again.

Who is/was more divisive: Harper or Trudeau?
madmax replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
WOW!!! Thanks for this one Wild Bill. Completely overlooked, and for me almost completely forgotten. I think u found a winner in truth. Trudeau was flamboyant and arrogant, and Harper is Ignorant and Rude. Both were/are able to polarize but Definitely different in their purposes for doing so. However Mulroney may have been the PM who most suceeded in being divisive while being the smoozhing hand shaking compromiser in the back rooms. When people actually had to make a choice, the choice was clear and the division existed and was identified within the referendum. The fact is TROC did reject meech lake. And the observation of Anglo Canada is bang on.... In a rush on this post... its a bit of a hack. In a nutshell. Wild Bill, its great to have your perspective and insight on this forum. -

Veterans ombudsman not going quietly;
madmax replied to msdogfood's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
This is a great omsbudman. He is speaking up for Veterans while the Conservatives pay lip service and undermine Veteran Needs. There is a reason the Cons want this guy out. There is a reason why Cons are hiding from this thread. However its nothing new, Peter Stoffer has called the government out on their treatment of Veterans for years. The Cons are all hat no horse but full of manure. Cons will be back, speaking boldly, once they get their YESman in place -

Woman Denied Gov't Job Because of Race
madmax replied to scribblet's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
A long time ago, before dinosaurs were born, I was an applicant for a Police Cadet Position. 2 Positions were advertised back in 1982. 350 People applied and its likely, most of them were local. I knew most of the people who applied in one way or another. Within this group were 2 women who I did not know. After 6 months of testing, physicals, more testing etc. the final 20 had those same two women. I recall overhearing the head of the police at the time saying he is going to make the next physical testing brutally hard so that those two birds don't fly. The number of pushups, toe touching etc increased and the weight lifting increased and became more repetitive. They still made it. Finally, clever as they were, a NEW FAT test was applied. Not to the guts of men going over their trousers, but to the rear thighs. Not that I was fat but there were still a few portly men in the final 18. The one woman was a bonerack. But Skinny women have more fat on their thighs then fat men have on their thighs. I laughed when I saw those caliphers come out and i knew I was in. I made it to the final five. They ended up taking 3. Two large (One heavily steroid using) young men, and a Chinese Guy who was 5'5" and normally unable to make the grade because of height. He was able to benchpress 370 pounds and was my Gym Partner. I was proud for him and he did get that job because of his ethnicity and we both knew it. He could also do the job just fine and I never held it against him. Infact because he was a minority the police of the day were able to make a case to take on three. About 5 months after that 2 women (DIFFERENT) were hired on directly as constables. I never saw the process or procedure, but we got our first women ever on the police force that year. At the end of the day, the entry skill required to be a Policeman, isn't that high. You must be physically fit and capable of learning. Some can go to college prep courses etc, but to do the job a High School diploma is whats needed and the ability to think. Before high school, grade 10 wasn't required. Infact a police record check or drug testing wasn't required. Requirements change over time. They will change again in the future. -

Woman Denied Gov't Job Because of Race
madmax replied to scribblet's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Yes, there was a time when Women and Minorities were kept out of the workforce when they were qualified. Then women fought for equality. That equality has forced women into law, police, firefighters etc. which have normally been the strongholds of white males. Today we see women in equal roles and it was because of employment equality laws not inspite of them. I watched as Law schools went to 50/50 enrollment at a time when that was hard to achieve. They started grabbing at 2nd year University students to fill the classes. Sure some men etc were denied into the University because of this practice. But prior to this others were denied. The world ain't fair. You can complain one way and then complain the other when it goes against you. As for that Female Law student taken from 2nd year... She went on to be a mover in Shaker in the United States.
